The Amazing Sony A1/A7/A9/APS-C & Anything else welcome Mega Thread!

Anything I want I guess. Problem is that the a7r2 is such a great camera, a73 isnt that much of an upgrade, pretty much the same sensor and the A74r is probably overkill I don't want to drop down to 24mp so I guess I'm at the wait and see stage
A7R3 is a fair upgrade over the A7R2 if you are care about stuff other than the sensor, you get an upgrade in:
- AF
- Ergonomics with better controls and buttons (joystick AF-on etc)
- dual card slots
- better EVF
- bigger battery that lasts forever
and few other very minor improvement on IBIS, noise and dynamic range.

If you a landscape/portrait photographer for example and only care about sensor performance then it isn't much of an upgrade.

I guess it depends on what you shoot and how bothered you are about ergonomics etc.

If the R2 does everything you need then there’s no point and it might be better to look at lenses.

Or just buy the A1 and you’re unlikely to ever need to upgrade again ;)

I know DR can be affected using the electronic shutter bs mechanical shutter but looking here it appears to be negligible on the A9, does anyone know if the results sow a similar trend with the A9-II?

yep A9II is the same but A9 and A9II shoot in compressed RAW in electronic shutter as far as I know i.e. you only get a 12-bit output (I think its the same for pretty all other cameras I know of using electronic shutter apart from A1, not sure about R3)

I'm sure I shoot uncompressed RAW in electronic shutter on my A9
Ok I looked it up... I will just quote dpreview:
"This is particularly interesting because all Single drive modes, including fully electronic, support full 14-bit Raw. The Continuous drive modes, however, switch the image pipeline into a 12-bit*"

Basically depends on your drive settings....

There is really not much point in shooting uncompressed RAW.

Still 14 bit in continuous with the A9-II (y)

Switches to 12 bit during bulb and long exposure NR, and continuous compressed but 14 bit continuous uncompressed. I tend to shoot compressed when shooting continuous so will only be getting 12 bit.

Had a look to see if the Red Throated Diver was still down at Musselburgh. It was and very close but the light wasn't happening. Had mutley and the daughter with me so used the 400mm for that and got 5 mins of stunning light. I'll do some work on the one with my daughter as I haven't quite got it how I want and I hate editing

Daughter and Dog shot is wonderful.

Thanks Trevor. It will make the wall that one but I'll need to get the processing right. She has a very Scottish complexion so the sun really lights it up. Highlights are not blown though so should be able to get a nice print and love that she chose to wear the same clothes as the dog lol

The wall. Just the place for it.

Your dog wears clothes - that's amazing :)

Love these images- very well taken

Les :)

The daughter & dog shot is great. :D I'd probably clone out the adidas logo because it draws the eye too much and doesn't match the doggie outfit. ;)

Out this morning to catch up with the deer again. Not much going on, still very early in the rut.

I forgot to add some positive exposure compensation due to the mist. It’s meant the photos were a little under exposed. I seem to have struggled lifting the shadow areas without introducing too much noise. Anyone else found this with the A9. Is the sensor a little less forgiving when lifting shadows. It may just be that I’m a little out of practice.

Looks like you've got pretty close to them. During the rut in full swing I'd keep at least at 400mm distance :D
A9 sensor dynamic range is not as good as other sensors in the Sony range, its on-par with likes of 1DXii/iii which is what it was competing against.

I did Bushy Park for the first time last year, got there around 6am to avoid the rush and it was still dark. TBH i f I go again this year I don't think I would take the A9 as I was hitting ISO 9000 on the K-1 and that was wide open at 450mm f/5.6 1/125. The A9 is excellent at a lot of things but I'm not sure it would be as good especially when lifting the shadows.

Don't need high ISO unless you pick a particularly terrible time!

Couple from Richmond park last year

These were cropped from landscape format so I wasn’t as close as you’d think. At this point they aren’t crazy yet. They are still hanging around in male groups. This one was pretty chilled but starting to show signs of getting ready to rut.

I’ve been going to this place for nearly 10 years so Im aware of the signs to look out for and when to back well away (not that I get that close). The good thing about this place is you have to stick to the few public footpaths. This is good and bad in regards to photography, but at least they never get encircled by people and can’t be chased around the park so they have plenty of room to wander off away from you if they wish.

Ive only once felt in danger and they was when I met a fallow doe and fawn in an enclosed path on the way out of the park. As there were deer proof gates either end of the path and 6 foot fences either side they shouldnt get in there. It bolted straight pass me, thankfully I was able to get out of the way behind a tree.

Yeah I will take as much reach as I can get during the rut.
Think I will make some trips 3rd-4th week of October, but there is a half term in there too which means lots of people.... hopefully early morning will be peaceful.

It is still very early but I like going to watch it all develop rather than just turn up for the peak. Its not all about the photography for me, I’m just happy seeing the behaviour especially when we wouldn’t normally get a chance to see it in the wild.

I take my son roughly once a month or so for him to see them and run around in a large area.
But I don't particularly do any photography during that time. The peak season is kinda "me time" :D

Like the movie Fierce Creatures, animals that aren't really :D

That is some nice dog walking scenery! We went somewhere new yesterday, very nice place but we didn't have time to explore properly. Few nice little beach areas too too spend the day!
Yeah we've very lucky living in the Peak District, it's not hard to find nice walks. I just need to get my backside into gear to get back out and take some proper landscape pics, I've got lazy over the years

Back out to shoot my favourite subjects with my current favourite lens

Two very nice motorcycle shots Trevor, absolutely love the Goldie.

"I've actually still got a 500cc Goldie that belonged to my Pa, he bought it new many, many moons ago and occasionally I still give it spin. I love the way the exhaust twitters/whistles on overrun because of the valves overlapping" :) :)
