I think a lot of lens prices are a bit crazy these days. I’m very interested in the 70-200mm but like you it will have to come down in price and be exceptional for me to swap the Tamron for it. It’s a lot of dollar just for a tripod collar, focus limiter and an extra 20mm.
 
I've said a few times that I'd like more compact lenses which are good enough like some of the lenses from my DSLR days or even further back rather than the often larger and often very good lenses we see today (even if being very good includes in camera corrections) but sadly the lenses that are compact and just good enough today often have iffy build and inconsistent quality and / or iffy focus or possibly all of these. Being "better" could increase the cost plus we do need to try and remember what lenses of the past cost back then when we adjust for inflation and wages etc. I may be wrong but I think lenses today are often just about worth it all things considered with only some being still a wee bit expensive even after we factor in them being "better" and inflation and wages.

The Tamron doesn't really need a collar imo as it is so small and light. Not wildly different from a 24-70 and I have never bothered about them not having collars. I appreciate the focal length makes a difference too but I think it was a reasonable move by Tamron not including one
 
It has a built in level, dunno about bracketing though as it's something I don't do.

Googling tells me it does.

As long as you know what you're getting. I have one and like it but it doesn't have an up to date spec and may not be suitable for everyone especially if you want fast responses and the latest and greatest focusing bells and whistles. The A7 gives a more leisurely experience :D Are you ok with that?

And also OSS and different focus modes.

think it will come in a couple 100s less than canon as most sony lenses have done in recent times.

True, although I doubt I'd use a TC with it. I never use the focus mode switch/buttons on lenses :exit:

Well.. I have an Alpha 7 and the 200-600. The focussing speed is, to say the least, leisurely. Am I right in thinking that the Apha 7 III would be a mite quicker?

Noticeably quicker. Might be worth waiting as the A7 IV is iminent and you might find some good prices for the Mark III.

I've got two A7iii's anyway. This is for a very specific purpose, 360 images. So it'll be constantly on a tripod, lens constantly attached so I can just shoot. AF not required. Too much faff with using one of my A7iii bodies.

You should look at a 2nd hand Sony a7Riv - I have 2 of these and they work very well and fast enough when paired with a Sony 200-600mm

How do you (or even can you) get the level to constantly appear, I only get it when I press the shutter, I changed something ages ago and I have never been able to work out how to get it back?

I was wondering that as well. Unless it just means that's the best camera to pair with it. Really hope it's not some feature that only works with the A1.

You can choose what cycles round when you press the display button. It's a shame you can't customise it though.

Interesting it's the lightest 70-200mm/2.8 but certainly not the smallest.
I wonder how it compares to 100-400mm when used with 2x TC. The previous version wasn't that good.....

I'm surprised by the size but I guess it's to keep it internal zoom?

I had to laugh at that review, it just shows how picky we've become as you'd be forgiven in thinking that the first version is a shocker of a lens ;)

yeah and also possibly to keep it compatible with TCs?

it seems all the wrong people get copies to review! Who takes Tony Northrup's review seriously!?
I wish someone like Dustin Abott would be given review copies instead.
 
I think it's fair to say it's going to be a great lens. The original was highly regarded when it was released and this is better in every way apparently. I'll wait until there's enough samples out there to get an idea of rendering before I make my verdict but I don't think sharpness, AF etc etc are going to be an issue. I'm still not convinced it will sway me from the Tamron though, I like that it's much lighter but it's a bit of a shame it's as big as the Mark I.
 
I wish you could have the histogram and level in the same display. Can you have the two with later cameras?

My Panasonics do the two together, no problem.

I’ve said this for ages, seems an easy thing to do to but I don’t know anyone other than Panny and Olly that do this.
