The Amazing Sony A1/A7/A9/APS-C & Anything else welcome Mega Thread!

Just in case anyone missed it... The rumor guy reported yesterday that the latest version of Nik filters is out, 4. He reports initial discounts but I don't know if that applies to the UK.

I'm still on the free ones.

It’s still possible to use hand held but does make more sense using a tripod as it means its easier to keep the camera/lens horizontal/pointing downwards to keep the rain off the front element. I think they photograph it on the tripod as it’s just easier to see it on the camera.

There’s a big clear panel on the back of the cover to look through. One hand can go inside and the draw string can be closed around the wrist, the other hand holds the lens from the outside or from the inside if its large enough (depends on model). Admit it’s harder to turn the zoom on a 100-400 as its an extending design but it’s not impossible. I’ve only expect photographed wildlife in the rain. I’ve been caught out whilst doing landscapes and used it but I’d not go out specifically to photograph landscapes in the rain.

This YouTube video at 3:00 shows how it can be handheld.

That looks awesome! Just shown the Mrs and she said "you may as well get a hide!"

Hmmm....

:)

I'm still unsure what to do about my Sony 24-105mm as my 35mm never comes off the camera. It's pretty much brand new and I've kept it just for the OSS if doing video, but I'm finding myself not really doing much video at the moment and it's not really a focal length I use. I still think I would prefer a Sony 200-600mm.

Love that first picture and the snarl Ant. It reminded me of Diane Arbus boy with a hand grenade plus another I forget who by, street kid with a gun. Oh found it... William Klein :D

I got an email with this offer but I don’t use the free version I have so won’t be buying ;)

Why not give he free version a go?

I don't use it a lot mainly because you can't (or I can't find a way to) batch process and the whole process is slooooowwwww. But I do use it now and again, often even. There's so much in there something may be useful for you?

I do have it, used it a couple of times and not used it since (y)

Has anyone gone from an A9ii to an A1? and if so are you pleased with the change?

Not from A9ii but from A7RIV. A9 series isn't for me.
I am incredibly pleased and its an incredible body. The first "do-it-all" camera I have come across.

How many niggles with it? Are they all manageable?

They've fixed more niggles than creating new ones.... things that could/should be improved
- There is a different option for bird eyeAF and animal eyeAF while canon seems to do just as well if not better with just one "animal eyeAF" option. I think sony should spend some time unifying eyeAF and making it all class leading like they have done with human eyeAF and realtime tracking.
- LCD and touch screen still sucks! doesn't bother me a huge lot since I do not actually use it but it is what it is.
- They should spend sometime adding some features that m43 for example have been doing for a while like AF bracketing, focus stacking, long exposure liveview etc etc. Plus add features their own bodies have had in past like inbody focus limiter etc. All these could probably be worked as a firmware update so I wish they'd do that.
- Canon on their first iteration (of IBIS) have really upped the IBIS game in FF area. their IBIS is really effective and rated at 8 stops in comparison Sony's IBIS even on A1 is abysmal for a brand that's had it since 2005.

As a side note I like that they have matched dual card slots but I wish some 3rd parties would make cheaper CFexpress type a cards.

@Jase

I went from A9 to A1

Better EVF
No AA filter
Colours more pleasing when using Adobe Color Profile (no magenta cast, and perhaps less of the 'yellow')
No input lag, always 100% responsive.

The grip and antiflicker were on the A9II i believe, but not the A9.

Very pleased with the upgrade, I mean alternative camera for those with different needs.

That's interesting, as because I have an injured knee I'm looking for one camera for a while instead of A7R IV and A9ii

Anything negative vs the A7RIV? is the reduced MP noticablel, how's the dynamic range etc?

Now the problem is when will they be available again :( I'll email Wex to see if they have an ETA.

I did and very happy mostly for its speed and MPs for birding better AF too disappointed with the EVF blackout problem but there is a simple fix tape with a 5mm hole in it .

Dynamic range is basically the same give or take with slightly better high ISO performance. But we are really clutching at straws either way. Same goes for megapixels while its slightly more noticeable than say dynamic range differences.
I would definitely swap A9II+A7RIV for A1.

