As it's quiet.

I like this picture. I like the place and when I'm getting arty or thoughtful it's about contrast and transition, barriers and pathways, one place to another, light to dark, through the arch of the trees to beyond etc.

It's a difficult choice though. The AF of the Sony v the build quality of the Voigtlander. I suppose sunstars could be a factor to consider and the Voigtlander will win here but there's quite significant vignetting with the Voigtlander though and the Sony is just all round excellent but not as lovely to use.

Think it's a wise choice or get the 24GM if you are willing to spend £1K+

That voigtlander isn't very good at f1.4, coma makes it unusable for astrophotography anyway. All in all its not a lens I'd buy personally.

24 is too close to the 28 range I have, 20 will be perfect I think.

I suppose it depends on the aperture and what's acceptable.

I went for the Sony for the extra flexibility AF gives as I wanted more of an all round lens. But I can see how the Voigtlander could appeal :D

yes but you can shoot the Sony wide open :)
and as you mention there is AF plus you get better sharpness. Lets face it the corners aren't anything to write home about at f1.4 and f2 on the voigtlander.
you buy a f1.4 lens to use at f1.4, if you are going to use it at f2.8 you might as well buy something like the Loxia 21.
 
But the Voigtlander is good across the frame at f4 whilst f1.4 is available for other uses. Being better than the 24mm for across the frame sharpness (says Philip,) is quite something.

Of the two I'd choose the Sony 20mm for optical performance and AF but that Voigtlander would be a joy to use if AF isn't needed.

I just swapped the 24GM for the 20 G, no regrets, equal build quality, the extra 4mm is very handy and it focusses very close if you want to do some close ups, 6cm from the end of the lens !!!
 
I nearly missed this thread it was so far down the page :D

As it's quiet, a bitterly cold day and as we walked the weather went from sunny but cold to heavy rain and then hail. It wasn't so bad with the weather to our backs but walking into it Mrs WW couldn't go on and we had to get the bus back. Oh! The Shame!

the new sigma is really quite nice. the new design is lovely and although ive not really put it through its paces in terms of testing it in different lighting, it has so far impressed.

on the subject of the physical design, i wonder now if they are going to look at the 105 f1.4 and make a much smaller version of that. Nikon seemed to do a good job with theirs which is a good bit smaller than the current one.

The bokeh does look lovely but is that first portrait orientation picture a crop as there's no cats eye vignetting but it's very visible in the second?

yes ive cropped in a bit if memory serves. but you'll see oval bokeh on most lenses outside the center of the frame.

yeah I have liked it very much too. since you asked me last time I have even managed to get some shooting into the light (sun). Seemed to handle it rather well actually. I felt GM would have been a touch better but the sigma isn't bad.

hmmm... I do wonder what they are thinking... based on their 35mm f1.2, I was expecting an 85mm f1.2 but they went in the opposite direction. No 70-200mm f2.8 as of yet... there were some rumours of it which seems to have dried out. all in all could be any ones guess what they'll come out with.

I know what it is but was just wondering why it isn't there in the first but is in the second but a crop explains it.

perhaps they are working on making their existing lenses for canikon mount. which should keep them busy. ive heard rumours they are going going to sort fuji with the dc lenses too.

We often have a rose or two into December and have had them on Christmas day but here we still have one on 7th January. Everything else is gone though.
