The Amazing Sony A1/A7/A9/APS-C & Anything else welcome Mega Thread!

I will compare to my adapted Canon for speed and also IQ when I get a chance and the eye AF is not a gimmick, certainly not. People who think "oh, I can just spot focus on that"….sure you can, so can I but by the time you move the focus point and compose, I could have just press eye AF and shot about 20 frames off (if I wanted). Also the tracking in AF-C, you just hold down the Eye AF and compose it knowing it will be focus on the eye all the way.

It's a different way of shooting, a easier way of shooting, dare I say it, a better way of shooting.

Like yourself, I tend to have the AF point where I want it before I bring the camera to my eye. So I am pretty happy using a camera that way, but the eye AF does change how you use the camera completely. So far it seems to me that is just pretty much works as well (I've had some misses, but nowhere near what I'd expect from a DSLR) so it's definitely not just a pretty green box. I haven't used it in situations with multiple faces in frame yet, but for single subjects it is pretty damn awesome.

Fuji face\eye detection would've given up with a profile shot, leaving you having to change to another focus mode to get the shot. Sony hangs on in there, and I've been pleasantly surprised by that.

Ah yes, it does Eye-Af side on, which I was really surprised about. Their algorithm is something else.

Plus it'll only apply to lenses that are available in e mount already so pointless imo.

Exactly, say your moving over from Canon you'd still be cheaper just selling the glass and picking up new FE mount ones (or just buying an MC-11 depending on your AF needs).

Bought an A7ii from camera jungle this week as a backup for my r iii. "Excellent" condition - arrives, looks great, only 10k shutter. Turn it on and on the top right corner of the screen there is a faint green and blue mark to the LCD - really its only visible when its on a really dark screen, but im a bit annoyed as I dont class that as excellent. Paid £620 for it. What do you guys think - return or just deal?

Good price but if it annoys you return it.

Might be dead or hot pixel that needs remapping. Recently had one on my r3 and it went away on its own. Try setting the date and time to something in the future

If you can live with it, maybe contact them and see if you can settle on a reduced price, as it’s not the excellent condition they said, they might take it over the return

I've given them a ring, they said they couldnt offer any money back but could offer a repair (up to a month) or return ... thinking return at the moment. It does look worse in the photo than it actually is though

Update re front focussing Sony 85mm f1.8 lens....

Lens now checked and confirmed to be front focussing. Will be getting a new replacement lens when they come back in stock.
Interesting do they know what was causing it to front focus? Was considering one as my next purchase, but not looked to much in to any issues with it.

My new toys :D

Nikon 50mm f1.4...

P1020150.jpg

35mm f2.8...

P1020146.jpg

These lenses are maybe the softest I've owned wide open apart from a CCTV lens I briefly had. Although soft they're still perfectly useable and of course better stopped down. I still have to get used to the reversed compared to everything else in the world ever aperture and focus rings but other than that these are gorgeous lenses and they're so well made that I can imagine them outlasting humanity.

I'm still hovering over the add to basket button for the new 35mm f1.4 and 50mm f1.2 AIS's. Dunno whether to buy or not, I'll have to think about it some more.

PS.
I'm impressed with that cheap adapter. There's no play at all and it does make me wonder why anyone would pay the extra for a Novoflex... I'm looking at YOU Woof Woof... I have three Novoflex's and they're about £100 each whereas that evil bay special was £18.

I doubt tamron have to pay anything for it. That's the whole point of making it an open standard isn't it?

Just as I suspected.....

Posted by the guy that created the strip fix...

"The open nature of Sony's E-Mount standard" is that it is NOT open at all!

I formally applied for my research group (based in the University of Kentucky) to get the specifications and Sony eventually gave a two-part reply:

1. Basic means mechanical only -- no electronics communication protocol, etc.

2. They will only give basic info to a company making what they consider to be a worthwhile E-mount device; they considered the device I was working on (something much like what TechArt later put out as the LM-EA7) appropriate, but didn't consider a university research group manufacturing a device (with intent to spawn a company) to be a company. Thus, they refused to even disclose the mechanical specs.

Please stop congratulating Sony on their statement of open disclosure when it is really: "These BASIC SPECIFICATIONS will be disclosed to manufactures of lenses and mount adaptors following a predefined PROCESS OF APPROVAL and the signing a license agreement with Sony."

Na, thats. damaged LCD, that would be hundreds of pixels to be that big.

yeah read that and I have contacted him :)
I have also got in touch with a sony employee that i personally know to understand their meaning of 'open standard' because so far it seems BS.

Well, I can sort of understand their point... If you were Sony would you want anyone and everyone to have access to your full product specs? I can see why they'd want to have some sort of a vetting process in place. This guy may be a genuine and reputable guy and this may be the wrong decision in this case but I'd accept that Sony or anyone else could reasonable want a vetting system.

Well after a days delay the Tamron 28-75 is here!

Build seems fine to me, its no 24-70 GM but then it cost £700.... its double that even for a used GM.

AF seems snappy but not had much chance to do anything with it as I am “working from home”.

After this didn’t show yesterday I ordered an 85mm f1.8 G and 24-105 f4 G from Park Camera’s but now that next day delivery seems to have gone walkabout!
The Tamron was always my preferred option due to the cost until the stories about AF issues but not seeing anything yet, its also nicely small and light although I would have liked the extra button on the lens that Sony put on the 24-70 GM, 24-105 G and almost everything now actually....

Will probably keep this and the 85mm and decide what to add at the wide end, 16-35 f4 is tempting as is another 21mm Loxia.... keen to see if the rumoured Samyang 24mm f2.8 turns up too
As I’m very impressed with its 35mm brother!

Forget the working at home @chrism_scotland , get out and test the lens for me so that I can finally decide on whether to keep my order. :D

Having a bit of a GAS attack at the moment after our grandsons Birthday the other day. I was having little luck with eye detect in low light using the A7RII and it's making me want the A7III.
On the other hand it's a rare occasion that it would benefit me and I do really like the resolution the RII gives

Haha, I do need to nip out to the Post Office at lunchtime, I’ll take it with me....

You need some Sigma arts.

Well, just got my brand new and sparkly A7iii and the long road to learning how it works has begun, there seems to be little in the way of lens choice at the moment, im looking for a 90mm ish for portrait and macro, any advise?

Well, it just so happens that there is in fact a 90mm macro.

PS.
And it seems to get good reviews too :D

What? I think it's covered at every focal length from 12 to 400mm and 1.4 and 2 tc, where are you looking?

Another new toy pictured here with my A7...

P1020172.jpg

It's a Panasonic GX9 and it's very nice indeed although the EVF is IMO poor for a camera of this price. It's just the EVF hump smaller than my A7.

That's because it's excellent, which it should be for its price. I do have one complaint about it though, its pretty awful at AF and just can't lock focus sometimes on easy subjects.

Oh dear.

I had the 50mm f2.8 macro and sent it back as it wouldn't lock focus reliably and hunted.

The really weird part is, I find a subject it can't focus on, don't move it but turn on the magnification view and now it'll lock focus perfectly.

If not for that weird behaviour I'd describe its AF as excellent like most macros in that class.
