The Amazing Sony A1/A7/A9/APS-C & Anything else welcome Mega Thread!

Getting a FF camera and not having fast glass….sounds counterintuitive !

Not true at all. There are still benefits like increased dynamic range, faster AF-ing lenses, better ergonomics, EVF, wider UWA etc.

Also f1.8-2 is plenty fast for me. It is absolutely possible to make some decectly sized f2.8 zooms also (eg: 16-35/28-75) which don't exist on APS-C.

I was talking about your main reason, I wasn’t talking about the rest that you tagged in afterwards.

As for DR, that’s not a mirrorless feature, it’s just a Sony sensor capability of their latest generations of sensors. The D850 is still king as far as DXO Mark goes.

Faster AF lenses, that’s not a mirrorless feature, that’s just fast focus lenses...any lenses.

Ergonomics...unlikely, otherwise the pinky grip would not exist. It’s existence is proof that Sony mirrorless is not perfect in ergonomics.

EVF, sure. I’d give you that.

Wider UWA? Eh? Canon make a 11-24mm FF zoom. Are you referring to APSC bodies only?

Ergonomically, I’ve had no issues with the A7 body. Sure, if the camera was bigger the grip would also be. But part of going mirrorless for many people is a reduction in size - so surely having a body and associated grips as big and heavy as a DSLR is counter intuitive? If you want a big body with big, comfortable grips.. buy a 1D X, or whatever.

I’m glad the Sony is no bigger than it is - stuff like a battery grip or a pinky extension is for the people that need it, not for the masses. Best that way, imo.

Pinky grip is hilarious!

You dont have to go to a 1dx for a comfortable camera (imo its much to big unless you're shooting very long teles), the D750 isnt a hell of a lot bigger than a A9 and its very comfortable with a deep grip for most lenses.

The A7rii onwards is a huge improvement from the original.

It’s funny coz it’s true. You can imagine the engineers having the exact same problem and they made a product to solve it. It’s a big enough problem for them to actually make it into production.

Its so annoying because the camera rests really awkwardly, WTH did they not make it the same height all across the base, kinda like a short battery grip.

For those that haven't seen it....

Mirrorless aps-c or m4/3 maybe, but mirrorless FF isn't a big size saver as FF lens size is what it is.

I haven’t used an A9, so couldn’t comment - as far as those who have, do any of you guys find it uncomfortable? I was pretty much talking about the current A7 series - which is quite a bit smaller than a d750, say.

Indeed, lenses will always be big and heavy. I’m just talking about how comfortable they are, really! :)

Same but it's not quite as comfortable as my last camera (haven't tried it with a grip), I rarely ever use a large lens so it's fine but I doubt it improves the experience any.

In the long run, I hope they give us some more slow primes (like 35mm f/2.8) or good small zooms, then I get the best of both worlds.

Thats what I meant though, the newer cams are much more comfy, the original A7 wasn't great, the grip was very shallow. Yes 17mm = no dangling pinkie or additional grip..... same size lenses (besides the very wide stuff).

You know, my years old 7D is the most comfortable in hand camera I have. I mainly use a grip on the Fuji X-T2 (not a battery grip, but just something to make it more comfortable). Of course, when I really want to travel light I can go naked... I do of course mean removing the grip :D

If Canon lenses worked great in C-AF etc. I'd have an A7III right now. Being able to mount a smaller manual lens for a truly small setup would be great. I'll stick with the Fuji for now though and keep on hoping Canon get their act together...

That isn't my biggest complaint, it is that it blocks the battery door so if you like it on, you will be removing and reattaching it constantly.

Yeah, I should have been more clear - I’m referencing the current lineup on Sony bodies. The original A7 was definitely a bit uncomfortable, the grip was far too shallow. But having used an A7RII etc - that’s improved massively. Perfectly comfortable for most uses.

Been reading through thread a bit but way behind so will ask my questions now.

I have sold my D810 and FF lenses but still have my D500 and a couple of lenses which I'm looking to sell due to some health issues.

I want to keep a half tidy camera and been looking at the A72 with the kit lens, for the price does it offer good value? can you BBF and does the camera come with a clip on flash?..........I know theres not a great deal of difference between the sizes of FF cameras but as the wife will also be using it she prefers EVF so will stick with mirrorless.........I ahve had most Fujis in the past and fancy a change from them.

For a hobby, sure, but I don't trust it to last a whole wedding. I know you can recharge in body but on a job, I need to able to swap battery quickly, as quickly as memory cards.

I was reading a blog by a wedding photographer who had been shooting the A73 - who had shot 80% of a wedding on one battery. He didn’t state how many shots, which is a bit annoying, though.

Doesn’t the new battery last for like forever now though?

Going by the reviews - yup. Even in video it lasts ages. Long gone will be the days of me carrying 5 batteries in my bag! [emoji1]

You'll need the a73 or a7r3 if you want something comparable..... the 2 will be lacking.

I did get used to carrying a few extra batteries with me but after recently using a dslr it was nice to not have to keep glancing over at the battery indicator.

No big ergonomic handling issues for me and the Sony A9, however I tend to use it with the battery grip most of the time.
Even without the grip it’s fine for me, but I do have small hands. :)
