The Amazing Sony A1/A7/A9/APS-C & Anything else welcome Mega Thread!

I have a genuine question here, I guess I could also ask Raymond as you both are pro's rather than hobbyists so have different expectations from your tools.
Im guessing that this has been your job for a while so how did you manage 10 yrs ago, as there must have been a noticeable improvement in AF since then? So if you think the A7RIV is bad now, you really must have had alot of frustration back then with the kit you had available to use? Did people just ignore AF and shoot manual for certain shots?

Or is it that as AF has improved, it has opened up new ways to shoot so the benchmark has gone up as you use a camera differently now because of the better technology? Shots you get now, you just wouldn't have bothered trying back then..

Or have expectations gone up with every new generation of camera? Are there long standing issues that manufacturers just never fix?

I know before my A7R2 I would upgrade just for the higher MP count, that seemed important for me, when actually 2 of my favourite pictures that I have taken were on a Canon G2 (4MP) and a Canon S90 (around 10MP), so my logic when I bought my Sony was flawed. I probably didn't even need a DSLR , a decent point and shoot would have probably done. However by then I had been sucked into the joys of photography forums and bitten by GAS :)
It was very hard at the time to resist the reviews for the a7R2, I suspect if I had the money now, Id have fallen for the A1 as I know it would have solved problems that I didn't even know I had until GAS kindly told me..

Even now I have an itch for a new camera early next year, don't need one, but it suddenly seems like the ideal way to celebrate my next big birthday.

Been shooting full time for plus years style has evolved as technology has allowed. Improvement in a.f has changed the way we do things definitely.

Sigma 150-600 coming to e-mount says rumours

I'm kinda hoping for an affordable teleprime like the 400mm or 500mm f4

at lower shutter speeds I don't think you are get a realtime view because the shutter is closed for longer than the sensor readout speed.
Just as you'd have a longer blackout with slower shutter speeds.
In the Sony A1 features bumf it says that they've employed some new tech to give a more real time view with slow shutter speeds, not sure how though.

so it looks/feels better but if the shutter is very slow then its still noticeable.
how can you have real time view if you are shooting at 1s? (let alone more than 1fps!)
Its not really possible.....

I was talking more about slow shutter pans. They don’t say to what shutter speed they’ve improved it, it just said for slow shutter panning (y)

yes I know I was over exaggerating a bit. ;)
tbh I haven't tried it apart from on cars on the road through my window.
It seemed fine to about 1/80s-ish
to really know I'll have to test it properly

I only tested A9 in an event at Goodwood for like 15 minutes more than 2 years ago. So I wouldn't really know if its better or not tbh.

Just after sunrise time Monday morning.

A7 35GM

Pretty thick band of cloud on the horizon but the really low patchy cloud was almost within reach! Was moving pretty quick too so took more shots than I needed to.

I always want a photo like that, keep looking at fields for a single tree when i am driving but never seen one good enough!

I am slightly envious.

Thanks Lee, I don't usually produce a colour version of a mono image because editing for mono has different requirements from a finished colour pic. It looks a bit dull here.

I’m not used to seeing it in the sunlight, and I pass it regularly. :D

Thanks, enjoy. I've never been to Cadwell but want to go at some point (y)

All my dissing of the A7RIV and I have just booked a job that means I need to now go buy another one.

Not even gonna have time to do a Panamoz etc. will have to hit up a local shop.

How you finding it compared to Olympus?
Pros and Cons. There’s no getting away from the fact the Sony 100-400mm is more difficult to handle than the Panny 100-400mm due to the size and weight meaning that handheld slow shutters pans are tricky. There’s not doubt the IQ of the Sony 100-400mm is better but due to the relative lack of reach you have to crop more meaning the IQ advantage is negated somewhat.

In terms of handling the Tamron 70-180mm and Olly 40-150mm f2.8 are about on par, but you lose 120mm effective reach with the Tamron so I’d say advantage Olly with that.

The A9ii body definitely wins though. The EM1-II is superb, but the A9ii is truly epic. Shooting 1/125 shutter and higher with realtime blackout free shooting almost feels as though you’re cheating ;) Less that 1/125 you don’t get real time view with the A9ii but it’s not quite as bad as the ‘slideshow’ views you get with other cameras and I actually still found it easier than dealing with the blackout of the mechanical shutter. I kind of forgot how fast it shot and ended up with A LOT of photos on Sunday
So I've just gone back over my photos from the Moto GP and WSBK some years ago and the IQ from the Sony 100-400mm is definitely better than that of the Panny 100-400mm. There's not 'that much' difference in sharpness, but the rendering is much nicer from the GM imo. I'd completely forgotten that I must have rented the Olly 300mm f4 when I went to Silverstone, that's a nice lens and I'm on the fence between this and the 100-400mm GM.

the issue with the panasonic/olympus 100-400mm is the long end is f6.3 and you are basically into diffraction territory on m43.

That's a good point, never thought of that

Littleted's just sent me a YT video from Mark Galer regarding using aperture priority for panning shots and whilst what he was saying makes sense for certain situations it's not a technique I'll be using. However, it did mention something that I wasn't aware of and that is continuous AF doesn't work beyond a certain aperture. Up until recently Sony's only continuously AF'd at f8 and wider, but the A7RIV will C-AF up to f11, the A9 and A9ii will both C-AF up to f16, and the A1 up to f22.

I got away with it at the weekend as when I was panning at 1/15 aperture was f22 (I forgot my ND filters ). I guess DOF was pretty big though.

Golly.

Yesterdays ZV-E-10 launch was cancelled because of the war...

My son is borrowing a 7iii this week and maybe this is just me but... i don't get the shutter sound. We were out with some friends on Sunday and he was shooting car to car rolling shots and I said " wow, how slow are you shooting ? 1/10s or somthing ?" as it was clack...........clack

It was actually 1/60s

Is that normal ? Is the shutter sound "fake" ?

Could it be that EFCS is on?

maybe. I haven't looked as I don't get my hands on it

He seems to be enjoying it - a7iii + sony 55 f1.8 + Tamron 28-75 + sony 70-200 f4 for a week for £ 167 seems like a bargain to me

On the downside, it might cost me loads shortly...

A7III shutter sound is a bit clacky to be honest, if it is really bad could be the shutter is failing.

I disagree Toni, I don't think it looks dull, I think the colour version looks very nice too. By the way, is it the same bridge as in this video?

I can answer for him - yes, it’s the Ribblehead Viaduct. This time of year it has at least 4 steamers passing over it each week. It’s on the Settle to Carlisle line. Easy to get a viewpoint unless there’s a train due - then there’s a queue for the tripod holes.

Just having buyer's remorse after ordering a 24-105mm f4 for £553.97. All sold now, unfortunately. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/SONY-FE-...-/133778153597?_trksid=p2349624.m46890.l49286
I actually managed to get 1 from eBay after you - they seemed to release one more around 7:30am the morning after and I managed to get it.

Anyway, I sent in my cashback claim, on 4th July and they have confirmed its valid today. Won't actually get it paid for up to another 28 days, but if you haven't already claimed the cashback I'd suggest you do as I expect they will accept it as they accepted mine (the invoice from eBay only says Currys PCWorld, and only hint of it coming from eBay is the reference number, hence why I expect its been accepted)

To my ears shutter sounds are more pronounced at slower shutter speeds. Of course he may have enabled the fake sound during electronic shutter.
