The Amazing Sony A1/A7/A9/APS-C & Anything else welcome Mega Thread!

Sad news... David Thorpe has died.

For those who didn't know... he was a long time press photographer and had a very good blog and reviewed kit, often MFT.

Problem and solution

I am getting more and more into doing videos. One problem I came across was panning from side to side and zoom at the same time. So the answer was to go remote wireless . Next issue was the "hotshoe" on the camcorder was already being used by the Sony microphone which used the hotshoe contacts but left the micro contact on the camcorder body clear for other gear.
Just plugging in the remote receiver left it just hanging, not a good idea so I dug out a sliding bracket to mount it on. solution found as shown below

P1040039a.jpg

so from the top down

Sony ECM-XYST1M microphone
Sony FDR-AX53 Camcorder
Kenko 55mm UV filter
Sony lens cap ( it doesn't come with one)
JJC SR-F2W wireless receiver (transmitter in hand held)
Nikon SK-7 variable support bar
Mamon Pan and tilt tripod head
Prima photo tripod head ( in this case)

having that bar I could fit an LED light if I wanted to instead, as that bar cound be swung more forward

Just a quick tip. To stop that flip over hotshoe cover from flopping down I used a bit of blue tack rubber type compound. Doesn't leave a mark either

That looks to be a complex set up Brazza. Well done for figuring it all out.

I've branched out into wildlife shots...

Takumar 35mm f3.5.

Sure it's been done to death... but Uncompressed vs Compressed in a7R IV.

Is it worth sticking with Uncompressed? I don't mind doing it for astro and landscape. But anything else just feels like a waste. Bigger files to move and process. Smaller buffer. Buffer takes longer to clear.

for most things upcompressed is a waste. Astro and high dynamic range landscape are only two places I bothered putting up with the uncompresses RAW.
for 95% of the shots compresses is perfectly fine.

I think 300/2.8 just to be safe.

One day I might buy a long lens. I have 45-150 and 100-400mm for MFT. I used the 45-150mm today.

Talking of lenses. My Takumar collection, complete now.

28mm f3.5, 35mm f3.5 and 50mm f1.4. These lenses are teeny tiny but of course you need an adapter. They are lovely though, like teeny tiny Voigtlanders :D

Someone we know is selling their Sony 55mm f1.8 in the classifieds. To me it looks to be a reasonable price.

An incredible day for me really, charged up the battery for the A7 III with the intention of taking it out and taking some shots after so long, might be boring for some folk but I love them and can't wait to get back out tomorrow. A7 III + FE 35mm f1.8.

Plus on my last few years of hell, last week I took the love of my life out for a meal, and then got down on one knee and she said YES so you could say we are all happy here.

That's great news and congrats (y)

so are we all going to get an invitation for the wedding then?
if you let us all know the rough dates, we can pencil it in our calendars

Thank you mate, once it all calms down we are going to Paris where I will get on my knee again. Always wanted to get married in Paris, but we are not rushing.

As above, a lot of the time you won't notice but here's my thoughts. We spend a lot of money on these impressive cameras to get the best results we can so why 'cripple' them? Based on this I shoot uncompressed unless I know I'm going to be doing some heavy burst shooting for sports/wildlife in which case I do drop it into compressed. I do this to save time, but also I can't get the maximum frame rate with uncompressed files.

With regards to the processing I'm not sure it's down to the file size but more the amount of pixels it's trying to process. The reason that I say this is that when I had my A7RIV it really bogged lightroom down so I started converting my uncompressed raw (.ARW) to .DNG files using Adobe's DNG converter. This adds LOSSLESS compression and file sizes were about half the size (50-60mb IIRC). However, I didn't find it speeded LR up.

Took this last night with the A7Rii and Sigma 45mm f2.8 Contemporary, fitted with +2 close-up lens. Processed in DXO PureRaw.

Congrats!

You are in the right place to source wedding togs! :)

Just dipping my toe into astrophotography so I bought a Samyang 135mm F2 from a really nice young chap on Facebook. It seems to get rave reviews for astrophotography but I thought I'd give a quick test wide open in the garden, insanely narrow dof!
