The Amazing Sony A1/A7/A9/APS-C & Anything else welcome Mega Thread!

I had an A6400 an a.f performance is very good, real time a.f isn't as good as the A9 but it is very good.
To be honest I’m not really expecting the A6400 too be as good as the A9 as there is quite a gulf in price. I’m quite tempted to pick up an A6400 soon. The prices look quite good and its probably possible to keep that as a second body. Getting an A9 would mean the A7R3 would likely need to go as that would just be too much equipment for a hobby.

Sounds well implemented. I hope Nikon can do something similar with a firmware update.
So far it seems to be well implemented. I quite like the ability to customise so many buttons on a sony camera. It does mean I havent yet found the perfect layout and keep changing buttons which makes learning where everything is quite hard. It also makes picking up a sony camera at an event like the photography show near impossible to use!

Great example, when shooting RAW you can make any manufacturer look pretty much like any other and vice versa. The only reason I prefer Nikon to Sony when either using my own images, or with the likes of the A7R3 when I was looking, sample raws is that I had to work hard to get a preset to get the Sonys how I liked, whereas the Nikons were to my taste SOOC. Obviously personal and YMMV (y)
Ive never understood the colour science part, probably because I always shoot in RAW and edit in Lightroom.

On another note I know there are quite a few complaints about sony menus. It was something I worried about when I got the A7R3 but once i had set up the personal menu, FN menu and my custom buttons I havent had a need to delve into the main menu again. Am I right in thinking sony improved the menus from the mk3 generation models (ie A9, A73, A7r3 onwards) so I probably missed the worst menus.

I know from my nikon days that any new nikon camera always felt familiar because the menu and button layout flowed through the models. I could pick up any of them and feel at home. I guess having the ability to customise the buttons partly takes that feeling away.

I've never understood the menu panic on the internet. I've always thought having lots of options was a good thing and lets be honest if the Sony's didn't have all these options some people would complain about them being missing.

I’ve never seen people complain on the internet ;).................looks in this thread and quickly gets coat!!!! :exit:

seems to be a few interesting FE lenses coming out....

Samyang 14mm, Tamron 17-30 and Tamron 20,24 & 35mm primes.

Was thinking of a Z6 but these are very interesting lenses...

Another Samyang 14mm? There's already two

Tamron 17-28mm has been available for a while. The 18mm f2.8 is also available from some sellers.

I'm back in sintra Portugal from 6 years ago I was here shooting with a 5d3 and back then most tourists had dlsr of a canikon. Now I see people with mostly Sony's
Tbh you tend to see more of what you have. It’s like when you buy a car all of a sudden you see a million and one of the same model on the road ;)

I travelled a lot for business and pleasure the last 12 months and while seeing more mirrorless than previously i still see more dslr's than mirrorless. And certainly not more Sony's.

I am starting to see a lot more Sony stuff at weddings.

Couple of A7 something or others at yesterday’s for example.

I would say it's about 50/50 in my experience for mirrorless vs. DSLRs. But you have to remember DSLR is largely split between canon and Nikon while mirrorless is split between lot more brands.

I am yet to see someone is in wild with a canon mirrorless and Panasonic FF. Have seen a few Nikon Zs though.
Most others I have seen with Sony, EOS M, Fuji and Olympus. Very few Panasonic m43 too.
A fair number of RX series cameras too.

I travel between London and Cambridge during the week. Both Cambridge station and kings cross have a quite a number of tourists.

No wonder he was looking tired, carrying that antique up the steps.

During my last holiday in Singapore we saw very few cameras. I saw a few guys with DSLR's usually with what looked like a kit lens and one lady with one with a big fat lens with a red ring (I saw her at a couple of locations actually,) one absolute babe with a Fuji mini slr style, one guy with a Sony A5xxx or A6xxx of some sort swapping lenses and one guy with a Leica M around his neck and that was about it but of course there was about a zillion people using phones.

Quick question about the A7Rii - for landscape and travel (no video) is it worth spending the extra on the A73 ?

The advantage on the A73 is the AF & dual cards.
The advantage of the A7Rii is the larger sensor, more resolution.

For personal travel and landscapes, I would lean on the A7Rii. These are not AF demanding and perhaps if you lose some photos, no one is going to sue you.

Thanks for replying :)

What about the A7ii - thats got an older sensor ?

