The Amazing Sony A1/A7/A9/APS-C & Anything else welcome Mega Thread!

First time ever I got two lenses arriving on the same time.

- first is Samyang 18mm f2.8 bought new from the UK as I was a worry to have to return it like the previous one. A very quick test and it seem to be good. Focus near, far and beyond far both in manual and infinity. No obvious decentring. I need to have a better look but it looks like a keeper! I love the idea of this lens, the small size compare to the old samyang wide angles, the autofocus, makes it a lens to keep in the bag all the time.

- second is a Sony 200-600 bought new from LCE with part exchange for my GX9 and lenses. Seems really good. The light was poor but the auto-focus was fast and accurate. I tried a few shot at 600mm and 1/100 or 1/200s and got mostly keepers. I think I am going to like it a lot.

Bonus got a sony 32gb though (write/read 300mb) and a sony UHS-ii USB card reader, makes downloading speed 10x faster that the built-in reader in my laptop.

I'm having no luck finding an A1 in the UK, not even an ETA on one so looks like Panamoz will get my order soon.

Anyone actually using it for video? I was out filming some wildlife with the A7R IV last night and it was one of those time I would have like 8K.

MPB have a like new used one in stock if you prefer UK

Basically had the same issue. I must have called at least 10 shops. Not a single one can give an ETA which is even more ridiculous.
I have fed it back to my personal contact in LCE (branch owner) and also local Sony rep.
They keep telling to buy UK stock and not grey import, support the shops etc etc etc but they can't even get the cameras to us in some predictable fashion compared to having it shipped from other end of the world. It's annoying as hell!!

Would not buy the one in MPB based on my "research". It's serial number is 377XXXX. Could be affected by the IBIS issue.
Pretty sure all models from panamoz will be new stock with 477XXXX serial number because I have confirmed it with them.

That is as nandbytes mentioned below a 377XXXX and they could not tell me if it was a UK model or Grey. Wex had an "open box" one yesterday but I was too slow and missed it :(

Yup, I'd 100% buy local or from UK if I could but without even an estimate on delivery it's pretty hard to.

Superb shot (y)

Would that be looking at the picture on their web site and taking the serial number from the base? :D

Lol no that's not the research I'm talking about.
I was referring to my point about 377XXXX serial numbers being affected by IBIS.
If anyone cares I can expand the "research" and how we/I got this conclusion.

LOL I didn't think of that, they told me on chat.

It does say UK/CA next to it though if that is anything to go by. Either way not wanting to risk on used atm,

Normally I don't mind waiting but when I'm spending the kind of money A1 costs I want it for my trips. I have already been with it on two trips and I have 2-3 more planned if not more.
What is the point of getting a £6.5K body in the post in September after all my trips are done!

I am still waiting for a 3rd party option. The Sony ones are crazy expensive.
But UHS-II cards are pretty fast too in A1, thanks to the new processors it writes faster to cards than previous bodies. So far I haven't run into much buffer filling issues. But I normally shoot at 10fps going up to 20fps if I am particularly going after fast action or fast/erratic birds.
30fps is really overkill for me

I’m just going to order a 80gb Sony one, I’d rather not pat that cost but I want to try it. I have plenty of the fast Sony tough SD cards I can use for normal use.

Just realised I still need to buy reader, any third party ones of those?

I suggest just using the tough cards and see if you actually run into any issues.

But yes there are 3rd party readers. You'll find them on eBay for £40-50-ish.

You don't need a reader per say, your camera can act as a reader if need be.

I used to use a card reader but now just plug the camera into my computer and whilst I'm processing the pictures the battery is charging. Also I worried about the impact of repeatedly removing and reinserting the card but I suppose the same could be said for repeatedly plugging in and unplugging a USB cable.

I appreciate that a card reader may be faster.

Same as I've always done.

An interesting theory and one I could relate to. The release spring mechanism of the SD card slot in my first p&s camera stopped working. So it would click in to lock and would always pop out. but luckily if I forced the SD card slot door shut it keep the SD card in place and it still worked.

Would really be disappointed if that happened to one of my sony cameras :(
though it hasn't so far (touchwood)

The fear of removing things from slots dates back to my days in computers when some backplanes had ridiculously low insertion/removal ratings (I'm looking at you Dec PDP range.) I don't know what the ratings are for slots in cameras, they may well be rated into the many thousands for all I know, but that fear has stayed with me.

got my second 14GM, has one spec of dust in the corner just behind the rear element!
at least its not in the middle unlike the 1st copy and its just one small spec instead of a few specs of dust.

But the fact that its obviously visible on a brand new lens is annoying me! :(
return or keep?

Return

think I will just return it for a refund for now.
This lens and I are just not meant to be I think :(

Now I will have no 20G or 14GM or 24GM :crying:

Maybe give it a few months and try again, you might hit a good new batch.

Stop it, I've not been bothered about the A1 but you're starting to get me tempted

I wouldn't accept dust in any new lens, let alone one as expensive as that.

I have accepted dust in some lenses in past as it'll eventually have some anyway :P

But on these lenses they were right behind the rear element and on an UWA lens don't think that's good.

What is the situation with L-Plates for the A1, I'm guessing it is slightly different to the A7RIV/A9ii ones as RRS have them listed as coming soon?

Are there any others available?

I have a Kirk one listed in sales.
It's an A7RIV / A9II one but does mostly work for A1 too.
I have details in sales thread.

Kirk have also made one for A1 specifically but it'll probably be a while before can order one in UK (Wex)

I was trying to check my new 200-600 for lens inside and found it really hard. You cannot open the aperture by hand? So when you look through the aperture is closed very very small?

Thanks, I have a couple of RRS ones and a Universal 3 Legged thing L-Plate that I purchased when there were no others available for the A7R IV. I'll use one of those while I wait for a proper RRS one.

Just having buyer's remorse after ordering a 24-105mm f4 for £553.97. All sold now, unfortunately. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/SONY-FE-...-/133778153597?_trksid=p2349624.m46890.l49286

Cracking price! I've been eyeing up the 24-105 for a while but ever since I saw it in Currys for £699.97 at Heathrow Airport and my credit card failed, I've been stubborn to not pay over that - the recent cashback offer has made it tempting, but I'm yet to bite. At £553.97 I'd have done 100% though.
