The Amazing Sony A1/A7/A9/APS-C & Anything else welcome Mega Thread!

I have not had any problems with the AF on mine not engaging, it has worked flawlessly since I updated a few days ago....and I have to say it has improved a lot.
I have not tried it with football but the tracking expand flexible spot is great, I have tried with birds in flight, dogs running and jumping, people, bikes, cars. motorbikes...... and I did not get a shot out of focus at all, it it glues to whatever you lock it on and sticks to it like mad.
Yea for those scenarios it should be great but for field sports with teams wearing same Jersey it's tricky sometimes

Took the kids for a walk just before the heavens opened. Seems Amelia is in the stage of not smiling for the camera. Instead I get a selection of stupid faces and have to hope for the best:

Lovely images and processing. 85mm lens?

Not bad, but it's not a 85 1.4 GM... just kidding nice images

P.s. add you exif data to flickr :D

I know everyone is a bit different, but what would people class as a decent all round walk about lens that is small and light?

The A9 is gone but I might either get an A7 with 28-70 or an A73 on loan for a bit - I have the 28mm F2 for sale but not sure this is verstile enough as a walk around lens. Although never really tried it as a general purpose walk about!

The majority of the A9 fund is now put to one side but the sale of the 28mm + maybe £100ish could be available for a lens so we are talking around the £350-400 mark.

If you can find a cheap 24-70 f4 zeiss it's not a bad option.

In that price range you might be able to pick up an adaptor and a Canon 24-105. Have no ides how good or bad that combo would be though. Maybe you could stretch your budget to a Tamron 28-75.

The normal kit lens will let you take photos and it's sharp enough but wouldn't be something I would be happy with for any period of time.

Maybe you would be better of with a crop sensor camera and a couple of the cheap Sigma primes until your in a position to look at upgrading again.

I’ve had the kit lens in the past as it was fine for what it worth no issue. I love my 24-70 f4 can’t go wrong with it really

£416 would get you the 24-70 f4 at Camera Jungle at the moment.

Depends where you're walking about, for a lot of street photography a 35 or 50mm prime does the job nicely. I would prefer a couple cheap primes over a zoom, you'll get the faster aperture and 2 small primes is very often lighter than one zoom too

Me to, I would much rather have a crop sensor camera and a couple of half decent primes than an old A7 full frame and a not so good zoom lens.

Same here. But, if you want to run and gun sometimes having to often change primes can be a bit of a pain.

Anyone had any experience with property photography using the Samyang 14mm? I see a lot of reviews for astro (something I want to do more of) but I want to find a replacement for my Tokina 11-16mm, something I used all the time for architecture, and this seems like the best option for the price?

I'm in a bit of a pickle as I have just over £100 in Amazon vouchers and just over £100 in the sale of one of my Nikon lenses so any purchase i make has to be through Amazon!

The distortion is horrendous, not really a lens I'd suggest for architecture where straight lines are more important.
What is your budget? If your can afford it the voigtlander 15mm is a great small lens with almost no distortion. The Laowa 15mm also seems decent of your want a faster option.

If you are on a tight budget then I'd go with Sony or Fuji APS-C. Something like A6000+sigma primes or x-t2/20+18-55 would make a nice combo.
If you must have FF then Zeiss 24-70mm f4 is pretty much only option if you want a bit of range or keep your 28mm and add a 50mm F1.8

How can I use my smart phone to remotely trigger the A9 and keep the raws on the camera?

Using imaging edge mobile.

Figured out I needed to take it off continuous shoot and put it into single shot for a start. Doesn't have a touch AF option though which is annoying

Bit late to the party, but I picked up a new A7Rii at the photography show, added a 35 2.8 Sony/Zeiss lens and the Sigma/Canon lens converter and have been really enjoying it. So far I've found the Canon 85/1.8 and 70-200/4 play very nicely on the adapter, and both balance well on the camera. Would the "native" Sony 85/1.8 be better in any way or should I stick with the Canon? Tempted to pick up JJ's 28/2 as well :)

With A7RII you don't get eye AF or full AF-C features with mc-11 which you would do with the native Sony.
Also Sony is sharper.

Thanks for this, I think both of those options are going to be out of my price range unfortunately though!

Did you lose all custom settings after the update?

Yeah, it's basically a camera reset so you have to set it up all again.

AF is more sticky. Sadly it didn't improve performance of adapted lenses, but that was just wishful thinking on my part :D

I thought for a horrible moment they had removed the ability to assign the eye AF to the AEL button, but it was just me missing the setting!

What didn't you like about the Qumox? I bought one for limited use and it seemed fine, nothing jumped out as being cheap and nasty at least.

Have just received the neewer too and it's similar. Just generally feels pretty cheap and plasticy compared to nikon and fuji ones I've used before. the focus joystick isn't very nice to use either. I guess it's something to get used to.

It is different for sure, but I was reasonably happy with the quality. I picked mine up with two batteries and a dual charger for £84 which I didn't think was to bad a deal.

The batteries been OK after fw updates?

Really - the Sony 85/1.8 is sharper than the Canon 85/1.8? If so it's a no-brainer for me. I'm hoping (!) to keep the kit weight down as the point of the Sony for me is a lighter-weight system over the Canon, so a set of small primes is what I expect to use. The Sony 85/1.8 fits well with that plan where the 1.4 version doesn't. The Zeiss Batis 85/1.8 was the other lens I was looking at, but according to the reviews I've seen it's double the price for no improvement over the Sony.

The Sony 85 1.8 is a treat. The AF is super quick, and it’s ridiculously sharp. The photos I posted last were with that lens.

I've had both. Get the FE.

yep really :)
Its also sharper than the EF 100mm f2 I used to own and replaced with FE85/1.8. (I still prefer EF 100mm f2 because of focal length but native AF is better so I got sony)
The sharpness and rending is pretty much the same between Sony and batis. Batis has OSS and is larger.

Does it have to autofocus? I'd suggest a used Sigma 12-24 (rectilinear, so little distortion, and super-wide) in non-Sony mount with an adapter. I have one, and it's one of 4 Nikon mount lenses that I don't want to move on yet.
