The Amazing Sony A1/A7/A9/APS-C & Anything else welcome Mega Thread!

Thanks, that's what I thought. Is there a way to figure out total shots taken with just silent shutter?
Not that I’m aware of.

Not that I’m aware of.

That's a pity. I just wanted to try and figure out how many photos I've taken in total since owning the camera. I've kept all my raw files since 31st March 21 and they add up to just over 6,500. I got the camera in October 2020 and wouldn't have taken many between then and March, so I reckon my total usage is probably in the 8 to 9000 range.

If you use Mac I believe you can see the total number of shots taken, I could with my Nikon anyway.

At the rumor site...

A broadcasting camera? That's nice.

A new lens? Hmmm. What could it be?

How about a class leading 28mm? Possibly zero chance. But they do have very good and at or near the top of the pile 24, 35 and 50mm lenses so why not? I have the 28mm f2 which is good enough for me but maybe not an exceptional lens.

Fingers crossed it's the 24-70GM MK2.

@Merlin5 I've just checked and unfortunately it doesn't show total count on Mac with Sonys for some reason :(

I guess because it's irrelevant, no wear caused by using the electronic shutter.

Perhaps though the electronics that activate the electronic shutter could eventually fail after a certain amount of use?

I wouldn't worry too much as electronics can work for many decades when they're just sat there working, with no moving parts flexing them.

It's constantly reading the sensor anyway to feed to the live view, it effectively just saves it when you press the button.

I thought about that but I don't think that's the case tbh as it has both types of shutter, as did my Z7 which did register the total number. I don't think Sony are great at adding all data tbh, thumbnails don't appear on all OS's either

An "electronic shutter" isn't an actual mechanism, it just turns the sensor on and off (as with the A7) or just records over that period (A9 and up, hence no blackout).

But there's nothing to wear out.

Yeah I get that, but as I said you have the option to use either or as you can with most mirrorless. However, I don't think that the data shown on the Nikon files was for a 'wear and tear' purposes, just general info regarding how many shots you'd taken which is what Merlin was after (y)

I work on a simple equation to work out total shots taken....

Count the files in the keeper folder and multiply by 2000. 3 X 2000 = 6000 So I've taken roughly 6000 shots in the past 3 years :)

@Matt. Seen your lens choices.

Gut would say Tamron 28-200 or 24-105. The long end of a lens can be very useful for landscape photography - and I know the sort of places you like and quite often 70mm won't be long enough in certain scenarios.

The other option might have been a Z6ii and Z 24-200. I've read comments that the lens is very satisfactory and 24-200 gives you a huge field of view variety in one lens.

The more I write this - now you've gone for the A7iv - the 28-200 Tamron seems an excellent call out.
Yeah I’ve never really been too keen on Nikon. No real logical reason, but I’m perhaps too stuck in my ways now!

My biggest concern with Tamron is build quality. My camera is a tool and used as such. It won’t be perfectly cared for. I’ll probably have more of a play when I get the body.

I have a good local camera shop that I can walk to that stocks all these lenses so it’s easy to go and have a go!

I'd honestly consider it. I think a super zoom 1 body 1 lens solution is ultimately what you're looking for ie trading off some IQ for portability. I'll trade off chunks of portability for IQ, others do the converse

I'm just not sure 70mm is going to be long enough for you.

The rumored R1 is rumored to outperform the Sony A1.

That's nice but as the rumor site says the A1 is more compact than these integrated grip cameras. As I said a while back, I saw two photographers using integrated grip Canons at an event and to me they looked ridiculous. If in the market for a camera in this class I'd chose the A1 every time for the saving in bulk and weight and add a grip if I wanted to shoot a lot of portrait orientation shots.

To each their own :D

It’s worth noting that I used a 17-40 F4 for years as my primary lens. Then switched to a 24-105 F4. I have never used a lens longer for my normal use. I’ve owned a few 100-400 lenses when required for specific trips though.

Tamron’s build quality is very good these days, I’d have no concerns over knocks and such.

I’d expect the R1 to be better, it’s not rumoured to be out until next Autumn. Sony will no doubt then bring out something better, followed by Nikon and so on (y)

Yup and such s life. It's the form factor that I myself have an issue with as I just can't see myself ever hauling around and using a gripped camera that size. Each to their own though and I'm sure that for reasons I can't understand some will just love these big gripped behemoths.

I suppose one difference between me and those gripped Canon camera guys I saw at the function is that they'd be using the cameras on and off for a couple of hours with regular rests whereas I'd be carrying the camera for miles and using it on and off for hours..

I can see why people use them. If you're always swapping between landscape and portrait orientation then it makes sense, but they're not for me. I'd rather just have a grip for the rare times I'd need it.

Updated samyang 50mm f1.4

I actually liked the rendering of the first version but the AF was terrible.

Like the Sony 50 1.8, is suspect there was copy variation - I really liked the rendering, and found the AF less poor than the Sony. Wish I'd kept mine.

I got this lens (the first version)soon after it was released. Loud af and the lens was no sharper at f8 than it was wide open. The wide open out of focus rendering though I rate as right up there. Better than the zeiss. This update could be interesting.

A Sony 40mm f2.5 review at Amateur Photographer...

This includes some rather dull and uninspiring pictures of Whitby. I must have taken a million dull and unaspiring pictures in norther England in our often dull and uninspiring light.

Yeah I had it for a little while too.
Not the sharpest tool in the box but lovely rendering.

I think everyone had one of these at one time or another.

A.F was ridiculously bad so am sure they will have improved that and as you say it never really got sharp.

Too late for me now as I have the 50GM and it is the best lens I have ever used never mind the best 50.

I’ve just received the gm too so looking forward to trying it out.

Is anyone else having problems with the camera/lens size comparison website?

I can't delete selected cameras or move them now. I see that the guy is appealing for donations so maybe there are problems. Is it working for anyone?

Works for me (y)

Works for me (y)

It's not working for me.

I have a saved link and that's not working and starting from scratch from Google doesn't work either. I can call up cameras and add lenses but I can't move or delete them. How odd.

Very odd. Might be something to do with cache or cookies?
