I got very stressed today over a caring thing so Mrs WW said I should go into the garden and take some pictures, doing this was very destressing :D

My Samyang 75mm f/1.8 arrived yesterday, just packaged it up to go back. :ROFLMAO:

Maybe they will improve it with a firmware upgrade the way they did with the 45mm.

At the moment though it's not usable for anything that moves.

A.F is all over the place, really hesitant and struggles to lock on even when using it on an A9.

where did you buy from?
Also decentered? :D

WEX, I didn't even bother getting around to testing it for decentering, posting it back to them tomorrow.

It couldn't even nail anything with my daughter walking slowly towards me.

Why do you guys bother buying Samyangs?

I was hoping this one would be good I am reasonably happy with the 45mm. I quite like using an 85mm for getting ready shots at weddings but it can sometimes be a little long, I usually use my 85 f/1.8 for this as its also reasonable light weight then switch to the 85GM after the ceremony. If this had of worked well it would have been great as I would have ditched the 85 f/1.8 and still kept the G.M. It might also have been a good option for trips as its so light.

Unfortunately the a.f isn't up to it so I will just stick with what I have for now, glad I didn't go ahead and sell it before trying this first.

I couldn't be bothered testing for decentering but the a.f isn't usable for what I would use this for and the bokeh is on a par maybe even slightly worse than the 85 f/1.8

The size and weight of the lens for the focal length to be fair is great.

Because of price?

But the 75 is the same price as the excellent FE 85 1.8, cant imagine any 3rd party offering especially with Samyangs history will come anywhere near the Sony in terms of QC or AF speed, colour... or sharpness. Perhaps the only thing is bokeh. Its different with a lens like the 35mm 1.4 when the only other option was a decentered SZ that cost £1000 used back in the day.

Not at U.K prices it isn’t.

The Sony is £539, the Samyang is £379.

For me it wasn’t a price thing anyway, if it had of been any good it would have suited me better.

Its smaller too and slightly different focal length.
It will be eventually cheaper the FE85/1.8 and also if you compare new UK prices its cheaper.

Even if you compare grey prices its half price.

Ah, I see, didnt realise it was so cheap grey... probably why its a bit meh, could have rubbish AF motor/s.

no idea, waiting to place my order from LCE.
They do improve things with fw updates but that's another £50

I played with my Nippon Kogaku 50mm f1.4 today and here's a little review.

It's wonderfully built and feels like it'll outlast mankind. To me everything works the wrong way and it always catches me out every time but I'm sure Nikon users will be fine.

There's pretty epic vignetting at f1.4 but it's within the range of CS5 to correct and lessons at f2 and again at f2.8 and by f4 it's gone.

At f1.4 it lacks contrast and is just about overwhelmed by all the extreme funkiness you might expect from an old funky lens at f1.4 but it could well be ok depending on the scene and lighting, just don't expect miracles or look too closely. Things improve slightly at f2 and at f2.8 it's pretty good. Ditto the bokeh. I think it's acceptably sharp at f1.4 in the central area for people pictures but the corners can look messy. I have few complaints at f2.8 and from then on it's fine. There are newer and better old f1.4's but it still has its charms, mainly the build and handling.

Anyway, when I came in Mrs WW was making me a smoothy :D

It was lovely :D

I think I prefer the earlier 50mm f2. It's smaller and lighter but of the same build quality.

Bless her, she treats her little woofy well. A nice natural pic.

Classic Kellogg’s bowl (y) We used to have a full set of these, if memory serves me right you could collect them when you bought petrol. It’s a shame you stopped getting rewards for buying petrol, as a kid my dad brought home some cool stuff after filling up with fuel.

We had a full set but "somebody," and it aint me, keeps breaking things. She broke a mug I've had since I was 21 last week.

I have several sets of petrol stuff as at one point I was doing 75k miles a year.

That’s a shame. I don’t know what happened to ours, my mum will likely have sold them at a coffee morning like she did my Mr Men books

I remember getting toy cars from the petroleum station, you got 1 for every £6 of fuel I think. I also got a Casio calculator watch, who’d have thought then that they’d become iconic  :$

Yeah, I still have two cars, a Mini and a Lotus Elan SE. At the time I had a Lotus Elan SE but mine was red and the one I got at the petrol station is blue. I did 118k miles in that Lotus.

Mrs WW breaks stuff as she still hasn't grasped the concept of thermal shock. She takes things from the oven or things that have been filled with boiling water and puts them straight under the cold tap and she's then so surprised when they explode.

My Elan. Taken with my Nikon SLR. It's a bit soft as it was scanned at work for me by someone with a crappy document scanner. That was the fastest A-B car I've ever had.

That car was Lots Of Trouble. The gear linkage cables kept snapping and I'd lose two forward gears and reverse. That was a PITA, dunno how many times that happened. They brought out a mod that cured it but by that time the car had started to disintegrate. The dashboard mountings crumbled away and the whole thing flapped about, the window mountings crumbled and the windows bowed out at speed and of course in the rain water poured in. There was lots of other annoying stuff too. Oh, and the headlights and the pop up mechanism was a pain. It was more reliable than the Elise that replaced it though. Something went bang or fell off that car every time I took it out.

Am looking for a 35mm lens and have come across the Sigma 35mm 1.4 Art DG HSM.

Does anyone have any thoughts on this lens or have any other recommendations?

Slightly prefer the FE35/1.8 for the size, ergonomics and sightly better AF.
If you can get over those then sigma is a better lens optically.

I have both the Sigma 35mm f/1.4 Art and the Sony 35 f/1.8.

Like @nandbytes I prefer Sony 35 f/1.8 and for similar reasons, it is much lighter weight and the a.f speed is faster, it also focuses quite close which I find useful, the down side is that the out of focus areas can be ugly.

There is also the Zeiss but it is well known for having issues with decentering, I also preferred the rendering of the Sigma to the Distagon.

There is no perfect e-mount 35mm although the f/1.2 version of the Sigma Art comes close. It has faster a.f than the f/1.4 version but is the size of a house and weighs a ton.

Amazon Spain selling the new 20/1.8G for ~£780.
Very tempting but its not in stock atm and not sure how long it'll take to come in stock. They say they won't take the payment till its shipped though.

https://www.amazon.es/gp/product/B0854Y5YWH/

It's a nice lens.

I've read more than one review which uses words to the effect of "almost perfect optic" and I agree. There was a review linked on the rumor site the other day...

https://sonyalpha.blog/2020/05/03/sony-20mm-f1-8-g/

I'd honestly have been happy if it was only a smidgen better than the Sigma 20mm f1.8 but it's in a different class to that lens.

:D
