£3500 Sony a7iii + Lenses
So this is my budget... I've already got the camera + mc-11on order but still undecided about what lens to get.
Could do mc-11 with cheap Canon L or do budget native 50mm/85mm/ Tamron 28-75 2.8

Just looking for opinions about what you would get first??

So what is your lens budget AFTER your camera and MC11 for lenses?

Astro, Portraits - indoor & out, macro, landscapes, weddings & events

To start with, I would put the £1700 towards a used Sony FE 24-70mm f2.8 GM or the new Tamrom 28-75mm f2.8, this should meet most of your requirements for now.

Why have you ordered the mc-11? Assume you already have a canon lens you are interested in using with it? If you let us know which one then makes it easier to give a view on other lenses to buy (and whether you want to use canon or want to use Sony native lenses)

I have the Canon 50 1.4 & 24-105 f4 L mk1 / Sigma 70-200 2.8

Really tempted to just get the Sony to save money, small and has that button.

I've had all 4 of those lenses (the 85 art being canon and also had the 85mm 1.2 canon previously too)

in the end ... I kept the FE 1.8 lens.

Zeiss is nice but in terms of IQ its pretty much identical with the FE - so not worth the extra money unless you need the OSS

GM - great lens, but the AF is sloowwwwwwwwww

Sigma art - amazing, but HUGE

FE 1.8 - great price, great quality ... and nice and small :)

1.2 canon, really slow, really bad CA but has that dreamy effect you cant find anywhere else!

Very interesting findings.
How did you find the IQ comparison between the Sony 85mm f1.8 and the Sigma Art @ the f2 to f2.8 range?

I didn't go to crazy depths and owned the canon lenses before I moved to sony, so I can only go off the old raw files I took back then. The sigma lens is very impressive but its just so big - which can be an issue. I can try and dig some out to compare but it may take me a while!

I have been impressed by the sharpness of teh FE around the 2 2.8 range though, even at 1.8 it has surprised me

Use the Canon 24-105mm f/4 with the MC-11 and see how you like it, if you find it lacking in AF but an important lens then you can easily replace it with the FE 24-105mm, 28-75mm or 24-70 GM at a later date but if you're happy with how it works you've saved a good chunk of money. I'm willing to bet there will be a few used Tamron 28-75mm popping up from the crowd who expect it to be perfect.

Samyang 35mm f/2.8, Sony 55mm f/1.8 and Sony 85mm f/1.8 all spring to mind as good choices.

I'm just a photographer .. Astro, Portraits - indoor & out, macro, landscapes, weddings & events

The main bits you don't have covered are
- macro. If happy to use the mc11 I would suggest a canon fit sigma 105mm macro
- astro - something like a samyang 14mm f2.8

Then it probably leaves wedding and they depends on your style and whether professional (if this I would expect you'd know what you want) or as a hobby.

Either some fast primes or an f2.8 zoom

Thanks for that and it reaffirms what I suspect.

Save the money towards the Sigma 105 which has no alternative and if I’m going to get something regardless of size, might as well be that one.

At f2 they are all pretty equal tbh. You might find some differences at extreme corners at 200% but IMO that's equal to hardly any difference in real world use.

I fricking hate this Sony A73.

The more I use it, the more i review the images taken from it, the more it makes me despise my Canon. I really don't want to think about it but the thought that "the Canon will probably miss focus this by a fraction" keep creeping into my head.

I am just getting so many more keepers with the A73. SO MANY MORE! (much less frustration)

Yeah, it can be hard going back to using the DSLR after using mirrorless so much!

I had money in my hand when I walked into camera shop to by a new 6D mkii... And just before I handed over the cash, I realised I'd be stupid to not invest only £350 more for twice the camera.
Going through my photos and seeing what you've just said makes me so happy that I went with Sony.. Because its not IF the Canon misses focus.. It's WHEN, it's not your fault, it just is what it is

And I have two 5D4…not the AF in the 6D2.

Grant, using Dual Pixel AF to shoot, focus is very accurate but through the viewfinder, it is not, it just often has a mind of its own. I am not saying the Sony doesn't miss and there are situations where it just decides not to focus but most of the time it just misses a LOT less.

Since using the A7r2 this was my feeling too and said many years ago how even the a7r2 got more keepers then my Canon 5d3.

Mirrorless tech just makes AF more accurate and now, as fast if not faster then a dslr now.

I think the A7mk3 is the D750 sequel it seems.

Ridiculous amount of feature/performance for the price and had i not have an a7r3 or a9 i would have got it myself too.

Anyways, does anyone know when the sigma 104 f1.4 is coming out from sigma e mount?

nice one jonney, how did you find the af with the a7s and the sony glass? not tried any sony glass on mine yet and the af with the canon glass mc-11 in this sort of lighting is some what pedestrian

AF was ok, not as quick as my 5d3 but usable for static shots, Not so much for anything that moves due to it being contrast detect only

Good to see high ISO performance from the S but was the guy orange or just the usual Sony low light white balance ;0)
usual sony orange!

Don't quote me but the back if my mind has October 2018?

Plenty of time to save up for it yet, I need to spread it out between my 35/1.4 CZ (This week!)

Just a little picture of Mrs Woof Woof, I like this picture :D

A7 with Minolta Rokkor 35mm f2.8 MC.

It is IMO a lovely old cheap lens and if it and others like it would mount straight onto my A7 I'd be very happy :D

Why is Sony so adamant on stop down focussing in AF-C!? looks like A7/Riii does the same :banghead::mad:

***** On Camera Flash *****
Just curious to what people use for on camera flash, I know Sony use a different hot shoe connector so finding 3rd party isn't easy and I'm struggling to find something that isn't so massive on top of the camera.
Looking for something with HSS.

I use the Godox tt350s which works well and isn’t too big. Others use the Nissin i40

I mentioned it before, only a matter of time before you completely move to Sony and get rid of your Canon gear :D

It doesn't.its fixed on the R3 and also the latest fw for R2.

I've tested it and shoot in lowlight studio conditions and I was the first to moan about it a few years ago.

Make sure you disable live view effect off
