The Amazing Sony A1/A7/A9/APS-C & Anything else welcome Mega Thread!

Also, it did fail to focus on some lower contrast objects in store. I'm pretty sure my D750 would have focussed on these, but I didn't have it with me to do a direct comparison.

It was probably down to the lens you're using more so than the body, with a A73 I'm finding the 90mm macro AF misses some stuff which really isn't that challenging but the Batis 85mm will usually hit it. Yeah I know it's a macro lens but the point remains.

The focus illuminator is ******* useless too, use anything but a small lens and it's always blocked. Hopefully it's better placed on other models.

It was the 100-400mm (y).

Finally got my hands on the A7riii today. After trying the A7rii at the weekend I'd pretty much scrapped the Sony idea and was pretty set on getting the D850, but after using the Mark III it has left me a little unsure,....... again

First the positives. The different grip actually meant my fingers had more room and were less prone to foul on the lens, also it felt nicer to hold and my pinky finger felt more comfortable. It fells more solid than the Mark II imo, and I agree with JJ that the Mark III does feel better built than the D750. Whether it's as good as the D850 I'm not sure, but it's certainly a solid bit of kit. AF-S was as snappy as you'd like, as expected. The viewfinder was very nice, best I've used, it almost fools you into thinking you're not looking at a screen.

Now the negatives. Initially EVF lag was bad, but fortunately they had a Sony rep in store and they changed the EVF refresh to high and ensured image review was off (which it was already) and it made it much better. However, when panning across the shop a tiny bit of lag was still present. Unfortunately I couldn't' do any real world testing to know if this would cause an issue when panning an actual subject or whether the lag is small enough not to cause a problem. This was at 8fps. At 10fps panning was just a no go due to not seeing the image in real time. Also, it did fail to focus on some lower contrast objects in store. I'm pretty sure my D750 would have focussed on these, but I didn't have it with me to do a direct comparison.

When using the camera in portrait orientation with the battery grip it did seem to shift the weight well over to the left and it felt quite unbalanced. I know using a grip on any camera shifts the weight to the side in portrait due to the lens no longer being central, but it seemed to be exaggerated on the A7riii. The grip was surprisingly big in comparison to the body and I think this may be why it shifts the weight over so much. Finally, whilst there's more room for my fingers on the Mark iii I still wouldn't be able to use it with gloves.

There was so much I liked about the A7riii, it's a reallyl nice bit of kit. I'm going to mull it over, and I have asked the store for some prices on my gear, but I'm wondering if there's too many negatives considering the cost to change. If I could swap like for like I think I'd definitely give it a go, but to have to fork out a further £2.5-£3k on top of what I've got already I really need to be 100% happy, which unfortunately I'm not.

Anyway, just thought I'd share my musings :p

It is a lot of money, I think you should take at least 6 months to reflect.

3 months, I remember all the questions :D
Ahh, just remembered what all the questions probably were :p I think it was when I was looking at going FF and swapping from the A77-II to (at the time) 5D3 and I was concerned about using an OVF due to not having the benefit of the WYSIWYG EVF, and also the crappy live view AF ;) As soon as I'd got the money together to go FF the D750 came out and the decision of that over the 5D3 was pretty quick tbh.

After I showed you the video of the colour quiz.

Give it a try with another lens and see if the behaviour changes, there's definitely some weirdness going on here. When I magnify the view it'll focus on stuff it's missing at 100%, which makes no sense? Why should magnification change how it performs?

Was this at Harrison’s. You be going back tmr to pick it up [emoji1303]
No, LCE. Harrison's don't have a demo model.

Oh in that case, its not surprising.... it is after all a f4.5-5.6 lens. :)
I've got f5.6 and f6.3 lenses for my D750 which is what I was comparing it to when I made my comment (y)

Decision's made tbh, the Sony's not for me just yet.

sure your not getting him mixed up with Rookies :D
To be fair I've pondered this enough to make it easy to get mixed up ;)

After I showed you the video of the colour quiz.
That did help for sure (y) You were to blame for me going to the Dark Side

No, I don't think it's for me just yet. Glad I explored it though as it'd have niggled away otherwise. Really nice camera, and system for that matter. Lenses feel very well built, zoom and focus rings feel spot on.

nice! :) I plan to buy one, it's a number 2 priority - soon my precious..soon

I think I am good for now, going to judge all my adapted lenses against this Zeiss. This is the bar that I’ve set and if I think in a pressured situation the adapted lenses perform as well or close to it then I’ll continue to do that rather than buy more E-mount lenses.

I think that’s fair….so the bar is one of the best lens ever made.

Only the 105/1.4 non-working sample.
