The Amazing Sony A1/A7/A9/APS-C & Anything else welcome Mega Thread!

85mm Sony f/1.8 or Viltrox guys ?

I tried the Viltrox on Fuji and it was excellent for portraits, less so on moving subjects but I suspect that was probably 50/50 the lens and the cameras AF.

Never tried the Viltrox, but the 85mm f1.8 Sony is pretty damn fast on my A7III.

I have a new 16-35 F4 lens that I can't wait to try out, but I'm not due out until next week. I have put it on the camera and zoomed out to 16mm and it scared the living daylights out of me with how wide it was
It's going to be a learning experience for me....

I came from APS-C and when I got my 14mm on my A7iii I was amazed how wide it was. o_O

IMO the only questions marks against the Sony 85mm f1.8 are that it's f1.8 and some might question the bokeh, the character and the cats eye. The positives include that it's quick to focus and relatively small and light.

I loved the rendering but hated the AF and the fact that my example stopped working completely after an hour or so. All the various 85mm lenses have a trade-off, so it depends where you want your compromise:

Viltrox renders beautifully, but f1.8 (so less subject separation) and less good AF.
Sony 85 f1.8, super-fast & accurate AF but slightly crunchy rendering & busy bokeh.
Samyang 85 f1.4, better AF & sharper than viltrox, better Bokeh but less smooth rendering.
Sigma 85 f1.4, best 85 in the world & smaller than other f1.4s, but more expensive than the others.

I've not used mines much, but the grandkids are here at the weekend so I'll take some portraits with it hopefully.

We're going to a birthday party at the weekend and I was so tempted to take my A7 and Sony 85mm f1.8 but I think I'll take my Panasonic TZ100 instead as it's much less of a geek with a camera look.

Actually I think I'll take both :D

I'll have a look at some example pictures later but it looks a bit expensive to be a part of my little adaptable collection.
I can't find the photos I saw yesterday now, and the ones I can see don't look 'that' special. Is there any way to see your viewing history in Flickr?

Sorry, I don't look at flicker. I just found example pictures by Googling the lens.

One new A7R IV just delivered, as I have not even tried the 28-70mm kit lens yet it can have a go on the new camera.

I use the 28-70 kit lens on my A7Rii.

Be interested how it performs on the 61MP sensor.

As long as I keep it stopped down it's not a bad performer.

Just another one from my new love, the Sigma f1.4 16mm DC DN for APSC lens on my A6500. I'm still only using this for close focus exploiting the sharpness, image separation and the MFD of only 9.84" / 25 cm.
I'm looking forward to using this for fungi macro shots when the time comes.

Mine performed very well on the A7R IV (y)

Can’t complain at that!

Will let you know, the lens feels really nice on it now.

I've only used mine (28-70mm kit lens) a few times as I'm mostly a prime user but whenever I've used it I've been happy with it from wide open.

Actually the last time I used it I'd been meaning to mount the 85mm f1.8 and picked up the zoom by mistake as they're about the same size. I only realised something was wrong when the view looked suspiciously wide and I couldn't stop down to f1.8 :D

A7 and kit lens.

50% crop from that.

So first shot with the A7R IV and the kit lens 28-70mm, this camera is stonkingly great so I have to think what lens to put and leave on for a good while now.
Had to be My Girl Susie too for the first shot.

My Very First Snap In This Thread.:)

Just a simple candid type Snapograph taken at Herne Bay Kent UK of a guy enjoying himself on a Jet Ski.
Not quite as sharp as I would normally like to get my snaps as it was taken from my own small Sail/Motor Boat that was bobbing about quite a bit and the lens was racked out to its full 600mm.

He seems to be in a hurry to retrieve that lost snow globe. Maybe a family heirloom?

ps.
The first of many pictures and more posts, I hope.

He was taking part in some sort of race/competition with a number of other Jet Skiers at the same time, hence why my small boat was bobbing about so much from the wash they were creating.

I've only taken pictures from boats a few times, like when on boat trips at Whitby.

I always remember a thread on here about someone wanting to take pictures from a boat and people recommending a tripod. I thought a fast shutter speed seemed much more sensible.

A couple of snaps from the last time me and Mrs WW took a boat trip at Whitby. Two years ago now.

A7 and Sony 35mm f2.8.

Its a lot harder than it seems when on a boat. I was out last Saturday on my friends and it was a challenge with composing and that was using an 85mm never mind 600mm!

In actual fact as you probably already know your/ones natural body stabilisation is by far the best option when shooting from a boat or anything else moving about. The only time a tripod is of any use is if whatever its standing on is stable.
