The Amazing Sony A1/A7/A9/APS-C & Anything else welcome Mega Thread!

At least when it's back it should be a known quantity, there's always a slight worry when buying used.

Some of these look a little oversaturated on my screen, all lovely shots though.

Other than that...

Please stop mentioning Voigtlander lenses that I don't already own!

PS.
I went out today with my A7 and Sony 35mm f1.8 but it stayed in the bag and I didn't take a single picture. It just happened.

Unfortunately my eyes tend to make me go heavy on the saturation, so you’re quite right to mention it. That Voigtlander is a lovely lens to use and very easy to focus. Sorry. :p

You're not going to stop are you!

I might resist.

I'm still hovering over add to basket for the Sigma 35mm f2.

@Stephen L The 2nd photo has lots of potential as a straight on view with the house on the right.
With all the markings in the doors surface etc, maybe even a black and white photo to emphasis it.

I have a Loxia 21mm, and it produces similar results to the Voigtlander by the look of it

Yes, I’ve taken quite a few of these cottages. Until recently the white left-hand (as you view it) has had a “for sale” sign on it, spoiling the picture. But it’s now been sold. You’re right - that door is worthy of a study on its own.

Got 2 x Neewer and a charger for £46, not really used them yet, put them in to check for error messages and none so happy days.

Same here. Was planning to test out on Saturday at the football but that’s now cancelled.

The rumor guy is convinced there'll be a new A9 early in 2021 and lots of lenses, some new, some updates...

I wonder if any will be f1.2's, just to confound the Canikon fanboys who still insist they're impossible. Other than that the obvious one to update seems to the the much lambasted for consistency 35mm f1.4.

Hi all, not been on here for a while

Just testing out my new Sony 24-105 on A7riv. Was a bit skeptical of getting this lens, having got used to the image quality of the 55mm and 20mm, and was expecting a vast difference in quality, but have to say I've found the 24-105 a fantastic lens.

It's a great lens, i've shot 1/2 sec handheld easily with it, the OSS does a great job.

I changed from a Tamron 28-75 and prefer the Sony - the 2.8 to 4 doesn’t really bother me and the images are as good

Yes, OSS does seem capable, such a good all-round lens

I was deciding to drop the extra cash on the GM 24-70, but the cheaper cost and extra reach of the 24-105 made the decision for me. I was concerned that I would not like it, but happy to say it's exceeded my expectations on image quality

A dog in the woods yesterday. Barking at me a lot, lol, but sweet little thing. Testing my Sigma 56mm. These were at 5000 auto ISO as it was late in the day and not much light so I used Topaz to clean them up.

A9 users.....
What settings do you use for birds in flight?
:D
My go to is tracking wide electronic shutter and Manual settings in bright light i start with 800 iso f5.6 1/3200 sec with a FE 600f4 +1.4tc i also use responsive 5 on the tracking setting .
I also have a button set for single large focus point with tracking so i can easily switch between the 2 using back button focus. this is with the A9mkII but the A9 should be the same.

Hi Rob. I've not quite got to grips with birds in flight, had a little go a few weeks back. Although my sony is a much lesser beast from yours I think the tracking modes are the same. Do you find tracking wide easier to lock on than tracking zone or tracking flexible spot?

Do you sometimes use auto ISO?

Finally, I've just watched a Manny Ortiz video showing that electronic curtain shutter gives less light and less bokeh when shooting at over 1/1000th sec shutter speed, than with it disabled. He was talking about for portraits but I guess having it disabled might help with BIF as well?

Watched that myself. Seen notes from others that it’s Electronic Front Curtain not Electronic Shutter that causes this. I happily shoot Electronic Shutter although I don’t shoot wildlife or sport..

I think with the A9mkII they are all just as quick so why not have the whole VF working for you, tracking flexible spot is more for picking 1 bird out be it in the sky or on a branch with that set to a button it's easy to use .

electronic curtain shutter Not come across this but as I shoot manual i would not notice it ,I may use auto iso but only if clouds are constantly passing normally as im shooting at around 1/3200 / 1/4000 sec i only have to slow the shutter down with my thumb say to 1/2000 and still be fast enough so I have a stop to play with as long as the clouds are not to thick.

Rob.

If this is electronic first curtain shutter it's often just called EFCS. I use this most of the time as it cuts down on the possibility of shutter shock. I have no idea if there are any other advantages but certainly there are said to be possible disadvantages including uneven illumination and rendering, none of these I've noticed. You'll know if a camera is set to efcs as the shutter noise is different.

No I don't use that Alan just 20 fps electronic totally silent .

Rob.

I'm 99% of the time using full electronic shutter as well. Not found a need for EFCS so far.

I generally have the A9 on M (10fps?) as I found 20fps gave far too many to review and cull.it’s scary how easy it is to rattle off 2000 in a short session when using 20fps and silent shutter. It’s nice to know it’s available if I need the extra speed but generally I dont need 20fps.

I’m another who uses electronic shutter and silent shutter. It’s one of the main reason I swapped to the A9 from the A7R3 . The other reasons being blackout free and awesome AF.
