The Amazing Sony A1/A7/A9/APS-C & Anything else welcome Mega Thread!

I sold my A73 and bought an A7RIVa before Christmas. Haven't had the chance to give it a proper try out yet and the weather this week isn't helping!

The weather this MONTH isn't helping ... been out with the camera once and it was so grey I took a few pictures and then binned them.

Yeah, ever since I got my 200-600 it's been dull and grey. Usually get some great dry bright days in Jan so fingers crossed.

I'm not keen on putting covers on lenses but the first thing I did with my 200-600mm was buy a Arca-Swiss foot for it.

Still not sure why if I'm honest, I have done it for my Sigma 150-600mm Sport and Canon 100-400mm MKII as well but I never use a tripod

This is the first time I have got a cover. I chose to for a couple of reasons.

1: White lens, I hate lenses being white, stands out like a sore thumb and attracts attention from non-photographers.
2: I shoot handheld and often lean the lens on dry stone wall or a rock etc and the protection should protect the lens from this.
3: I use a strap across the body so the lens hangs vertically down my left side. Very comfy but I am not the most careful of people so this should help with light bumps etc.

I guess time will tell if I find it annoying in the field but this cover is rubber backed so won't slip around and move now that it's in place.

I too was toying with the idea of a better foot for the lens, but mainly as I am used to carrying it using the foot (not for the tripod functionality) but since using a strap to carry I have found I grab the foot less.

Pictures needed :D

I got a silver chain through the post today and rather bizarrely and worryingly there was a face mask too. The chain was in its own plastic bag within the main plastic bag containing the face mask so I had to open the bag containing the mask to get the bag containing the chain out. WTF?

I do think that these things are next to useless from a C19 prevention POV but I do believe they can transmit other peoples diseases so even though it looks new I don't know its history and I was not best pleased.

This may be some weird free gift or company policy but if so it is IMO madness. There was no note explaining why.

Will do soon, I just hope my great watch arrives soon.

A few from today taken in the 90 minutes between the rain stopping and sunset.
They're all of a, local to me, former coal washing plant which is slowly being reclaimed by nature with a little help from a Friends group. These pictures are part of a ongoing project I've been doing for the last 6 months.

All taken with an A7R4a and Voigtlander 21mm Color Skopar.

Went for a short walk around Clifton today. Parked to the west so we had to walk over the Suspension Bridge but the missus isn't too keen on looking down.....! Bit blowy, few spots of rain, just a touch of sunshine in between. Managed a couple of shots of the dog, the other half & the dog stood in front of a brightly painted wall! And, managed to fire off a few film shots including one that's a possible for the FPOTY 2022 challenge - still, not got January's image though :ROFLMAO:

The end of an era?

It's not an era I ever felt any love for. The bulk and weight of DSLR's always bothered me and I was glad to leave them behind, The big step change for me came with the Panasonic G1 which I shot side by side with my 5D. The G1 had its issues but in other ways it gave the 5D a real fight and convinced me that mirrorless was the way forward, for me. Good luck to those who love DSLR's but I never did as from day 1 they were bigger and heavier than anything I loaded 35mm film into.

Last month.....

Going out for a walk tomorrow but not expecting much photowise. Might take the Jetboil thing though & actually stop for a lunch break etc

What's wrong with a biscuit and a bottle of water? :D

The weather and light have been so poor here I haven't bothered taking a camera out but I did snap this the other day, in the dark and rain and lit by the security light on the garage :D The last rose of this winter. A7 and Voigtlander 35mm f1.4.

This reminds me how awful artificial light can be.

PS.
That wasn't the only picture I took that day but they were all taken when I got home, I didn't bother while I was out.

There's rolls to use up & bacon in the fridge :)

Sorry Sony but we are going to part our ways. Your camcorder HDR AX53 is a great camcorder there is no doubt, but having owned you for a short time I realise what I am missing and you don't have all the features I want. Even more expensive versions still don't so we are going to part. Hope you find a nice person to look after you as I have done on that well known internet auction site.

Been away from here for a good wee while as ive not really picked up the camera since the start of the year.
Read/skimmed over the 100 odd pages I’ve missed since I was last here.
Been more focused on my other interests and even moved my work prospects(not that I worked before this) to that area. I went back to college this year after 20years away from education which has been interesting
Moved to horticulture, though what they teach is very old school and not what I would have hoped they would be teaching.

didn’t get anything camera related for xmas either, but should be getting a nice big polly tunnel soon and have been considering getting a macro.. so if anyone has recommendations let me know as I only know of the Sony 90mm
have been following a lot of the a7iv stuff in some fb groups.
Seems to be a lot of issues with the longer lenses (200-400) ect not focussing properly even though it’s showing as focused in the evf.. have been 4/5 reports of this in the past few days as more have got them. I think it was while using eye focus.

Aim to get back out with the camera a lot next year and edit some of the million photos I’m sitting on that I haven’t touched.

Very nice close up style capture Alan, liking this shot very much.

I'm glad you like it George. I just thought I'd like a record shot as I hadn't taken one just in case it didn't survive the night as I like to see how long the roses last each year. It is very noisy though due to the awful light from the security light. I think I need to take another record shot in daylight before it dies.

It's disappointing that the tech doesn't seem to be moving forward but I suppose this may be as good as it gets until something else comes along and at least it's not worse :D

Double post, I managed to quote myself and post again. I dunno how that happened :D

Carry on...

Sensor performance hasn't really improved much since A7Rii
Any small improvements is from new processors. The main improvements have been in the AF, scan speeds and EVF.
I think Sony especially are missing a trick by not adding more computational features into the cameras.

Hi all, I became the proud owner of a Sony A7Rii a couple of months ago and took it out for the first time properly yesterday. I've mainly been shooting 35mm film for the past decade+ apart from a brief period when I owned an original Canon 5D (2006 model). A steep learning curve getting used to all the settings. Looking forward to using this modern camera more, and might have some questions along the way.

Here are a couple of pics from yesterdays outing in North West Wales, I've a long way to go learning more about post processing etc.

I think we’re pretty much at the limit of what current sensors are capable of, but I also wonder if we really need more?

I think photography’s going to move more onto the computational side of things with tricks like the ability to change focus and dof in post. I wouldn’t be surprised if we can alter the bokeh in post too in the future. You’ll basically be able to stick a 24-300mm lens on and get pretty much whatever shot and look you want.

For me the number one improvement I always like to see is better high ISO performance. Would be nice to completely ditch a flash.

Global sensors will definitely be the next big thing. I think we're waiting for processors to catch up, we do it in our cameras at work but it requires a fair amount of processing power.

Flash is more than for just providing extra light though. You can use it control the lighting to light your subject in a specific or desired way.

Even if high ISO is insanely good I don't see people (especially portrait and macro shooters) giving up the flash.

Probably why I said, "For me" right at the start of my post so as not to imply everyone wants to ditch the flash.

They just said on the radio that London has had 12 minutes of sunshine in the last 17days. Not just me then.

Light has been non existent for weeks, depressing.

10 minutes of it was yesterday.
It's been absolutely crap for last 2 months. Haven't seen a clear sky in two months at least. Feeling dreadful already because of my illness and the weather is making it worse.

It's dull, flat and dead here again.

On sensors I suppose I am a bit greedy. I'd like more dynamic range to cope with the sun low in the sky and retain shadow detail and I'd like better high ISO performance and better performance under artificial lighting which IMO can be a real killer but my creaking old A7 may be behind the best here.

Get well soon nandbytes. C19 or something else?
