The Amazing Sony A1/A7/A9/APS-C & Anything else welcome Mega Thread!

I am thinking about switching over to Sony to lighten the load on my aching knees - in the Lake District this week and already cursing the weight of my backpack after a few days.

Anyone using the A7R3 for landscapes and if so are you using an L-bracket? Interested to know if I can get a cable release into the slot with an L-bracket fitted?

Thanks

Dave.

Thanks - it states side port access but the video on the kirkphoto option looks like there would be no room for a cable release when mounted to the tripod in portrait orientation. I know I have the option of wireless release to fall back on, but like to have a none battery operated option as well (one less battery to worry about when up on a hill) :)

Has anyone used a L-bracket / cable release?

Will price up the wireless ones as well - just in case

Could use your phone and Sony app :)

The rumor site posts about NiSi cinema lenses which are available in E mount...

Here's a link to NiSi's site...

I'm not in the market for these lenses or any other cinema lenses but what interested me is that this company seems to be relatively new (they say - NiSi Filters started to research optical accessories in Zhuhai, China from 2005.) and it all makes me wonder what new players will emerge in comping years.

If you have a look at Flickr both the Sony A7 and A7 II more or less had the same IQ / sensor output.
For me, the IQ from these 24mp sensor was good enough, I can't comment on JPEG as I always used RAW.
AF was acceptable in good light and its a pretty decent camera for the price, however there wasn't a big jump from the original A7 to A7 II in AF..... you do get the added value of 4.5 stops IBIS though.
The original Sony A7 represents good value too.

I though the jpeg was fine with it but I shoot raw. Tbh it a damn fine camera for a 2nd camera mate you be pls. The ibis is great too

Unless you need the IBIS, Id probably go for a MK1. As said, image quality is the same and AF wasn't improved that much.

JPG colour isn't as good as Fuji, but then no other camera is in jpg imo. Lightroom has some good preset colour tweaks for Sony now.

Thanks. Plenty to think about. Maybe continue to save...

Fuji beckons..

Whoever bought that is a real b*****d! :naughty:

I wouldn't be so quick to buy from LCE. I have had my fair share of decentred Sony lenses from them when bought used. But their after sales support is awesome so it's easy to get it fixed or send it back but still I am not confident buying from them.

Why are you not confident? You just gave a very good reason to buy from them? You get a 6 month no quibble warranty, 14 days returns for any reason. I would say thats better than a lot of places. Bought loads form them. Service is brilliant.

Like I said after sales support is awesome.
I suppose it's a mind thing because I have got decentred copies from them even for lenses that's not know to have any QC issues. So if I buy a lens with known QC issue I feel knowing my luck with LCE it'll most probably be decentered. Then it's 2-3 weeks of waiting, calls back and forth etc. I'll also have to bear postage one way. So it's just hassle, that's all.

Also I am sitting on a marginally better offer from someone I know personally :D
So I can get a good copy of the lens for sure since it's been tried and tested. But in this case I of course get no warranty...

I see your point about bad luck :)

Meh, Id just send it back... at their cost for being faulty within 14 days (I discussed this with them). Rather also support them than grey at much higher cost / risk.

Where did I say I am getting grey or considering grey...

Yes I'd have bought from them if I didn't have the other offer for a known good copy. But the person out of town for a couple weeks :(
So in meantime I am trying to find a well priced samyang 35mm if possible :)

Probably just as well, I really want to see one in person, going to Berlin in a few weeks, might find a camera shop there to test.

Phone SRS and ask for a stock update, if you can order for 499 then they will need to honour the price when they get more stock. Theres Bristol cameras and another dealer for a little more.

I did and they couldn't tell me when they'd be in stock. But even at £500 I rather buy the ziess. £400-450 for samyang would be what I am looking at to make me want to buy that over the zeiss.

Or buy a used Sony Zeiss 35mm f2.8 for £350ish :D

pffft..... none that f2.8 prime b*****ks here please :D

You'll be buying used then

There have always been slower primes, even ones made by the high end manufacturers with high priced red dots. Slower primes can have advantages and in the case of the 35mm f2.8 the advantages are pretty obvious... it's teeny tiny. What you have to do is consider that positive against the negative of it not being f1.x.
