The Amazing Sony A1/A7/A9/APS-C & Anything else welcome Mega Thread!

One from today's walk. I'm trying to use a different focal length each day so took the 16-35mm out trying to get some different dog shots, It never quite worked as I had hoped but there is a germ of an idea or two because I am trying new things. I also should have used the A9 for this as the frame rate is too slow on the A7R IV and it happens so quickly there is no way you can time the shot. If only I could teach the girls to throw a ball it would be much easier!

@dancook I know you've been playing about with colours and have yet to find something that you're happy with. I'm kind of in the same boat and there's aspects of Adobe Profiles that I like and aspects of Camera Profiles that I like but can't merge the two. I know you tried the Color Fidelity profiles recently, what did you make of them and are they worth shelling out £18 for?

The Adobe color profile has heavy on magenta, the fidelity colour profile cures that.

I won't use it extensively until covid is over I can finally go back to work.. but I'm pretty optimistic about it.

Thanks, I might give it a bash then. I find the camera profiles a little too 'green', but agree the adobe can be very magenta. I tried turning the magenta down in the profile section but it still didn't look right.

It was either sunrise or sunset - they were pushed a bit, but no more than I'd have expected to push files from my D610 without trouble. There's no pictures because they went in the 'bin' where they belonged. :p

I don’t get that problem on my MacBook Pro 2014 with only 8GB RAM, it’s obviously slower than my iMac with 32GB but it also handles basic video editing of 2-3 minute 4K clips reasonably well.

hmm... I have shot plenty sunrise and sunsets and it hasn't been a problem tbh.

I wonder if what you saw in the sky was due to the automatic lens correction in the camera.

Interesting. I’ve actually been re-editing some A7RIV files tonight and it’s bogged down again. Processor works overtime as the computer gets hot and the fans go crazy.
 
Given the success of the Tamron/Sigma 150-600mm DSLR lenses I wonder why they’ve not made any mirrorless versions yet?

They'll come but will probably be a little while yet. The DSLR mounts were in production for more than two decades before they showed up.

They are specialist lenses that only a few people would buy hence the last ones to get made.

My theory is that it's the uncompressed RAW that's causing the slow down.

When was the last time the thermal paste was replaced? That's what my XPS used to do until I redid the paste.

Doesn't sound right to me.

Have you thought about doing a clean install of the OS ? Mine has improved a bit since I updated to Mojave.

Maybe. The issue went away when I went uncompressed.

If the machine is >3 years old then it's possibly worth paying someone to do it - I was really surprised at the difference it made.

My Macbook needed reinstalling every 18 months to maintain performance at tolerable levels, presumably updates crufted things up.

MacBooks do gather a lot of crap over time and it hides it away so you cannot even see it and clean it up.
you can buy software that helps with this (not sure how well they work I have never tried them) or of course nuke the system and start from scratch.\

the "Other" category slowly increases in size over time. Its greyed out so you cannot actually see what's in there easily unless you go fishing in the unix filesystem.
Annoys the hell out of me! why can't I see what's on my own computer!! :mad:

MBP’s getting hot is nothing new, the new 16” ones suffer pretty bad too which is why a lot of people are waiting for the M1

TBH everything else runs brilliantly including Logic Pro X (and I use a lot of plug ins) and video editing software, it’s just LR when I’ve used high MP images.

I did a fresh install a while back when it played up with the Z7 files but it made no difference.

A lot of the time it can run fine, but if I’m quickly making numerous fine edits, flicking through images quickly or constantly flicking from one image to another (like I was doing tonight messing about with colour profiles) the CPU soon gets hot and that usually means I’ll get the spinning beach ball.

It’s been noticeably better processing the 24mp files of the A9ii though (y)
 
Anyone got the Sony 20mm f1.8 lens? I’m currently thinking I’d like something a little bit wider than the 24-105 I currently have but not something that’s silly wide like the 12-24 f4. Anyone got any thoughts on it or other third party lenses along the same lines?

