The Amazing Sony A1/A7/A9/APS-C & Anything else welcome Mega Thread!

Oh I forgot that the A9's dynamic range starts to shine at higher ISO's compared to others. Most my shots are higher ISO. Maybe I should just stay put.

I plugged in the A9 along with the A7Riv and the GFX50R and you can see how much better the other two are at lower ISOs but when hitting ISO640, which I find is incredibly easy to do especially with Auto ISO, the A9 doesn't look too shabby.

I'd probably only use a fixed ISO100 when doing landscapes and I suppose in most cases where there's no movement I can compensate by exposure bracketing and with tight control increase my dynamic range using subtle HDR?

I went back to Canary Wharf on Friday and this time I remembered to take the quick release plate for the tripod! I went to North Greenwich first which is one tube stop further along from Canary Wharf, walked a few minutes to a bridge overlooking a dual carriageway, and set up on that for the second photo. I don't particularly like climbing steps to high bridges over motorways, I get nervous, lol. On my way back to North Greenwich station I set up the tripod again and got a shot of part of the 02 Arena. Unfortunately I got lens flare around that large spotlight. And the first shot is at Blackwall Basin at Canary Wharf. All 13 and 15 second exposures, two with the Sigma 56mm and one with the Sigma 16mm.

These sites are useful as a comparison, however whether or not we should take the scores literally is debatable as different sites have different results. I know some don't rate DXO but they seem to be the go to for most people, which is more accurate is up for debate, but Nandbyte;s will tell you why he doesn't rate DXO (y)

I don't really rate DXO and your graph is proving my point for me :D
the DXO graph you showed is inconsistent.
A7RIV has a dual gain sensor too which DXO doesn't show. According to them A9II miraculously got dual gain while A9 with the same sensor and processor didn't.
As you can see from your own graph DXO are wrong so better to ignore them.

It's a good reliable consistent resource :)
PDR is not the only measure though, it's not the whole story... There's read noise etc.
You can get very deep into it which a very big time sink.
A9 sensor isn't actually all that great (it's not bad either), it's a trade off for the fast readout.
A1 has mostly got over it but there is still a small trade off. I'm keen to see how canon have done in thier R3.

Yep, totally get that. I find it interesting that ISO 50 gives a very similar DR to base ISO.

ISO 50 is just an extended range (same as dragging the slider down in post). its not really native or base. Base is still ISO100 on Sonys.

Very nice set of landscape/architectural shots Lee, particularly liking #2 followed by #3.

"Small bit of crit' if you don't mind, I think you should have cropped/cloned out that bit of chain in the bottom left of #1"
 
I spotted the chain too but I thought it added something :D

You could even see it as social commentary. Or maybe that's reading too much into it :D

I'd leave it in... but I'd probably have another version with it cloned out.

Hey George, thanks very much, appreciate that. (y) Yes agreed about the chain. I'll do that now.

edit: Thinking about it, I'll lose a fair bit of the reflection if I crop that. I'll have a go at spot removal instead.

I downloaded the first and fourth GFX 100 RAW from here and popped them into LR to see how much you have to play with and it's pretty incredible how much highlight and shadows you can recover - and clean as well. I then brought up an A9 raw from summer and moved some sliders... :confused:

That was how I felt moving from D610 to A7III - shadow recovery was amazing.

That's surprising, shadow recover on the Nikons is excellent so the Sony must be superb.
 
A short while ago someone mentioned an app for viewing and sorting raw files, can anyone remember what it was please?

Dunno, but will look at that. Unfortunately finder's broke since I updated my mac to catalina so I can't see thumbnails anymore so want something to view and sort raws before loading into LR.
 
What do they do? Are they similar to the cataloguing of Lightroom?
