The Amazing Sony A1/A7/A9/APS-C & Anything else welcome Mega Thread!

I've just been reading the Voigtlander 35mm f2 apo thread on FM.

The 50mm f2 is thought by some to be amongst the best 50mm lenses ever made, I wonder if this new 35mm will perform as well? One interesting feature mentioned in that thread is the 50mm gives round bokeh at f2 and f2.8. I wonder if they'll carry this forward with the 35mm?

But there's the f1.2 alternatives. Copied from that thread, quoting Philip Reeve...

"If you are in the lucky position that spending a little over $1k on a 2/50 won’t cause you any financial stress go for it: You will enjoy handling it. You will also enjoy the images you take with it and you can be certain that there is no better for some applications applications. For example for landscape photography where speed isn’t important but sharpness, contrast, flare resistance and sunstars clearly make the AL 2/50 best in class and the images you take with it on a high resolution camera will hold up to gigantic enlargement.

But if you are in the more typical situation that this amount of money is a big investment to you I can only advise to not be blinded by the Voigtlander’s technical perfection. Other lenses give in my eyes nicer images for a wider range of uses. Take for example Voigtlander’s own 1.2/50 which is close in price and size but offers 1.5 stops more and also nicer bokeh. Sure the 2/50 AL is a lot better corrected but at the typical enlargements I find aberrations to be hardly ever an issue while speed and bokeh are easily visible in most images."

I suppose the same may be true of the 35mm f2 v 35mm f1.2.

These Voigtlanders are gorgeous lenses and maybe make my old film era lenses redundant.

I have 2 cars and am looking at buying another. Need something bigger to cart the dogs about in :ROFLMAO:

The most cars I've had at once is three. Lotus Elise, MK1 MX5 and a 1967 MGB roadster.

At one point I had 12:ROFLMAO:

I am much more sensible now. Am just gonna get an old banger of an estate / jeep / van will only use it for taking the dogs out.

My wife has just quit her job as it was too much for her (palliative care nurse) so we still have the VW Tiguan for the time being.
I am working from home with only 1 visit a week into the office, so we should be ok for the time being.
If and when work decide they want us all back in the office full-time, I will just get a cheap VW Polo.
My long-term plan is to invest further into stocks and crypto.... can always buy another Tesla in the future.

I'm not into crypto but there are some excellent funds kicking about at the moment, they seem to be riding this global pandemic very successfully. Best of luck with your investments! (y)

Not mine but this lovely girl was bounding around a fair old rate and loving the snow. I took the opportunity to test fast incoming subjects and can't complain, although to be fair conditions were pretty perfect with both subject and lighting.

I've been waiting for their review, I has every intention of pre-ordering the A1 immediately but I held off to see some proper review, plus the fact that we're in lockdown until who knows when so wouldn't be able to use it for what I wanted anyway :(

This isn't what I call a proper review but it is interesting how Canon have caught and in a lot of cases beat Sony in the AF department which was Sony's selling point at one stage. I was really hoping that the A1 would nail animal/bird AF but it appears it don't.

I'm certainly not seeing £2500 better performance on the A1 compared to the R5 and it would/will be interesting to see what Canon can do with their top of the line camera ie the R1 when they release it.

I'll probably up an A1 after lockdown to try but it's a lot of money and I'm just not as excited for it now as I thought I would be.

I take a strictly no risk approach these days and everything is in cash ISA's and ordinary savings accounts, all staying under the protected amount limit. I don't need a massive income and I'm much happier just not worrying about money or market fluctuations but when I get my company pension in May I might just splash out and buy something, maybe all the Twin Peaks bar flavours in one go :D

Oh, I also have premium bonds. The likelihood of winning a huge amount may be remote but they're a bit of fun. The limit was £30k when I bought mine but I think it's gone up now. Just googled and the limit is £50k.

