The Amazing Sony A1/A7/A9/APS-C & Anything else welcome Mega Thread!

I'm sure there's a thread dedicated to this question but I'd rather ask on here. I'm toying with the idea of getting another 1" Sensor type camera for dog walks when I can't be arsed to carry my kit around, but I had the Sony RX100-3 and Canon G7x in the past and wasn't overly impressed with the lens quality, have they improved this on the later gen RX100's?

Toby, I have an RX100M6 and the lens quality is "Excellent" at any focal length particularly around the F4-F5.6 apertures. The M7 model is just as good as it's the same lens etc but the later unit has better tracking and also supports an external microphone plus a few other revised bits.

There are 3 different lenses on the Rx100 cameras. Here is how they are split between them.

just to add there is a new RX100VA too (not included in that comparison) which has some of the processor and firmware improvements from RX100VI but in RX100 V body+lens

Anyone uses or used a Sony FF with Russian Helios lenses?
If so what adaptor do you need?
Thankyou.

Thanks guys I appreciate the feedback, I'll look at that review when I get home. Ideally I'd like a faster lens rather than the reach, but the better lens would win overall (y)

Sony have the best lenses of the bunch in terms of sharpness.
If you weren't impressed by RX100III you either had a "bad copy" or you won't be happy with other lenses from a such a camera type since RX100III-V is supposedly the best one of the lot sharpness wise.

Maybe a bad copy then. Is the lens no different from gen III to V? I don't need all the bells and whistles such as tracking so if the mark V lens is no better I'd rather save money and try another mark III.

exactly the same lens no difference whatsoever.

If I had to change my MK1 I'd pick a 5.

The better EVF would be nice over the 3. The Canon G5x II looks good too, although looks larger.

Another one of my Nikon lenses gone and only a couple left. I have been very patient and for the most part got what I paid for the lenses and not far off what i paid for the D850s. They really have been a cheap brand to own over the years as I got some real bargains buying used and shopping around.

The good news is I think I have made the decision to go for an A1. Looking at the price on Panamoz it is around a hundred quid higher than a few weeks ago. Not sure if that is the "strength" of the pound, semi conductor shortages or lack of stock but I'm interested what other think of the future price both in the next month or so and perhaps the next year.

I rarely buy anything new but don't have an option with the A1 but the last thing I want to do is get the camera and a few weeks later is is hundreds cheaper.

View it another way, what's a hundred quid on a 5k camera for a few weeks use especially when you have paid all that for the 400mm already.
You could be waiting months.

I personally shop around a fair bit on lenses to find a good deal and make sure I do not lose a huge lot of money if any.
In case of bodies (especially new and/or cutting edge ones), I see them more like cars. As soon as you have bought one you have lost 20%. I see them as inevitable losses or the "price" of this hobby.

I ordered an adapter from China to use my Pentax lenses a few months ago but tbh I wouldn't risk anything on it.
Have ordered a better quality one which should be here in a couple of days. What's the saying, buy cheap buy twice?

I'm not sure.

I've had problems with adapters recently including cheap ones, mid range K&F and higher end Novoflex which cost about £90. Overall I'd say they're a lottery and even Novoflex can let the odd duffer through. I have Novoflex adapters for Minolta Rokkor, Olympus Zuiko and Canon FD lenses but after recent events I doubt I'll be buying another as a duffer costing knocking on for £100 stings a bit more than a duffer from China costing £15. Having said that I've never had an issue with refunds or replacements, the suppliers have always been good in that respect.

Thanks, you have made me feel so much better about my new purchase

I love the right side of this image where the foliage can be seen beyond the water . perhaps an image on its own.

Thanks. Just wish I could have spent longer there. Bit of a balancing act taking the camera gear on family holidays

The adapter that solved my problems was a K&F "Pro" which worked with my screw mount lenses and had an insert which I could rotate after loosening some screws to get the top of the lenses to be to the top when mounted, if you can follow that, and I have a K&F for my Nikon lenses. I've also had two K&F duffers but to be fair one was just the wrong adapter in the box.

Have a picture :D

That was in my mind too, it is only a hundred quid but the A1 will clean me out and I fancy a CT card and the grip, maybe even another couple of batteries. I have great equipment already so a bit of patience isn't an issue. It certainly meant I got at least a grand more for my Nikon kit than selling it all to MPB or similar.

It's just IMO the luck of the draw. K&F wise for screw mount I've had one wrong item, one that wouldn't go to infinity and one which was ok apart from the lens not being tdc. That Nikon one "works" but the mount markings are off so really that's 100% failure rate for K&F if I want to be strict on the QC. Personally I now wouldn't choose K&F over a cheaper Chinese adapter as my experience is that it's a lottery no matter what you buy or who from.

Which little prime would you go for? Or, maybe the old 35mm f2.8?

I do think these new ones look nicer and they have that aperture ring and a button for those with cameras that'll use it. Mine wont.

Ive no idea if I’m honest at the moment. I haven’t kept up with recent releases.

The A7C can also be used for 360 work too.

Apparently the A7c won't work with an external USB intervelometer. And the internal one only goes up to 30 seconds?
if you mean multi-port, it doesn't have one.
you can tether it via. USB-C and control it that way or I believe there are apps that can do it.
but there isn't an easy method like there is on larger bodies with a proper multi port.
this is why A7C can never really be my main body, just has too many useful things missing.
(Sony generally has many useful things missing but that's another discussion all together ;) )

I was just coming around to the idea of it too  :ROFLMAO:

No good though what with the night sky stuff.

From the rumor site. Some here have an A7c but for those who don't this might be interesting...

The compact lenses...

When I think I'd quite like the 40 or 50mm I remind myself I already have the 35mm f2.8.
I know it’s not FF but I like the look of the Nikon Z fc as a smaller lighter option, could be good if they start bringing out more small primes. The 16-50mm VR is a very compact zoom to go with it too.

certainly a nice bit of eye candy.
Old APS-C sensor and no APS-C lenses.
honestly would rather prefer EOS M6ii :P

As said here already, adapterd tend towards te adequate, rather than excellent, and I've not found much difference in machined quality between the cheapest and mid-range stuff, albeit that the quality is quite variable at all price points. I would tend to find the cheapest these days, because chances are it's just as well made as an adapter at 2-3 times the price.

Since we're talking about kit, I noticed that E-Infinity have the A7rIIIa for £1599. Kind of tempting to see how good the new screen etc is, especially since I'll need to send my A7III away for the shutter button to be fixed.

Don't know if it's of interest seeing as some people here have had an a1 for a while, but I found this latest Mark Galer review an interesting watch. He's quite scathing of other reviewers giving misinformation. Towards the end he makes a case for who would need the a1 and compares with the other flagship cameras, the a7rIV, a9II and the a7sIII
