The Amazing Sony A1/A7/A9/APS-C & Anything else welcome Mega Thread!

Just in case anyone may be interested but hasn't spotted it, there's a Sony A7RIV in the for sale section at what looks to me to be a reasonable price. Grey prices for new ones may be tempting too though.

I think @Fuji Dave reset the benchmark for reasonable price on a A7rIV :D

And how much will counselling or a foot through your monitor cost you afterwards?

In real life they are actually both very friendly and knowledgable. I met them at a event about 12-18 months ago maybe and have had a couple of zoom calls and some exchanges of messages with them on social media since.

YouTube is their full time job so they have to have a certain personna that appeals to their market which for them is newbie photographers. As is the case with all of them. All of these online “influencers” are the same, They have an online personna but can be very different in real life. In more real life (obviously I only met them once) they are super friendly and I liked them both.

On the flip side of the coin at the same event I met an “instagram influencer” who was really rude and came across as a really horrible person but their online personna is the complete opposite and everyone talks about how nice they are online. Their rudeness wasn’t directed at me but at other people at the event and members of their own team.

I feel quite bad for that guy somebody really should have pulled him to the side and explained he was being robbed.

He could have easily sent that equipment into MPB / WEX etc and got a lot more money with little to no hassle but I guess most people are just out for themselves.

I don't think anyone here would seriously have an issue with them personally as anyone with half a brain will realise that many on line influencers and even more serious reviewers may have an on line persona to some degree and may even sometimes drift into personal preference and even, whisper it... clickbait. I think we all know and can accept this.

Competition news... and sort of interesting, if not really :D

Very nice if you're willing to spend than much on a camera and then spend quite a bit on a lens too.

I did enjoy using RF's and I see the appeal in using a mostly manual camera but manual fun can be had with an A7x and a manual lens for a lot less even if lacking a bit of the charm of a RF.

Very nice.

135mm is a bit long for me, I have some film era ones though the best being a Rokkor f2.8.

The Competition. The battle of the big fat honkers...

As I said a while back, I took Mrs WW to a function in town and there were a couple pf photographers there using big inbuilt grip Canons and not having seen them for a long time and getting used to mirrorless I thought they looked ridiculous and possibly hard work to wield about. I can see a need for the performance high speed cameras in some situations but if pushed towards a high performance camera I'd much rather it was smaller and lighter. I assume the photographers in that case didn't have anything smaller to use at that event.

I am still using my old A900 as my main camera (lots of nice lenses, no cash to upgrade, and for a lot of what I photograph the advantages of the newer bodies are minimal when it's just a hobby), and have the VG for it.
My 'travel' camera is the A6000 (so much smaller).

Personally I'm happy to use all 3 options (A6000, A900, A900 + VG), and which one I use depends on circumstances - and if I were spending 90% of the time shooting where the VG was helpful, then a 'big body' with built in VG might be appealing - it's certainly a case that there is no one 'always the best' camera.

I still use my gripped Pentax K-1 and Canon 7D MKII quite a bit (used the Canon yesterday actually) and have no problem with the size of them but then I am using big lenses 99% of the time anyway (200-600mm, 150-600mm, 150-450mm) so the size of the body really doesn't make much difference

Regarding the A9III ... disappointed they are saying it will still use the 24mp sensor, was hoping for something around 35mp or larger.

were did you see this , i was hoping for for more as well ,

There are others on YouTube who say it will be a 50mp sensor - we'll just have to wait and see.

Just sell all your bodies and get the A1 :D

In the case of those photographers I mentioned I think the big gripped cameras only made sense if they didn't have anything else. All they were taking pictures of was an extended family and friends bash, people entering the venue, shots of groups seated at tables and the like and posed photos with Disney characters.

Have thought about it, if I sold all the Pentax and Canon gear I could afford a killer Sony kit.

Trouble is I enjoy standing there for 20 minutes trying to decide what to take out then realising I shouldn't have picked the Pentax when trying to photograph anything moving faster than 10mph

A Red Kite in flight taken yesterday.
The eye autofocus on my new Sony a7iv seems to be quite effective, I'm very pleased so far.
Taken with the FE200-600mm.
This image is 1/2000th @ f6.3, ISO 500, 600mm.

This is real nice, I've always wanted to do some bird photography. Maybe something to rekindle the photography hobby.

From reading comments about gripped cameras over the years a lot of the preference for the design is being able to comfortably use the camera in portrait mode and with the added bonus all day power. To me an optional grip is the best of both worlds but again I've seen people cite the inbuilt grips as being much better.

For my use I agree entirely with you and did use a D700 with a grip briefly for the extra speed but just found it too unwieldy and I've been surprised how much heftier the D750 feels now compared to the A9 even though they're not that different. The inbuilt grip on Z9 is an immediate deal breaker for me.

I am very tempted by the A1 for the better dynamic range as I keep swapping between Nikon and Sony at the moment, I could sell off the A9, A7SII and Ronin-SC to fund most of the A1. However I think I need to be patient and wait for more stacked sensor cameras and an A9III with 24 or so MP and 4K but with the better DR of the A1 would be ideal.

Years back I had a Canon SLR with a detachable grip and it stayed in place because I could use AA batteries in it and that was good as I didn't have the original camera battery. It is easier to shoot in portrait mode but of course that old 35mm camera was a fraction of the weight of the more modern DSLR equivalent.

If you need a grip all the time, a camera with a built in grip is definitely a much better option. It is much more comfortable in terms of ergonomics and generally the battery capacity is larger and its just easier.

Camera's with built in grips are designed for people that need more power and who are using longer lenses. Using a non pro camera with long lenses is a real pita. So sports photographers etc. will always prefer a proper pro body.

This is likely.

It's a lovely sunny day here but very windy. Would love to go for a walk with a camera but I'm tied to the house today. Good news is that I might be able to get out a bit more in a week or so.

As we've been a bit quiet here maybe people could post some pictures taken today?

Sorry to read that Mike. We'd love a dog but unfortunately our commitments would make it a bit difficult. Maybe one day.

Thats the reason I keep ignoring the emails. As much as I would love another dog they are a massive responsibility, our son has severe learning difficulties and very limited speech but he could literally do anything to that dog (large Husky/German shepard cross) and he would just put up with it, I'm not sure another one would.

My last few internet uploads have been film images as got my scans back the other day.

Cute puppy, we had to have our dog put to sleep early last year and I can honestly say I have had an email every day since from my wife containing a picture or a link to a different dog at the Spanish dog rescue centre from where we got the last one.
Sorry to hear that.
We lost our dog Ben last April.
We weren't planning another dog for a while but someone we know's dog had puppies and you know the rest.....