These cameras are just in another world to me and my wants and needs. I would one day like an Ax camera which can shoot silently and as quickly as my Panasonic MFT cameras but then I think that for the few occasions I want/need that I might as well just use the Panasonics :D

Would you mind asking him to add the Nikon 200-500? (y)

You can email him at idancorreo@gmail.com (y)

I'll watch it later, but I had my suspicions it wouldn't match Canon Bird Eye AF. I guess the true test will be seeing how it is with sports. Other than the resolution I'm not seeing anything significantly better than the A9's?

That resolution together with outstanding A9 matching AF gives more scope to crop.

Three very nice shots Lee, liking all of them with the two mono presentations being my preferred.

Cheers George, much appreciated. (y)

Geez, first people are getting new cameras just for dog pictuers and now cars....I am never getting a dog, ever. lol

:ROFLMAO:

To be fair we have 4 dogs and they are getting very bored ofwalks to the local park.

We could get a dog carrier trailer type thing but a half decent one costs way more than an old banger for carting them about.

I have decided to keep the my sony gear for now. Based on reviews so far (not the Northrup one) I'd be swapping to canon but its not worth it. May be canon is better today but in.a year's time?
It will become a never ending circle. One thing I do agree with on Northrup's video is its best to stick with the brand you have.
Also for the first time both missus and I can shoot the same system thanks to A7C. I'd lose that benefit. Plus canon doesn't have the lenses Sony does. Add the lockdown and the lack of photography into the mix there is no point in even buying a new body in the same system. My A7rIV and A7C is more than good enough.

You are officially cured of GAS, congrats.

Is that just buying and selling crypto or mining it?

Canon has nothing to tempt me away from Sony tbh, and even if it did the lenses are too pricey (might have mentioned that before ;))
I am thanks :D

Sorry, I should have separated it more. I mean funds as in your regular stocks and shares and not crypto.

Just a simple candid street style Snapograph taken at London UK showing part of a Trombone that’s being played by someone in a Sally Army band.
I'm also working on a personal project called Faceless and this snap will be included.

I moved to Nikon from Canon about 6 years ago. I was into landscapes and was seduced by the dynamic range and resolution of the D810. The D850 was and is amazing and I have kept those and my main lenses while now selling my soul to Sony. I get the feeling I will be back to Canon at some point as it is the most likely maker that I will be able to afford a 50mp camera, with high frame rate and focussing fast enough for sport and an affordable 400mm F2.8. At that point I will go back to being a single system shooter. Hopefully Nikon makes something so I can sell the D850s and get a mirrorless equivalent of that camera with a faster frame rate.

Great clarity, and I love the reflections in the instrument.

If anything I can see myself back at Nikon, but if and when that happens who knows. I’m curious to try Canon just because I haven’t used them before but have no burning desire.

I started on Canon, the 400D then I got the magical 5D classic. The AF wasn't great though and Nikon had the epic D3 available so across I went and got two of those.

Then another shift to Sony and the A6000 but the AF disappointed so back to Nikon with the D750. Then I wanted to reduce my load a little and the Sony CSC offered the great AF for the size of body so now with the A9.

I quite fancy medium format but I also fancy something decent for video. The latter will probably be more appealing post-pandemic.

Agree the RF lens prices are eye watering and from all the tests i've seen Sigma equivalents are not only far cheaper but outperform most of the Canon glass. Sony certainly have a great lens range. But........after an indifferent start i'm loving the R6.

I think third party glass is definitely starting to rival main brand, which is only good news for us. I'm still waiting for an 18-50mm f4 though ;)

Third party glass has given me the opportunity to own lenses that are affordable, relatively light and give good quality images but aren't the lenses that I use for my main interests of wildlife and macro. The third party lenses sit there begging to be used and I'm desperate to use them when the current situation allows.
For those "specialities" I own Sony glass because they are the absolute best. Without Tamron, Sigma, Samyang and Laowa making lenses of the quality they do now I'd only have two lenses :D

Which Sony glass do you have?

I knew someone would ask that :D.
Sony 200-600 and the 90mm macro lens. The macro lens is probably the sharpest lens I have ever used and doubles as a portrait lens.
I have a love/hate relationship with macro  The 200-600mm looks a great lens, I’d have bought it if it was lighter.

We totally need a 12-600mm f2.8 pancake lens with 2x macro capability
