The Amazing Sony A1/A7/A9/APS-C & Anything else welcome Mega Thread!

That menu looks terrible. The sensor thingy is interesting.

I actually like the current menu, now that I am used to it, but I know others dislike it and some have been asking for a touch screen menu for sometime. Maybe they will roll it out to other models as well.

Yeah, Im not sure why people dislike the current menu. Seems pretty intuitive to me. Touch menu is great, but that new UI just looks yuck.

Think it gets conformed tomorrow, nothing is sure until then.

Like anything else you seen get used to it, and for all the often you need to delve into the menu anyway it doesn't really concern me too much what they do with it.

On the front of the A7Siii is something extra than just the AF illumination.

Maybe some kind of new focusing assistant? Maybe the laser or depth finder like on phones?

Might be something interesting, the EVF looks huge as well.

Also has a new menu system.

Completely new menu with full touch support. :$

  • The smallest rolling shutter effect in the world.
  • Huge viewfinder with the ability to reduce the field of view of images, for people wearing glasses.
  • The 16-bit raw info applies to recording in movie mode (and not just photos) to an external recorder.
  • The Sony a7siii will have a passive cooling heat sink type system probably made of aluminum (copper, alloy or stainless steel are other options) similar to those used in the Raspberry Pi B board.

Ohh great they put a huge viewfinder on a camera like this which people won't use, why couldn't they have done that with the RIV ir 9II :(

At least there's hope the menu system will change going forward.

Still disappointed that it's only 12 MP though or I would have bought one.

the camera, lens and myself got covered in mud today. need to grab a cover for at least the camera. ive not shot any form of motorsport before, but this motocross was loads of fun, despite the rain.

I’ve not done any motorcross yet, need to pull my finger out and get to an event or two.

It’s a video camera it was never going to be any higher res than 12 mph.

As for the EVF this is brand new tech not yet available with any other manufacturer. It likely wasn’t ready for the A9II or the A7RIV.

The old Sigma 12-24mm I had for my Canon DSLR's was IMO an outstanding lens and for a while was my most used lens. I'd love another lens like that at some point but at the mo I just don't get enough free time to justify spending what something like that would cost.

I had the same lens for Nikon which I bought cheap since I wasn't keen on spending a lot on yet another UWA lens (after the Olympus and Panasonic 7-14mm lenses) and was pleased with it for the money, I've not been able to find something similar for FE.

No, it's a hybrid. Sony have professional video camera lines.

No, it's a hybrid. Sony have professional video camera lines.

They aren't marketing it as a hybrid, it may be able to take photos but its being marketed as a video camera and is squarely aimed at entry level film makers.

Anyone use the A6400 and 18-135? I’m thinking due to limited use I should let my Sony FF kit go. It’s not getting much use and seems a waste sitting in the cupboard unused. I don’t know if it’s a combination of post lockdown and my usual summer dip but having so much expensive gear sitting doing nothing doesn’t seem to make much sense.

I’ve been considering olympus for the smaller form and cheaper kit but I’m not sure it’s the right move especially with the recent announcement about them selling of the camera division. I’d like to keep my hand in with photography as I do enjoy getting out when I have the chance to. It’s hard to explain, getting an image isn’t the same driver as it once was but having a camera means I’m more likely to go to places that I wouldn’t go to if I didn’t have the camera.

The A6400 and 18-135 covers the same equivalent focal range as the Olympus em-1 Mk ii and 12-100. The A6400 and 18-135 pretty much covers my landscape needs in one camera/lens. There just seems to be a lack of longer APS-C lenses :( one thing I know is I’m unlikely to find like for like replacement of the A9, 24-105 and 100-400.

The tamron 28-200mm seems to be reviewing rather well. Perhaps that's the way to go with an A7III for example.

I have also listed my travel lenses in sales :(
I know they won't be used for a while now.

Next to go will be my telephoto 200-600mm but that'd be a very sad day should it come to that.

So you're saying the A7s line which was always marketed as and looks like a hybrid is a video camera? OK.

It's a video camera that can take photos.

Sony have designed this for videographers. Especially wedding videographers.

Videographer groups are practically salivating over the mythical A7s3. My wife's been waiting for this for three years.

No-one is even discussing it seriously in photographer groups. Other than to moan about the 12MP.

And they are moaning/disappointed/not interested/not discussing because they were expecting more from a hybrid camera.

You are being pedantic for no reason.

The new A7SIII is aimed at low level video users for weddings, B and C cameras for higher end stuff etc. The older A7S bodies were aimed at those who needed low light ability and a nice side benefit was that because if that they were good for video.

The new model is no longer aimed at hybrid use. It is very much aimed at video use. All the marketing is aimed at video users.

I know nothing about video, is there a reason you want to keep mp low for video?

Don't care, I'm mainly stills and so are you so this camera is meh,

Don't care if it can do 10k at 240fps on s log 20 with a detachable screen that you can slap on your forehead, it's the image stuff I care more about

No pixel binning.

That's why the R5 is 40 something MP
What does that mean in English? ;)

Edit: just read on pixel binning. Surely the Canon approach is better isn’t it, giving a high mp stills camera and then just as good noise handling via pixel binning for video?

In a hybrid body, less processing, less heat. Look at the the R5, why is it overheating? Well, 45mp, 8k raw at 2,600 mbps (that also offers 33mp raw stills) . Sony have recently been doing (a7sii) 4k60 at 100mbps and the A7SIII (12mp) is rumored to push that to 600mbps. Right or wrong, overheat or don't, there's a big difference in data there and everyone will decide what they need.

So the canon shoots video in raw rather than s-log?
