The Amazing Sony A1/A7/A9/APS-C & Anything else welcome Mega Thread!

There has got to be a big difference between the latest A7Riv and A7C, it's made a big difference from my A7R, just losing the jump mantra a big difference.
Is that predictive text gone mad? ;)

Mines possibly worse an October 1961 E Type Jaguar (preferably built on Friday the 13th!) although not millions, I'm guessing there's about as much chance of finding one....
Porsches weren’t being made in 1951 :(

Unfortunately not, but I would like to get my hands on the A7R iv to see if it's too big. I'm guessing the A7C will be similar to my A6000 I had?

The two main things I shoot now are family (can be fast moving and fairly low light) and stitched panos (I can't help but wonder if the huge pixel count will give me epic panos). I did find myself leaving the D750 at home a lot because of the size. I've been using that camera dimensions comparison site but it's not really the same as actually seeing them I guess.

A7C is slightly larger/thicker and heavier than the A6000. But its in the same order of magnitude I'd say.
A7RIV is more the size of a higher end APS-C DSLR. Not too far from a D750 actually.

Depends on how you plan on doing panos.... if you plan on cropping lots from wide shots before stitching, then you may benefit from A7RIV. If you are going to get your field of view sorted optically and stitch at full res I think A7c will do just fine. In fact if you are constantly stitching panos (like at least 5-6 images) from full-res A7RIV files, unless you have beast of computer it will get laggy, slow and annoying very quickly.

I soooo want an A7c but I know it'd frustrate me.

Why aren't you guys with high mp count cameras downsizing files before stitching? Is it because you want a massive file? I'm happy with a largish file which is big enough to print should I want to. Other than that looking good on screen is enough for me.

I'm just interested in why some are doing these massive stitches.

Too much effort to downsize :ROFLMAO:
Just an extra step in the workflow. I just prefer to keep things at "original" resolution till I export.

Sorted. Yeah do most of my browsing on my phone these days.

At some point you will need a new MAC or PC - realistically they have a 5-10yr life span. Things like newer OS's aren't supported on the Machine (real Apple thing that) or the machine doesn't have the power to run the new OS (windows issue and after a while windows stop supported older OS's) - so at some stage you will have to buy a machine :D

When you build in a few years time 32c/64t and 128gb RAM will not be that expensive. It is quite pricey now - but tech advances and there won't be a run on GPU's like there is now.

I like to build a very powerful machine to run 6-10yrs every ram cycle - DDR3, then DDR4 etc.

I gaurantee you that a £2-£3k machine in 3yrs time will monster through 100mp files, even if you stitch a few together, like it just doesn't care:D

Exactly, Im just begining the process of speccing up my new PC. My existing one was built in 2011, and was at the time top of the range 3970X 6/12core, 23Gb RAM and dual AMD 390's - it doesn't do too bad even now.
Based on a similar 3K cost, I should be in a place to order just as Zen 4 is released sometime next year.

Im the same with Cameras, A7r2 and an a6000, I like the 6000, great little camera, my only hate point is the crappy EVF, that made me get the a7r2 which I think is still a superb camera. It will do me until Feb 2022 when Im 51 and expecting an expensive present :-) We have cancelled my 50th next month due to Covid so will make my 51st the big celebration instead...

I use CS5 and although there is as far as I remember an ability to batch downsize in the raw processor there isn't in the jpeg editor (or if there is I can't see it) so each file has to be downsized in turn which is a pita but IMO preferable to trying to stitch multiple files from my 24mp A7 together.

I do need a new computer as mine is falling apart but I like to get my moneys worth and I've only had this one... er... a long time.

So you can have a 500mp monster image  I only tried it once tbh, if I'd been more bothered by the image I might have tired downsizing but for what I was doing jpeg was fine (y)

I've gone for 2x EPYC 7282, 128gb RAM, QuadtroRTX400 and fully expect that to run like grease lightening - even when I hopefully move to 100mp and beyond later down the line.

A lot of the bulk can come from the lenses rather than the bodies. I've had the D750 and it's smaller than the D750 for sure, but obviously not as small as the A7c, but then I don't think there's huge difference between the A7RIV and A7c. My computer (Macbook Pro i7 quad core processor, 1TB SSD, 4GB GPU 16GB RAM) really struggles with stitched panos from the A7RIV, but then I was trying to stitch around 15-20 using the brenizer method. I had to use jpegs in the end.

I think you've a typo on one of your D750 references? The lack of the viewfinder hump isn't a big physical difference but I find it makes it that bit easier to squeeze into tight bags however it would depend on lenses, if I was planning to use anything other than small primes I'd want the bigger body with the VF bump.

When stitching 21 20MP raw files I've noticed Lightroom use up to 30GB of ram so I'd dread to think what the huge files from the A7RIV would do.

Oops, deffo a typo meant the D750 is definitely bigger than the A7RIV (y)

Ahh, but will it play Crysis? :D

I have looked at Threadripper, but Im going to wait and see what Zen 4 brings in the way of core count, plus I will get USB4 etc, Threadripper is a possible option though....

How do you see how much RAM LR is using, I'd like to monitor this to see why mine runs so slowly?

Excellent Stephen, and impressive at half a second handheld. (y)
Thanks. I wasn’t sure if it could be done as I was standing on a metal bridge which can vibrate from the roar of the water. Certainly easy just a little faster.

I received some new wireless buds today as I'm going to start jogging to try and lose some weight around the waist. They're only £30 and rival my more expensive wired buds. Excellent sound quality, very warm and detailed. Took a couple of photos with the Sigma 56mm.

What about it would frustrate you/

No front dial and having to manually switch between electronic and mechanical shutter. I think those are the two big things. Didn't they say this is an entry level camera? If so maybe another will come along but looking at the A6xxx line I don't think they'll ever make an A7c with a front dial although auto switching of the shutter may surprise me and come in a firmware update.

Mrs WW wants some of these for her birthday. November is a long time to wait so I told her she can have them anytime but she still says she wants them for her birthday... Women? :D

How do you have an auto electronic/mechanical shutter unless you mean that it switches to electronic when you go above the max mechanical shutter speed?

I think it’s anything but entry level. It’s designed for a particular sort of photographer who wants to travel light and with less bulk. I would say that it was (seems to be) designed specifically for prime lenses. I’m with you on the lack of auto switching between mechanical and electronic shutters.

Just use electronic all the time I haven't needed mechanical at all yet.
Front dial is a non issue either when you have so many customized buttons plus you use mostly manual lenses or lenses like the Sony 20mm with an aperture ring.
Read on fredmiranda lots of manual shooters very happy.

I'd at least give one ago woofwoof.

Lol. Well, there seems to be more wireless buds on the market than lenses and cameras put together. But mine came highly recommended at Head-fi. They're IPX8 rated which means they can be dunked into a glass of water, so I can take showers with them in. :D If you want to get them for Mrs woof woof, they're called Mpow M30. :)

Yes, this is how my Panasonic cameras work. They have three settings, mechanical, electronic and auto. I leave mine on auto and it selects the electronic shutter above 1/4,000 and of course there's no need to select mechanical under artificial lights as it only seems to select electronic for the faster shutter speed. It really does work well enough.
