The Amazing Sony A1/A7/A9/APS-C & Anything else welcome Mega Thread!

Yeah if your happy to throw £3k at a fixed lens camera, mmm if I was aiming that high I would cough up the extra £1.3k and buy a real camera like a Lecia Q2 :p lol

I bought mine for £1.7K. Plenty copies sold on camera jungle for sightly cheaper.

Q2 has a 28mm lens, it's bigger and RX1RII is mostly better in terms of both IQ and AF.
If you are after real jewellery instead of camera by all means Q2 is a good option lol :p

Lol :D
They were both on my list tbh, but went for the cheaper option for now.
If I get back into the swing of things then I’ll see ;)

"Problem is severe lack of disposable income to divert to camera gear - so it's going to be a stretch finding the cash for an A7iii (I definitely want the larger batteries) and LEA3, adding an LEA4 would be a step too far. "

Buy an LA-EA4 INSTEAD of the 3.

Since most of my other lenses are SSM (or HSM, USD), so benefit from the LEA3 over the 4, that would be a worse option - no point saving for an A7iii only to never use it's AF capability but rely on the LEA4 instead.

If Sony made a LA-EA that works with screw driven lenses, this is the first lens I'd go buy. Rendering is beautiful, it's sharp and focuses better than the GM :p

The LA-EA2 (APS-C) and LA-EA4 (FF) are both designed for Minolta's screw-driven AF lenses. I've used the AF 20mm, 500mm, DT 16-50/2.8 and Tamron 70-300 (total = £750 inc the LA).

I think lots of people use it with the Minolta legends: "beercan" and "secret handshake" lenses.

Agreed. It makes sense to have the LA-EA4 mostly if you have screw-driven lenses. I did have the Tamron USD 70-300 on the LA-EA4, but it's pointless and unnecessarily heavy.

So I've swapped to the LA-EA3 and have sold almost all of my screw-driven lenses. Would like to find a fastish UWA SSM/USD/etc...

The AF of LA-EA4 (which I used to own once upon a time) is very basic.
I used to have a whole collection of minolta lenses when I shot a-mount.

CZ 16-35 f/2.8 ?

Good points. I'll look up that CZ to find out more. I normally check Kurt Munger's site and Ken Rockwell's for info on the Alpha-mount lenses. One thing: I haven't ever seen a used Tamron 17-28 through my regular Ebay alerts. Not many bought or are they so good that they're keepers?

FWIW, I just sold my LA-EA4 on Ebay having had to replace the mirror (due to a scratch that I cannot work out how it happened). It's not too tricky, but if you mismount it, you distort the mirror. Adding a mirror, even a translucent one, to a mirrorless camera seems a bit silly. Plus there's the extra annoyance of having two extra surfaces to attract dust and mess with your image. The LA-EA3/LA-EA1 make more sense to me.

the used market has been a bit slow recently in general

I’m off to Mexico very soon, but if we cancel we can’t claim anything back, or even postpone it without losing 100%. It’s not a cheap holiday either :(
Well Boris has just said that we should stop all non essential travel so I'm assuming my holiday is going to get cancelled :(

holiday is essential

on a separate note surprised to see you still have the samyang 24mm and 85mm. are you keeping them? thought you'd send them back

Samyang 24 is actually fine, put it down to user error with those charts. Not done anymore chart tests but real world tests are fine. It's actually a pretty sharp lens. The 85mm is going back due to the AF issues, I've bought the 85mm f1.8 FE from a certain someone on here (y)

One reason to go for the Sony is the focal length and the fact that by all accounts I've read it's a really good lens. As you'll know :D

I've never been keen on 28mm and although it's probably the most used focal length by far in the world now because of phones I can't remember the last time I used a 28mm other than a kit lens at its widest setting.

That's good to know.

I'm due to travel to Mull for 2 weeks commencing April 18th, just wondering if this will be possible now given the circumstances :(

Les
Even if there's not a full travel ban, the property owners may not want anyone staying there.
