The Amazing Sony A1/A7/A9/APS-C & Anything else welcome Mega Thread!

New 24-40mm and 50mm FE lenses coming next.

About time the 50 was replaced 24-40mm zoom though?

Aggh turns out that was an error next new lenses are 24mm, 40mm & 50mm that makes more sense.

We just haven't got enough 50mm options clearly.

The 40mm could be interesting....

So Guys, I was advised to post in here rather than start a separate thread. I am after another lens but am having issues deciding... I started last week wanting more reach so looked at the 200-600mm, then watching the reviews on YouTube they started comparing with the 100-400... Argggh. Then fast forward to this week and I'm also looking at a 135mm lens.

I'm leaning towards the 100-400 and MPB have one reserved for me after I traded my final Fuji Lenses to concentrate on one system. I suppose my pondering is because I've never purchased from them before. I want something with a little reach to capture the wee birds and as I live in Newmarket I want to try and take some Horse pictures. I'm presuming I need something with reach as I don't want to spook them. Any advise would be welcome, I need to purchase something before 1st April as the money currently burning a hole in my pocket will be directed somewhere else if not.
For little bird photos reach is everything so I would suggest the 200-600mm if you don't mind the weight. However, depending on how close you get to the horses and how much of a close up you want then the 100-400mm might be a better option. You can always do what I've done and buy the 100-400mm and then the 1.4TC for those times you want the extra reach, if you're happy with F8 using the TC.

Could be a long overdue update of the 50mm f1.8?

Idk, it actually looks to be better than the RF50/1.8.
I think at that price point most manufacturers cut corners.
Where have you seen it to compare to the RF? I've just read the article and it looks like it's going to be a G lens so certainly not going to be a dirt cheap nifty fifty.

It will likely be designed to compete with the Nikon Z 50. It will be sharper, lighter, have faster a.f and will be slightly cheaper, that is what Sony do. :ROFLMAO:

Those new lenses are a good idea will give a little more choice for those that want a 24/50 but don't want the cost of the GM lenses and probably a weight saving too.

The 40mm is the odd one, might be interesting.

I agree, I have both of these lenses and usually pick up the 200-600mm on a daily basis

Just buy the 200-600mm - I'm not keen on when using the zoom on the 100-400mm it sticks out like a cheapo Sigma - the 200-600mm has internal zoom so a much better option for me anyhow :)

The idea of a 100-400 is ok if you use a Sony 1.4TC to take you to 580mm ( I have the 1.4TC) you then must consider the £479+ extra cost for the TC surely???

Not directly but was looking at videos of it in YouTube
You can compare these two videos for example for IQ

His AF test I believe is with the old firmware on A7Rii, Sony works much better on later bodies and with firmware update.

The 200-600mm is definitely a better choice if it's just used for wildlife (y)

P.S. you math is slightly out ;) :p

Oh that's the old one, I thought you were referring to the new one hence my surprise ;)
Yes yes was talking about the old one.

With Sony you don't actually lose a whole lot optically. Yes it's not razor sharp but as you can see it's perfectly usable on 42mp. For its price is perfectly fine. I wouldn't use the RF on anything more than 24mp.

Looks to be like they are basically providing the option for those that might be looking at Nikon 24, 35, 50 f1.8 lenses.

Though the Nikon Z 24mm/1.8 is already as large and not as good as the 24GM. It's cheaper though.

I simply do not understand comparing lenses from other, incompatible, makers, unless it’s as part of a “moving systems” exercise. :) Not intending to offend anyone, just saying.

Moving systems is always an option :)
Though I have kinda given up on Nikon, I keep a close eye on canon RF system. I have contemplated moving to canon a few times and might still do. At the moment lenses are holding me back :)

For full-frame, I'm kind-of stuck with Sony. In the main it's down to the A7C. Whilst its ergonomics are flawed, it provides the best physical format (weight AND shape) for my needs, and the available/affordable lenses are ample.