I had the Samyang AF 18mm f2.8 and thought it was a great little lens. Feels a bit cheap but optically very good IMO.
 
Another lens I’m considering is the tamron 17-28 f2.8. If I paired that with the tamron 28-200 they would pretty much cover my landscape uses in just 2 lenses. That would mean letting the 24-105 go. I’ve quite liked that lens so I’m not sure that’s the right way to go.

The sheer quantity of crap that the OS generates and hides from the user makes me furious. A sidecar file for EVERY file. I could go back to Apple, but it's not great.

I am going through the same (thought) process expect I am practically one step ahead of you :LOL:
So for travel I did swap from 24-105 to Tamron 28-200mm. I have a sony 12-24mm f4 and a samyang 45mm f1.8. so that my three lens setup...

But I am too thinking do I really need/want 12-24mm.... can I live with 17-28mm or 20G? I used to have 16-35GM before this and laowa 10-18mm and laowa 15mm f2 before that. I have been around the block a little on finding the right UWA.... think what I really want is something like Nikon Z 14-30mm f4 (but sharper at f4).
So far I have worked out I don't need 12mm wide but I'd like wider than 24mm and I can live with f4 :ROFLMAO:

I have one. Lovely little lens. It really is small. Focuses nice and close and image quality is great too.

I have a 3 lens setup which seems to work better for me. I tried adding a 4th lens to the line-up which was a Macro lens but it never really got used when i was a Canon user.

As a Sony user i have the following:
Sony 24-105 -- very sharp, good general purpose lens i like the extra reach out to 105mm.
Sony 55mm 1.8 -- Exceptionally sharp and i get the option of using f1.8 if really needed but i do not naturally see photos at the 55mm focal length. I find i view the world slightly wider.
Loxia 21mm 2.8 -- Beautifully made metal construction and lovely and sharp in a very small package. its MF only but i get a lot of pleasure using this lens as it makes you think about what parts of the photo are going to be sharp via peaking and it just makes for a more pleasurable experience of actually taking the photo.
Rather than just rattling of shots with an AF lens.
I also seem to naturally fit with the 21mm focal length in terms of my view of the world when taking photos.
Back when i was a Fuji user i had the 14mm lens ( 21mm eq ) and loved it which is why i went for the same focal length with the loxia.

its a great lens and fairly sharp too. 24-105mm is a tad sharper with better bokeh, rendering and sunstars.
on a 24mp sensor you really won't notice the difference in sharpness, on a 61mp sensor it shows a little especially mid frame to corners area. stopped down to f8 it fairly evens out.

It's alright, it's a jack of all trades but probably the best one I have ever used, it's best feature for me is the f2.8 at the wide end. It's a good size and light, it's also a good price.
It's biggest weakness for me is that it doesn't go to 24, I'd have rather it be 24-180 or something like that.
 
The Sony 20mm f1.8 is IMO just a fantastic lens and one nice and maybe unexpected thing is it's very fast to focus. Even on my normally leisurely focusing A7 it's just about instantaneous and brings my A7 up to the focus speed of my MFT cameras. I don't know what advantage that gives a 20mm lens, but it's nice to have :D

I bought mine as I used to have a 20mm f1.8 in my DSLR days and fancied another. I haven't used the Sony much but then I haven't used anything much recently... but I am dreaming of going on a cruise to see the northern lights one day and if I do get to that 20mm will be going with me.

I don't think the 20G was out when I bought my 21mm Voigtlander...... If it was, I now wish I had the 20G instead in a way even with how nice the CV is to use and the results it gets.

I did go to MPB to trade the CV21 and Samyang 24/1.4 EF mount but they offered me such a crap price I didn't bother.....

Designing lenses for 24mm is optically harder apparently or so Roger from lens rentals claims. It make the lens optically more complex, slower and less sharp overall I think.
Eg: Nikon Z 24-200mm

It looks good, the main issue possibly being blobbies with the sun in the frame.

I’m assuming you’re meaning when it comes to the all-in-ones as the 24-105mm is pretty sharp?
