What made it a bit difficult was having two videographers, and another photographer - but I am shooting second, so at least I get to experiment without too much burden of stress.

I didn't use it all night as a band was on after the dance, and so I wanted to move right around the dance floor - and it became just a bit easier and more predictable to use bounced flash.

I guess I forgot to add in my last post, and this is hard to teach and only comes from experience and it is very venue and situation dependant. What I find is OCF works best usually, or rather, it is needed the most when the walls and surrounding are black or very hard reflective. OCF than can be used to be more dramatic as there will be little ambient light hitting the surfaces, so you can either accept there is a void in the distance or fill it with a light and create a rim light between the flash to everyone and anything in between it and the camera.


For rooms with a lighter or even white surface, like a marquee, often a single on camera bounced flash is enough as fill, high enough ISO for ambient, especially if the band or DJ brought with them their own lighting to create colours.


So it depends, sometimes a single on camera flash is best and looks best, it all depends on the look you are after.

I was getting that feeling actually, but it's good to hear your thoughts.

That's why I stopped using them after a while, to stop restricting my shooting position and make more use of the ambient which was already pretty good.

I am not at home at the moment, I can show you some examples later what i mean, and also an example where I used a videographer's LED light to create a rim light for me.

I am hoping Sony make a 50mm f1.4 G Master but doubt it as the Sony Zeiss variant is already available.
Having owned both the Zeiss Batis and G Master 85mm lenses, they both offer certain advantages... for example the Batis is faster to AF being f1.8

Just to add.

I have the same 3 lens combo for my Fuji too so it's not a transition....yet?

I dunno, the acid test is using it for real.

I am still finding my feet around the focusing system, especially for selective points, I have experience some miss focus because using a M or L group shooting inanimate object sometimes it miss focus, pick the wrong point, to avoid this I need to use single point focus but for certain things a larger group is best, I need to configure the camera so I can switch between the 2 with Eye AF on a different button. C1 + C2. This is something I have to try for real.

As for the Sony 85/1.8……..I moved to the Canon 85/1.2 for the reason of bokeh……knowing me that’s where I eventually will end up having, do I just save up longer and go for it??? Probably best.

The background thing has gone grey too.

CA, when it’s bad, it’s terribly annoying. I like shooting into the light and wide open and my 85L can get bad CA to a point where the photo becomes unusable because the edges of the face and skin becomes monochrome.

CA has become the bane of my existence the last couple of years, it seems I’m getting more and more picky especially when things like focusing and sharpness and DR or noise is no longer a concern.

Yes, CA can be a pita.

I also like shooting into light, a minor concern when it comes to the Zeiss 35.

You'd think zeiss of all brands would try controlling this aspect of the lens well but they are some of the worst offenders

I think the problem is when you correct a lot you lose some character. Difficult to balance.

sure and the zeiss 35mm renders very nicely too, I prefer it to every other 35mm. But there will be the odd situation where someone manages to wear a dress that's the exact purple of the CA. So it makes it impossible to correct in post.

I am very used to Sony fans on forum saying "oh CA is no problem I can fix it with a single click in LR" :D

Other than the IQ, the lens looks amazing and build quality is fantastic..... I dont like that it has a Sony lens cap, wouldve been nice if it was a Zeiss cap like the Loxia has... its functional but still.

I have a spare Nikon 72mm cap….I thought about putting that on my 50CZ...