A7C is other half of the reason to stick with Sony. Its my missus' body and for first time we have been able to share lenses (or rather she just uses one lens and I use A7C as my 2nd body)
In the past she's used bunch of compacts before the A7C. Being able to share accessories, batteries etc is a big benefit. Plus I have a proper backup body now, those compacts never really cut the mustard for me.

Having had that 50 on a later body, it must be utterly dreadful on an older one. Got mine for £135 on an Amazon deal, and even at that price it went back. Optically the best ordinary 50 I ever owned, but the AF missed much more than it hit. OK at f8 if it would lock, but otherwise......

I have the 55mm f1.8 and I'm sure I can see those extra 5mm. It may be all in my mind but that's how it seems so I could be interested in a new 50mm f1.8 but the old one never interested me because of reports of issues with the focus. The 50mm f2.8 macro I had for a day was also critised for focus and hunting in some reviews and it was just unusable as an AF lens on my old A7 and that experience has put me off anything where hunting or any other focus issue is even hinted at.

If this new one has a decent focus system not a crappy cost cutting one that probably wont work on my A7 I could be interested.

I wasted my DXO PhotoLab trial, but I did some reading up and someone said that you can apply camera profiles from most any cameras, and sony cameras look better there than LR anyway.. interesting I thought.

It's on offer at the moment, decided I'd just buy the software..

I increased EV by 0.91, added some sharpness to DXO as it doesn't by default, and I picked near enough the same place on Louise's grey jumper for white balance (can't transfer settings)

I'm pretty jazzed about that Hasselblad colour profile!

That's your favourite?

As a photograph I prefer the first one. On my screen anyway.

I doubt it, I think it'll belike the 35 1.8 and 85 1.8 FE

Maybe not but the G designation got me thinking these may not be pitched at the very bargain end. My 20mm is a G and that has a ring... that was my thinking. We'll soon know but I'm hoping the 50mm is a nice one with an aperture ring :D I can't see them doing another 35mm f1.8, maybe a G, as the f1.8 hasn't been out too long but who knows?

PS.
Oh, and as I mentioned the other day how about a really nice 28mm? The original is a nice lens and quite compact but maybe not as nice a lens as some that have come after it.

LR colour fidelity’s my favourite. The Adobe’s too magenta in the skin tones, and the DXO ones have a weird cast to my eyes and too warm.

The first one has too much magenta for my taste, and yes so far I think I prefer the last one - i feel like the facial features become more defined, colour contrast between hair and skin.

The warmth can just be my WB picker being slightly off for each application - it could probably do with a small boost to the EV at this point.

slightly cooler.

I find it ironic but refreshing that many new lenses, especially the higher-end ones, are sporting aperture control rings. It’s not too long ago that this was the preserve of Fuji and they were dismissed as being old-fashioned.

The AF isn't the best but its not inaccurate either in my experience. It's a bit slow and jerky (reminds me of old screw drive minoltas) to keep up for fast moving subjects but its accurate IME.

I've always liked aperture ring. quicker to use IMO.
I with they'd include it on all lenses.

Is the last one not just showing more defined features because it’s the Blad rather than the software? They do look better than before, I’m not sure there’s much in it with the colour fidelity, I’ll have to download them and look side by side (y)

I’m not fussed about aperture rings, but I wish they’d put range scales back on.

It's the Sony, just with the blad profile.. and it probably looks better because it's flickr instead of forum :D

Ahh right, I thought it was impressive you managed to take the EXACT shot with both camera :ROFLMAO:

I would prefer no aperture rings I find them a pain as not all my lenses have them I don’t use them. I have taped the rings down on all my GM lenses to stop them from getting knocked.

Not sure if this is the best thread to ask in or not but does anybody here have an Sony a1 yet?
I'm currently selling my other camera bodies and putting the money from those towards an a1 so was after some comments from someone with first hand experience.