Negatives with A7RIV:
- tracking isn't as good as A1 (no surprise there)
- slower buffer clearing (new processor on A1 clears the buffer into the same cards much faster even when I am shooting larger lossless compressed RAWs)
- you cannot change setting on A7RIV when buffer is clearing which is really annoying
- electronic shutter is basically useless with lots of banding issues.
- while i find 30FPS overkill, I do like shooting at 15-ish FPS for action/wildlife.

The issue with the A9 series was the lack of dynamic range at base ISO. The megapixels is a slight downside too but not as much as the dynamic range for me.

The EVF on A1 is just gorgeous. I dare say better than any other viewfinder inc. DSLRs. Once you look through the 0.9x magnification EVF there is no going back. Plus with the blackout free shooting tracking action is just amazing!

The only negative is the 10MP less compared to A7RIV which isn't big deal tbh.

I'll always need 2 cameras, but for now and for a good few months I guess I'm nursing a bad knee so a one camera solution is ideal.

Any of you using a 200-600 with it? and again if so how is it, any issues. I never had an issue using it with the A7RIV but I know some people reported issues.

Basically the in bright sunlight the EVF blacks out because the eye detect sensor that automatically switches to the EVF is exposed to too much light. Most sony bodies have this issue its just that on A9 or A7RIV its shielded/hooded by the eye cup so you don't notice the issue. On A1 and also my A7C its exposed so both bodies have this issue.
There are workaround for it and Sony has fixed this issue via. a firmware update on one of the older A7 bodies. So I don't see it as a massive issue or deal breaker.

For second body I have the A7C which also gives me small light option which A7RIV+A9II wouldn't give.

I too never had issues with 200-600mm on A7RIV. I recently posted picture of puffins with A1+200-600mm on this forum:

I nearly filled a 128GB card which is around 2000 pictures. I think like 10-15 were out of focus and some of them were because birds came too close to the lens when they were flying towards me. so this combo is amazing for all intents and purposes.

mmm Panamoz actually have the A1 in stock and a £1200 saving. Tempted but not sure how comfortable I am with warranty situation etc,

that's a good price and they seem to have good customer service. if you can sleep at night knowing you have grey imported go for it.
Plus if you have insurance you'd covered by that too.
Also pay with paypal credit if you can, then you can covered by paypal for 6 months and then section 75 for 3 years.
so all in all you can cover your backside or rather your camera's backside quite well :)

24/85 setup is working well for weddings, although maybe a higher resolution body for the 24 would make sense...
That's what I used for a long time. It's pretty good especially in a high Res body since you can get to 35mm f2 also with cropping.
Now I'm back to 35/85 setup.
I could work with either tbh.

Yup, also tempted by the 35GM, loving the 24GM though. If I only I could get one for how much I paid for my 24GM.

I've spotted a used one in mint condition, just not sure if it's a UK model or not, I have a serial number, is there a way to check?

But good point I have camera insurance and they've never asked where I purchased it from.

I had a look at your Puffin photos, very nice. Where did you take those? I'm in Pembrokeshire and Skomer is on my doorstep, but typical I get an injured knee at the ideal time to visit the island.

you cannot tell if its a UK model or not from the serial number. Not sure even if Sony can tell tbh.

It was at Skomer indeed :)
I am really jealous about people who live in Wales or Scotland. such nice places to live in compared to London :(
Too bad for me work is mostly in cities like this.

Nuts as it is the only way to tell the difference on camera bodies is by the pre installed language options that’s is what Sony use as well to differentiate grey stock they aren’t able to tell by serial number. On lenses Sony have no way of telling other than by the receipt of purchase.

U.K camera bodies have all of the European languages installed German, Spanish, French etc. Grey bodies have English plus Chinese etc.

A lot of money to fork out just for a better EVF ;) :p

I've found the DR of the A9-II better than expected (y)

Can you not just fit a different eyecup? I have the larger one fitted on my A9-II anyway to stop me squashing my nose so much.
My A9II doesn’t nor does my mates A1. Only European language is English.
I'll have to check mine at some point (y)

My A1 does and so does my A7C. All languages are available.

Are they grey?

My A9II is grey as is a couple of my A7III’s and one of my A9’s none of the grey bodies I have have any European languages apart from English.

My mates A1 is from e-Infin and also the only European language listed is English. I only know because he is German and would have preferred to use German and he was giving off about it.

European bodies have all the European languages.

Yours is U.K stock though is not?

So should have all the European languages.
