The Amazing Sony A1/A7/A9/APS-C & Anything else welcome Mega Thread!

Yeah, but was it as well corrected as a more modern lens, and it was screw drive.

It was no worst than the current Sony "modern" lens I use. AF while screw driven was faster than the 85GM for example. And noise wasn't much more.

If Sony made a LA-EA that works with screw driven lenses, this is the first lens I'd go buy. Rendering is beautiful, it's sharp and focuses better than the GM :P

Exactly, any decently corrected, fast prime with AF is going to be fairly large.

My Sony 50 AF f1.4 in A mount is tiny: was about 25% the size & weight of the Samyang 50 f1.4 E mount and 50% the size of the Sony 50 f1.8 E mount that I had, but CA is astonishing and it suffers chroma really badly too. Beautiful bokeh, but it would be completely unacceptable for a modern lens. Size & weight seems to be the price for a well corrected and affordable lens with a big aperture.

I never use AF-S, and I love the creamy boken from the Sammy, even if the lens itself is enormous. At least it's not heavy.
I’m wondering if it’s got the latest firmware, maybe I should try it on the dock before sending it back

I think the problem with the Samyang is that it widens close to the mount, the 85mm GM seems to start to widen slightly further away from the mount looking at pics online.

Can you post a pic of your hands sometime? :D I've never seen anyone near as concerned about finger space between lens and grip!

@snerkler the design of this lens is definitely an issue in terms of rubbing fingers. Even the promo photos of the lens shows its an uncomfortable fit. I thought it would be OK for you though as the a7riv is slightly bigger than the older models.

Make sure it's the latest fw. The first one I had couldn't nail eye af on static subjects, but the one I have now seems fine.

It's not a big lens for an 85mm f1.4. The cheap build quality allows for it being quite light too.

An old selfie for you ;)

I have found a nice cheap Arctic trip at the end of April. Worth taking the risk on booking?

Our walk to the shops.

My Samyang 85mm f1.4’s arrived today and will be going back. In AF-C it works fine but in AF-S it struggles to find focus and misses 8/10 times, often by quite some margin (waits for the “I told you so” from f2.8 ;))

Plus it’s bigger than it looks online, not really ‘comfortable’ room for my fingers between the grip and lens. Think I’ll look at the Sony f1.8 instead.

I can recommend the Sony 85mm f1.8. It's sharp from wide open but there's a question mark over the bokeh which can be a bit cats eye and swirly if you have a bokeh unfriendly background. If you don't care or even like that I think you'll like the lens.

Depends if its really cheap. Otherwise would be foolish.
When I say cheap I mean half the price of a normal expedition trip because of some last minute covid cancellations. It's still rather expensive. But the issue is Norway is in shutdown and they aren't accepting foreigners at the moment :(

Tbh I think of all the sample photos I’ve looked at I’ve only seen one with ‘dubious’ bokeh, but it didn’t offend me too much ;)

Good. More chance of you being happy with the lens :D The cats eye thing, even when it's there, can actually work well for some pictures.

I'm not really seeing the offensive oof either, sure compared to a 85 1.4 it's not as good but in its class I think it renders nicely (definitely better than canikon). To my eyes the 35 1.8 is much worse.

Seems like to much risk to me. Who knows what status the country will be at then. Things could be quite different this time next week.

It's probably my favorite lens (I have the 85 f/1.4 G RS), I'd certainly agree that there is something special about the images it produces.
When I finally can afford the move to e-mount, it will be with an LEA3 so I can use my A-Mount lenses, and having to use MF with it will make life much harder :(

Get an lea4?

Problem is severe lack of disposable income to divert to camera gear - so it's going to be a stretch finding the cash for an A7iii (I definitely want the larger batteries) and LEA3, adding an LEA4 would be a step too far.

It's not what I'd call offensive, not as such, it's cats eye and a bit swirly, optical vignetting. There are lots of lenses that display this and explanations of what it is on line. You'll see it with for example specular highlights. It should be quite easy to test for if you have that sort of background available.

The only bokeh that I don't like in those is that shown in the photo of the girl sat in the woods, that's ugly.

In that case I think you'll be ok with the Sony 85mm f1.8 as I've not seen anything like that from it.

Yup no swirling bokah on my Sony 85mm so you be ok.

Hmmm they not really fat sausage fingers are they. Inahibe that on the a9 or a7riii
No, I don't have fat fingers :ROFLMAO: What's inahibe?
