The Amazing Sony A1/A7/A9/APS-C & Anything else welcome Mega Thread!

A9, 70-200 GM, and 200-600 G on the way and I can't wait to get to grips with the Sony system. (Nikon till now). Couple of questions re accessories and other recommendations. What are your must-haves/must-do's with your A9, and can anyone recommend decent 3rd party batteries? Thanks for any suggestions.

you should buy the flash I have in sales ;)

You have just spent at least £5K on pro-level camera gear you want to skimp on batteries? Just get the original for a little extra and for peace of mind. You will only really need 1 extra battery, they last fairly long.

I would avoid the third party batteries, they are a pain. Every time you turn on the camera they fire up a warning message. I have tried a few of them and they all seem to do it. I did get a couple of new revision Rav Power batteries that were supposed to not fire up the warning message but after a firmware update they now do it as well. They also don't last as long as the real deal either.

The Sony batteries are expensive for a camera battery, but to be fair they are a very good battery.

I can't really think of any accesories that would be must have's that I haven't bought for other cemeras, the usual things like a screen protector, sensor swabs etc. I do have a cheap half leather case from eBay on all of my cameras which helps with the grip a little bit and protects the bottom of the camera when it gets set down on a rough service, I quite like those.

I'm a look after the pennies kinda guy, so have always skimped on batts. And I'll definitely need more than two, unless you think they'll cover 8K shots, the most I've taken on one day (mass participation event).

I have 20 odd batteries, I binned all the third party ones as the warning message did my head in.

Jessops often run promo codes for batteries the code is usually BATTERY10. My local Wex only charges me £50 a pop for mine because I am probably there best customer. :ROFLMAO:

You can charge on the fly with any usb power bricks, I use a 20100 Anker branded one so you may not need as many as you think.

Thanks for that. Sounding like 3rd parties not so great for Sony cameras then. Didn't have any probs with the Nikon ones. Oh well, will have more funds soon as I clear the Nikon gear.

Nice. That's very useful.

I always used third party batteries with my Nikon's as well and never had any issues. With third party Sony batteries I had a few fail when charging as well as the error message, the Sony is a big battery and I think the production costs are probably much higher than for a normal lower power camera battery. The third party batteries usually give about 50%-75% power of the originals.

Do any of you guys use the Sony grip? Or a 3rd party one? Thoughts?

I have two of the Sony grips, I used to have 4 as 2 came free with cameras I bought but I flogged the other 2 a while back, they are expensive for what they are, I dinlt think think they were particularly good build quality compared to the Nikon grips I had before. Not sure how they compare to the third party options.

One thing I would say is that I don't use them at all. I always used a grip with my Nikons, possibly because the lenses are smaller I donlt feeel the need to use them. I haven't even used them with my 200-600.

I've been using a D4 so the size difference IS something I'm sure to find difficult at first. Plus I do need to move between landscape and portrait quickly and often, so can't imagine being able to do without two sets of dials/buttons.

the mieke ones are pretty good for about £80. pretty similar to the sony - which should feel premium for the money but doesn't.

I thought the same when I first switched over hence buying the grips, before that as well as D750's and D850's I had a D4s.

You can buy one of mine if you want I will never use it.

Yes, might do that. What have you got? Can list over the FS forum.

I have two of the Sony grips neither of them have ever been used on a camera.

If you want one I can put one up in for sale in the classifieds.

you don't want to be penny wise and pound foolish ;)
Some 3rd party batteries do work fine as mentioned above. Duracell one works fine too with Sony cameras.

I have taken 2K-3K shots on one battery on A7RIV. Perhaps you can do 6K on two. So you need two spare really for worst case or just carry a powerbank which will basically charge all your devices.

FWIW I have 2 genuine Sony batteries. 1 does around 1000-1100 shots, the other about half that.

Odd  :$ Is one much older than the other? I’ve not tested mine but they both seem to deplete at the same rate.

They came together when I bought the camera used. I remember commenting when I first got it that I expected better battery life, then switched batteries & GOT bettery battery life. Looks genuine - hologram sticker & all. Not new, not old. Iffy QC?

Perhaps, maybe email the retailer, tell them you thought it would improve after a few cycles but it still only holds 50% capacity. There were a lot of fakes with holograms initially.

Private sale 12 months ago now. It's OK - still works, but it's usually second battery *just in case*. :)

Lovely pictures and a nice camera in them too.

I can't believe how cheap those are on evil bay. Please don't post anymore pictures with it in or mention it again.

I had two rf's, Canonete and Bessa R.

PS.
Amazingly Trips are more expensive.