I went through this a bit earlier in the year before choosing an A7III. The RII seems like a good buy for the purposes you describe, and I was very tempted but chose the A7III for IBIS, better battery life and better AF because we now have grandchildren. I'd probably pick the original A7 over the II because they are now dead cheap and a bit smaller (I really liked the size & handling of the used one I tried).

agreed, the ii wasn’t a decent upgrade at the time for the extra £ imo, although if you can get one for a little more it’s worthwhile.

A7III is worth the extra unless you really would like the 42mp.

But A7RIII isn't that much more than A7iii if you are buying used.
Can be had for slightly over £1400 at camera jungle at the moment with the 20% off.

I've just given in and ordered the Viltrox 85 f1.8 - £320 through Amazon.

Been juggling between that, the Samyang 85 f1.4 - £479 grey - and the Sony 85 f1.8 - £375 grey (and a real bargain).

Several factors made it hard, but this was the easiest choice: if I don't like lens performance I can return it to Amazon without any trouble. The Sammy f1.4 is really tempting at only £160 more, and is probably really the lens I want, but that's a grey version. The Sony f1.8 got rejected even though it has possibly the best AF and lowest weight of all the 85s because I just don't think it renders that well - spent some time looking through Flickr, and it was hard to find images where I liked the lens performance in terms of bokeh and subject isolation. If the 35 renders like that as some have suggested then I can see why some don't like it.

It should arrive Monday - I'll report on performance & whether I'm keeping it or not some time over the next week or 2. We're off to India for a wedding in December, and I want to be comfy using it by then.

A7 at Camera Jungle are about £400
A7II are about £560
Cheapest A7rii I have seen is about £1000 and A7iii £1280....
Obviously the cheaper the body the more I can spend on lenses.

Camera jungle currently have 20% off using a code found on their main page.

What lenses are you thinking of? What kind of budget are you working with as people on here could probably help advise a camera and lenses kit.

I moved over from Nikon to Sony last December. I first got the A7R3 used off here and picked up the 24-105 and 70-200 f4 when I traded in one of my Nikon long lenses that I had been trying to sell for a while. At the time I was willing to carry on with those lenses until I could afford to replace my long wildlife lens with a 100-400 (I wanted to find an excellent condition used copy). I was quite lucky that the otters I was photographing came so close a 70-200 didn’t seem limiting.

In hindsight I could probably got away with only the 24-105 and 100-400 as they cover all my focal length needs for wildlife and landscapes. I picked up a used 100-400 about a month later. It was faster than I thought it would be as they were quite rare at the time (this was before the 200-600 was released). The only reason I went with these was I was trying to replace what I had on Nikon (24-120 f4, 70-200 f4 & 200/400 f4/300f2.8). I wasn’t thinking about the fact I dropping down in kit size or weight so probably didn’t need all three. I had considered primes but I’m not a prime person as I would always be changing lenses trying different focal lengths! Buying the 70-200 f4 wasn’t a mistake as such because it has its uses for landscapes as a lightweight telephoto lens but I probably don’t really need it as I don’t do landscapes that often. when I do I could carry the 100-400 if I thought I would need something a bit longer. It’s been in the for sale section for a bit of time but no takers so far. If I sell it great, if not then it’s still very useable for what I do. Part of plan moving to Sony was to reduce kit and weight so one camera two lenses would work very well with that idea.

What I’m trying to say is will you need every lens you are planning on getting straight away or could you build up the lenses later? I’ve been very happy with the A7r3, so far I’ve not seen any issues with anything I do for wildlife and landscapes (apart from being limited to f5.6 but that would have happened if I ended up getting a Nikon 80-400 instead as I was always planning on dropping the fast heavy wildlife long lens). I can see your point that you may not need the better AF of the mk3 series. A friend of mine was in the same position (does mainly landscapes) so at the time went with the A7r2. He still seems happy with that chance.

I like :D I don't think it's ott editing. It's not as if he's recording images for Panorama or News at 10 he's being creative so as far as I can see anything goes. He must spend a bit of time processing though if only cloning out strings.

Lovely tones
Love these type of autumnal shots of woods. I can never get the right myself.

We've been to these woods many times and there's still more to see!! I wish now I could've been bothered to set the tripod up and shot at a smaller aperture but there's always another time I guess.....

I do seem to constantly shoot at 40mm though.
