The Amazing Sony A1/A7/A9/APS-C & Anything else welcome Mega Thread!

Exactly this, to me its a 90% video camera in a hybrid body, which doesnt quite work. The camera has been hyped for bloody ages, might be the S line downfall.

They might surprise us and there might be a market for this camera if the early views are right and it is really a mini Arri, or whatever.

The biggest thing for some may be the fully articulated screen, if it does have one. I can see blogger type people with Sony lenses buying one for that one reason.

Even for stills fully articulating is really great so IMO a very nice update, FINALLY! I hope they'll also use it in the A7iv.

I have always thought I would go back to Nikon at some point after making my way through various bodies from the D40 to D750 but they just don’t offer what Sony can for my needs.

I really hope the z8/z9 pull the rabbit out the hat but they have very tough competition. They need another d750 unicorn (minus the shutter issue, and the z8/9 are not that market).

They need both bodies AND lenses, which is going to take a lot of money. I don't see them having that kinda of capital to R&D them in a short space of time. The longer it takes for them to satisfy the customer base, the more time it gives their users to change system.

Just another bloody comet photo :)

Nice one :) Just editing mine. Seen so many I wasn't too bothered about it but my boy wanted to try to capture it so out we went. Was enjoyable actually as we've not shot nighttime stuff for over a year together I think!! What wasn't enjoyable was dropping him back to his mum's then getting in & trying to get some sleep before the 6am work alarm went off.....:)

Ouch, yes I started at 10 from home today so got away with it somewhat.

Still knackered though

it might be time to go canon ;)

I'm not a fan fan of fully articulating screens as I just want to tilt 99% of the time, and will full articulating you have to flip the screen out to tilt.
it might be time to go canon ;)
Canon's the only one of the main players that I've not had, I might have to try at some point ;)

I just want Sony to give us Bird focus Canon really seem to have that sorted .

Well if they offered black out free silent shooting at a rapid FPS it would catch my eye. But they don’t, so it’s Sony for a while longer!

I just can't get too emotional about any of this kit. I had Canons for over 10 years, Nikon for a lot longer and I've had my Kodak nearly 50 years. If any of this kit was British I might care more as I like to buy British but it isn't (although my Kodak was Made In England) so I don't see why I should care if it's a Nikon made in Vietnam or a Sony made in Thailand. Remembering Nikons / anything else of the past seems pointless to me as the stuff you buy today probably isn't made in the same factory or even the same country. It really has next to nothing to do with the kit of decades ago, IMO.

I like nice manual lenses because they're nicely made and nice to use but honestly build wise I can't say I prefer Voigtlanders over Nikons over early Rokkors. Plus any of these will drop their customers if they see fit, FD to eos and the like.

Threads gone to pot. Shame.

Post a genuine question, mostly gets ignored.

Post stuff about random other brands that don’t apply to this thread and all get involved.

People constantly trying to make a point, demonstrating that they have superior knowledge. Belittled if you try and disagree.
Don’t bother reading most of it any more sadly.

Too much Canon chat and not enough images. No wonder many stay away now :)

I rarely post on here, but have been a Sony user since the Nex days, now have the A7Riii and a few lenses, plus an XE3 because i love Fuji film sims etc
I have also owned a Z6 with a few lenses, which i really loved, but could not quite afford to own 3 systems, and also loaned an Eos R a few times, again a great camera system.
Anyway here are a few cats i met in Thailand, taken on the much maligned fe28mm f2

No fuji stuff mate. Sometimes consider getting some gear again, but would most likely be x100v only once price drops.
You can buy @Riz_Gurus when he buys the R5.
2 R5's and an R6 for backup
... and a new glass cabinet, the old one will be to old and have some dust on it.
lol :D
No new camera gear for now.... sticking with keeping money in stocks.
Although I have talked myself into upgrading the Dolby Atmos surround sound system :( :D :o lol

Hmm, autofocus lenses are going to take a bit of getting used to for me. Went to Oxford at the weekend, the amount of shots where Im not happy with the focus point is roughly 80%. I set the focus area to wide with AF-C. That obviously doesn't suit me, so I will look at maybe centre spot. How often do you guys change AF settings on a typical day out with your camera? I found it a pain changing stuff, I will obviously have to set up my camera buttons differently now I have moved over which wasn't something I had considered. It is just getting used to a new way of doing things...
It is alot quicker than MF, though my old way of either using focus magnify or more typically zone focus means I need to learn to think about things in a different way. Having said that, the 16-35 F4 is a nice lens, I will admit to being completely lost when I first put it on and went to 16mm, everything is so far away :) Im going to find this challenging, it is a completely different way to take photo's, both the FOV and the AF..
16mm is so wide!

Not suprised, the cameras not going to know what you want to focus on when its set to wide, it just detects the subject thats nearest or with most contrast. Flexible spot AF is better for this or Eye AF if you have a human shot. You can customise nearly all the buttons, but for now you could use the fn button (fast visual way to change a lot of settings) on the rear and select the different AF modes fairly quickly then use the joystick to move the AF point and trashcan to reset it to the middle again, flexible spot medium point works well. With Sony you dont really have to move out of AFC... ever.

Also others dissing others' work and not showing what they've done / can do.

That is really sad.

It's all happened before Tom. Keep popping in and one day the mood will very probably have turned.

A picture of flowers I met yesterday. A7, Voigtlander 35mm f1.4 at f5 and No.4 close up filter.

I use manual lenses a lot but occasionally try an AF lens :D When using AF I usually just have the one focus point and move it about unless I'm taking pictures of people and then I use face detect and wide area which seems to work very well.

Just for the sake of speed I tried wide area on holiday in Singapore last year but never again. Anyone looking at whole pictures normally will never know the focus point isn't where I thought it'd be but it was a disappointing experience for me and I wont be using wide area for anything other than with face detect for people again.

well if people really care to see what I have been up to I have been trying my hand at macro

my new setup, laowa 100mm, flash and homemade macro diffuser using duct tape, a ruined A4 print and a large yogurt pot :D

Talking of Sony gear.
I’ve just taken delivery of A7riii
Setting it up now. Expecting youngest Granddaughter any time. She’s not quite 2
Hopefully I’ll make good use of eye AF
Got the Tammy 28-70 mounted.

i did have the 24mm GM, but due to lockdown needed to downgrade a bit, i'll get another when things improve.

I love mine. A7RIII is just perfect!

i have an a9ii. Pretty incredible camera and the bigger grip FINALLY makes it feel like a camera is in your hand. :) Proper sized buttons and no more toy sounds in mechanical shutter.

on the fence about keeping it though.

Stop it.

The A7 is perfect and there's no need for me to buy anything else!

:D

How does it compare to the mk1

Though I might think the A7rIV would be good for the resolution when cropping, Im pretty sure if my a7r2 packed up I would probably replace it with a second hand one as I have always been impressed with it.

Agreed, I have the A7Rii and can't fault it.

My shots of the comet earlier in the thread were taken at ISO6400.

So glad I moved from M43 back to full frame.

How does it compare to the mk1

performance seem much the same.

mechanical shutter is very quiet - i think its the same as a7riv. Deeper grip and chunkier buttons makes it feel more solid.

would have liked to see the evf and especially the lcd upgraded.

nice touches with with version 2. of the firmware - the shutter closes when you turn off the camera to protect it from dust when changing lenses.
