This is my first camera daily, I actually don't have any. I have one that holds 1 camera with 1 body which isn't so much a bag, more a cover to put inside my luggage.

This has prompted me too look into this, found a long comparison vid on YouTube, actually 1st link.


They are so close I can't tell the difference most of the time, I think the Samyang is sharper and they concluded the Samyang is the better lens and cheaper too.

Unless someone got a lemon, the FE35 is definitely sharper, quiet and faster to AF, more reliable in AF-C, dust and moisture resistant, better built and usable for video.

Don't get me wrong Samyang is definitely a great lens for the price and hits above its price but it's no FE35 :P

There are more people shooting Sony then ever.
Even when the A mount Full Frame came out, hardly any pro used Sony. I fact hardly anyone I knew on various forum's bought a full frame A mount.
They have come an long way in 10 years.. always good to look back at reviews to understand how things were..

I don't think it does.... Sony is becoming a top player in the professional photography segment.... the have done so much with the FE system since its launch of the Sony A7.
We are only on the 3rd generation of A7 series and look at where it is at with the A7 III.

I think that statement was probably partly influenced by Samsung entering the market also and dumping thier camera (not to mention they did for second time recently :P)

Quite probably. Currently the longest native prime lens is 135mm, I think. For many professionals Sony won’t be a serious consideration until that is addressed in full.

That's 3rd generation for Sony, probably as a timeline only 2 generations for Canon.
The Sony a900 came out the same time as the Canon 5D2 [emoji3]

It was because up until the a900, Sony hadn't made a serious camera.
The closest before was the a700, which wasn't as good as the Nikon d300 in almost all areas, apart from it was cheaper.

I haven't tried it in AF-C or video but for a lens that's less than half the price of the Sony I don't think there's much in it overall and certainly not for the majority of users of a 35/2.8 lens.

Oh good, we are back to 2008 again and talking about lens that most people don't own

You forgot to mention no tilt and shift

A used Sony is currently around £350. A new samyang is £280 and used around £200. So till the are more used samyang lenses and price drops I'd say Sony is worth considering.

Also I was making a general comment, you may not care for AF-C/video or better build but there'll be people who do :)

Anyways neither is for me I am looking for a Sony zeiss 35mm f1.4 :D

I didn't say that I don't care for AF-C or video, I said I haven't tried the lens with those. I agree that a used Sony is slightly closer to the price of the Samyang but as I said, for a lot of photographers who want a 35/2.8 lens (i.e. most togs earning from their kit would more likely go for the 1.4) it offers better value. Each to their own though, was just my opinion from using the lens to help others thinking about getting one, especially those that don't need the Zeiss badge.

granted the longer fast primes are specialist but many people own 300mm f4 & 300mm f2.8 glass :rolleyes:

For me it wasn't a cost decision it was more of a decision based on the size of the package. An A7 with a 35mm f2.8 Sony or Samyang is the size of a MFT or Fuji mini SLR and lens but FF. That has to be an attractive proposition :D

I'd add the 28mm f2 and 55mm f1.8 to that idea, there's three lenses to choose from depending upon your preferred FoV that would all give a small and light FF package.

My suggestion of cost is comparing the Sony FE 35/28 to the Samyang 35/28. They're both pretty much the same size and, for may people who want to shoot with a small, light package but with good results down to 2.8, the Samyang does an excellent job for less than half the price. As above, I haven't tried it with video or AF-C yet but as a still lens it performs well. Most people who want a walkabout prime won't want to bolt on the 35/1.4 but those of us who earn a living from their kit are more likely to pay the premium for the better build/performance/1.4 aperture but that's a different target market.

it's each to their own though.

Actually not that many people I have known over the years have owned a 300/2.8, the only person I know bring a Sony shooter (has the Minolta)

I think I have known more people with a 600/4, and they are all wildlife togs.

Its a mute point as there are more pros then ever with multiple systems nowadays.

FE mount is only 5 years old. I think the clever part on Sony was making the E/FE mount an open standard with restricted licensing, enabling fast focusing adapters for other non native lenses.

The arguments in 2008 with Canon fanboys were all about there were no f4 options btw.

I think the biggest argument about FE are the lens costs, but guess there are a lot of R&D costs to recoup as all the lenses are new first generation etc
 
I too dont know many who owns a 70-200 f2.8 lens let alone a 300/400 prime!

You cant even go and try these sorts of lenses in places like park camera's or jessops.

they are many wildlife and sports toggers but they dont represent the whole population of pro photographers.

So to be specific, the lenses for wildlife and sport is lacking
