The Amazing Sony A1/A7/A9/APS-C & Anything else welcome Mega Thread!

OK, 24-105 turned up today. Seems sharp enough, but corners are a little bit smeary, even at f11. I need to test it properly, but managed a few images at lunmch and tonight after work.

First impressions are good - build is nice & solid, if a bit heavy, but it doesn't have any wobbles or zoom creep. Focus is fast & silent & this lens responds well using C-AF (useful when doing hand-held closeup). Bokeh is very usable, colours are crisp and neutral, contrast is good & is also pretty much constant at every aperture (possibly first lens I ever owned for which that's true). I think there may be a touch of decentering, so need to test it properly over the next few days. Image stabilisation is a bit disappointing, with images apparently only a little better than I'd get with D610 at a similar aperture & shutter speed for longer (say 1/5 to 1/4 shutter speeds) handheld.

Just seeen I've got my first dust bunny too! :p

After all the talk of dusty sensors, and largely getting away with it, had to clean a mucky one yesterday. Only noticed due to a rare deviation away from the usual apertures.

Been out most of today testing a Panasonic S1R, quite an incredible camera probably the best evf I have ever seen.

Beast of a thing though weight wise.

how is the AF? especially AF-C?

It's okay, I am reluctant to say it's not good as I only had the kit lens and it might be better with better glass. It didn't track well and was a bit hesitant. It definitely wasn't Sony good.

Image quality is superb though and the ergonomics are perfect although it's old school dslr big.

The evf is outstanding.

well the kit lens isn't exactly bad glass, sony is very good with its 24-105mm in terms of AF.

It certainly has the best EVF. The size is off-putting for likes of me. Others may like it but I don't think it'll sell (just like samsung NX1)

Hopefully Sony will get that evf with the next gen.

Yeah it's absolutely huge and heavy, I actually really liked it but it wouldn't make any sense to switch at the moment for me and to be honest I am not sure I could afford the cost to change. :)

I think it might be attractive for someone coming from say a D850 though.

they're more likely to go down Z route. The sensor doesn't seem as good as the D850s (basing this on the test results of lieca Q2 which seems to have the same sensor)

You found the same as me, a lot of people have said how sharp it is but I was a little disappointed, edges and corners are not sharp and I would describe the same as you 'smeary'.

Yes, possibly. Although many will still avoid the Z due to the one card slot and the iffy a.f.

1 card does t bother me. Af suppose be improved in next firmware

The S1R is aimed at professionals, not amateurs and they will care about only one card slot in a lot of cases.

Then again is Panasonic's AF any better?

Tough one to call, Nikon's will possibly be better when the new firmware update hits. At the moment I would say the Panasonic is probably slightly better, thats just my opinion though.

That evf is from Sony lol

I'm not too bothered about the quality of evf's. I'd rather have a back screen you could see in daylight than a better evf. Was out with my A7 and 55mm earlier and the back screen was completely and utterly useless for low angle shots, I couldn't see a thing.

And does the Nikon do a better job?

I have no idea. I've never seen the Nikon let alone tried one.

:D

I took a few pics using 24-105 with rear screen in the bright sun this morning and I could see enough to compose - not completely ideal, but not useless either.

Meaning they can easily use it if they wish.

They can easily choose to keep using their current EVFs too, I don't think they will (maybe the the R3 EVF becomes the new low end) but my point was it doesn't matter that they can make a better EVF only what they eventually turn into a product we can buy.

Well the evf is a product u can buy cis the Panasonic body

There is the sunny weather option on the monitor brightness, certainly on the A7iii. I’m still having issues when using evf outdoor and the grey focus box. Really need to sort that out with a firmware update.

Made a visit to my local camera store on Friday.
From what I was told, Sony is still selling way above both the new Nikon & Canon offerings, the cash back and discounts on both Nikon & Canon offerings is due to slow sales. :o

I was in my local WEX yesterday and they said pretty much the same thing.

I had called in to trade in some of my old Nikon kit that I hadn't been able to part with yet. Went in with the intention of definitely not exchanging for another Sony camera as it was just for personal use and I wanted to try something different. Tried out all of the newer cameras Fuji, Canon, Nikon, ended up coming home with another A7III.

WEX are really decent for trade ins by the way. I tried selling some of the stuff I traded in privately and had no interest. They gave me more as a trade in than I was trying to sell them for. :ROFLMAO: Then after a bit of haggling I ended up getting a lot more than I expected.

They actually gave me more allowance on a Sigma 50mm Art than I had paid for it used originally over 2 years ago.

I ended up just over £50 better off than I would have done selling at the prices I tried to sell for privately and buying grey import from efinity and they had an offer with a free extra years warranty on the camera as well. :giggle:

Only problem is that I was supposed to be going into to buy a cheaper camera that I didn't have to worry about when on family holidays etc. so I will still probably have to end up buying something else. :$

I'd be tempted to think that slow sales were due to the time of year and people waiting to see what happens with Brexit and the economy and that sort of stuff but if the Sony stuff is still selling... then maybe people are seeing the Canon and Nikon mirrorless as a bit limp and waiting for 2nd generation products.

I may be wrong but I'd assume that the new Panasonic FF mirrorless isn't going to be flying off the shelves either.

On the Tuesday of the photography show me and a mate popped out to subway for a quick bite and we were sitting there looking through some shots on the back of my A73, when a couple of guys with lumix t shirts on (obviously from their stand at the show) sat down at the next table and planted down one of the new mirrorless cameras. Didn't leave much room on the table to put their 6 inchers! Anyhow, one of them looked over and said that we should put the toy away and invest in a "real" camera!.... Tossers.

should have replied with size doesn't matter, its how you use it

Funnily enough, we did have a fleeting look at it about an hour beforehand and commented that it was a heavy brick.... And told the blokes so.

I must confess though that the evf and screen were superb.

Sony has momentum, releasing a new product doesn't mean everyone jumps ship immediately, it takes times and all those years of Sony pumping out new cameras, new lenses etc is being rewarded now.

Even if you completely discount what restricted updates has done to Canon's reputation they have big holes in their RF line up, if you need more than a 5D4 what do you do? Who wants to invest into an expensive DSLR if that means you either can't use their newer RF lenses or that you'll have to upgrade again?

Nice one man. MPB offers have nose dived abit ! Will keep wex in mind

I’ve found when uploading images to FB using Lr cc on iPad the images not as they should even though I’ve got max selected

I take it your mean highest quality?
That certainly ruins the pictures when uploaded online. I suggest 80% which is good enough for online sharing.

I think it FB with the issue on
Lr cc on iPad we don’t have the adjust just small or original

Not half I priced some of the stuff up with mpb as well. Even being to trade to them for cash and buying grey I was still better of trading to WEX and being retail.

Am sure that wouldn’t always be the case though. I can’t be bothered with the hassle of MPB anyway.

Think mine was quite good! Offered me £1800 for unboxed A9. I’m not even sure it’s worth my time putting it up here.
