The Amazing Sony A1/A7/A9/APS-C & Anything else welcome Mega Thread!

Nice to see a couple Samy lenses in the 'excellent' though, that 45 1.8 is one I might have interest in if I got a Sony body

What shutter speed and ISO are you losing out on? At ISO 12800 youre looking at around 2/3 stop difference between A7ii and A7s when downsized. Is 2/3 - 1 stop MAX at that ISO going to get your shutter speed fast enough to freeze? I doubt it, but only you will know the conditions.

This is where my resolution/exposure/DR maths is weak! I don't really understand that relationship.

I should probably experiment more before cross-grading. For now, I am disappointed at the amount of noise at relatively mid-range ISOs of (say) 3200.

Shouldn't be to hard... Just don't sell here. Wait for ebay £1 listing.

Trying to sell locally [would rather this] Usually I have no trouble but nobody is buying [anything beyond cheap lenses] atm, been eyeing the competition too, no shift.

The a7s only really stretches its legs at 6400+, check your current SS at 3200 iso, add a stop, if you think the shutter speed you're currently using plus 1 stop will freeze motion then go for it, if not, don't. The a7s is a great camera, there's definitely something about the low MP cams (also see d700 and 5d). Perhaps you'd be better off getting a lens with a faster aperture?

This is partly what Ps me off about fuji, every 5 mins there's cashback, dealer discounts, new models. It sucks for the seller. They are like the old Sony.

Yeah, doesn't help there's people selling similar gear to mine at very low prices, I can tell it's not the same condition, the sellers have bad ratings and seem to be desperation selling or aren't the most reliable - but buyers will veer toward the cheaper no matter. I'll hold. I've played enough poker to call some bluffs on the low ball haggling offers I'm getting too.

So you agree the samyang 85mm is better than 85GM and FE85/1.8?

I've seen some suggest the Viltrox 85 1.8 is better [in some ways] than the Sony 85 1.8, so I'd take much of that chart with a pinch of salt.

This is based on optics and max resolution so it probably is. In real life usage terms because of the iffy a.f on the Samyang the Sony would still be a better option for anyone that shoots professionally.

Interesting that he ranks the 45mm f1.8 so highly.
Is it really that sharp?

Yeah it’s pretty sharp in the centre, it’s a decent enough lens for the money. Where it struggles is a.f reliability and speed especially in low light, but you could say that about all the Samyang a.f lenses. I got the hold of a dock and updated to the V3 firmware which seems to have improved the a.f a bit. In my opinion it’s probably there best a.f lens so far but in terms of a.f performance it’s miles behind the likes of the Sony 55.

I still need to shift my current gear, I'd be pauper level in this thread like

There's nothing wrong with pauper level photography. Just think of the inverse snobbery you could wield with a cheap body and a £15 45 year old lens mounted via a £10 adapter.

I know you know this :D

We're a dying breed, everyone seems to have gazillions these days!

A gentleman or lady doesn't do "show." In fact adequate kit preferably bought used or handed down through the generations is preferable to something new and possibly SOTA.

I have the least expensive of each lens:

Least expensive Ultra-wide: Samyang 14mm f/2.8
Least expensive Super Telephoto: Sigma 150-600
Least expensive standard zoom 2.8: Tamron 28-75
Least expensive 200mm f/2.8: Canon 200mm f/2.8L

Well this is how I justify things in my head :ROFLMAO:

I'll go along with that, I'm happy with whatever I can get me mitts on tbh. Feel lucky to have what I got - always put family/bills/health/insurance/housey stuff first ... I buy gear with saved leftovers and I'll get best I can with ;) But don't stop me haggling about for best I can get with those beans

I just can't afford to splash around in the fast-FE lens pool.

So pauper me has more and more A-mount: 20, 16-50 DT, 55-200 DT, 70-300, 500.

I might, just might, try one of the new Tamron FE primes.

I can't get over the UK pricing on these, not sure who they think they're kidding at £399. The grey import pricing is much more comfortable.

I don't have time for photography at the moment but today while waiting for someone I took pictures with my Nippon Kogaku 50mm f2 and 35mm f2.8 and Minolta Rokkor 35mm f2.8 and 55mm f1.7 MC's. All of those are cheap lenses and any of them could be someones only lens, if they're a prime sort of person and don't mind MF/zone/hyperfocal picture taking.

Unfortunately being a UK outlet comes with additional costs. I doubt any UK outlet is fleecing anyone and walking away with sack fulls of cash. It's the expensive price of doing business being passed on.

That's as maybe, but I can't see them being very successful at £400 for f/2.8 third party primes.

If we're just talking in terms of performance it seems a little suspect the Batis 40mm is pegged a level beneath the Samyang 45mm.

And if dxo is to be believed the 85GM, FE55 and FE90 are still their top three Sony lens (of course they haven't tested the recent lenses). FE90 is the only lens that resolves all 42mp on A7RII. So I find it surprising that he puts them lower the list.

DXO is completely out of date those tests where some years ago. This guide is for the A7RIV, the guy who did the tests said that on the 24 mp bodies the average lenses would be good too excellent.

Real world usage instead of scientific canned benchmarks mate
