The Amazing Sony A1/A7/A9/APS-C & Anything else welcome Mega Thread!

Zeiss 50/1.4 Planar has arrived.

It’s not that big really, all these reviewers are a bunch of girls :p the Sigma 50/1.4 is heavier and it’s not a patch on the Canon 85/1.2 or 24-70L mk1.

I think one thing that doesn't help is that pictures of the lens and body combination from the front quarters often make the lenses look bigger. Handling the camera and lens is the best way to judge I suppose.

Not yet. I’m meant to have a shoot tomorrow so it’s leaving it a bit close to secure glass.
So faffing about and stick with the Sony system, you know it makes sense....... just buy a FE 85mm f1.4 GM, job done! :D

I’m still waiting on the refund for the one I sent back. But yeah, a nice 50 and 85 could give me back the Sony mojo. I think the 1.2 and 135 will have to go.

Sell the lot, go 100% native.... :D

From the outside looking in I don't think I'd be interested in the new Fuji and reading the thread it's difficult for me to understand what they're all so worked up about. I know it has IS, a top display and (I think) additional video features but people that I'd assume to be mainly stills shooters seem to be very interested but on the negative side it's bigger and doesn't seem to move image quality on. Maybe some of it is just plain old GAS.

Well you are a bit of a fuji hater so wouldn’t expect you to have much understanding of why some are worked up about it.

It will appeal to a lot of people and also put some off due to the size. A lot of feedback was that people wanted something chunkier and closer to dslr as for some it’s more comfortable to hold on to for long shoots. The inclusion of ibis is welcomed, as is the amazing new evf. To have the 90mm f2 stabilised is really appealing to me.

I like this picture but I've had problems with the colour version because with the light through the greenery everything is so green and there's a tint on her face. Doing global adjustments makes Mrs Woof Woof look right but the background not and vice versa. I'll have to have a go at it with Mrs Woof Woof selected and given different processing.

In the meantime I did a B&W. A7 and an old Minolta but I forget which one, maybe 55mm f1.7 MC. These lenses aren't for everyone at wide apertures but I like them.

I'm a Fuji hater but my first digital camera was a Fuji? Yeah, right :D

I suppose it isn't worth saying yet again but I will. I just don't give a t@ss who makes the kit.

I'm not too fussed about IS. On longer lenses of 100mm+ I suppose it'd be useful but with the sort of lenses I tend to like using I don't see much advantage and I don't tend to take many pictures with shorter lenses at double digit shutter speeds. To each his own.

Without watching it, what was the outcome? :)

Face and eye detect superb in very low light conditions and about the same on both cameras. Centre lock on not so effective on both cameras with the A7III just a tad better than the A9.

I think we’ll see more of the mirrorless bodies going larger, I wouldn’t be stunned if Canon and Nikon rolled out DSLR size bodies with mirrorless tech initially rather than going for the small size, which isn’t everyone’s cup of tea......

1 example is shooting portraits in low light. the ibis allows for slower shutter speeds and therefore lower iso. in most cases thats a cleaner image.
another example is adding some motion handheld without the need of a tripod.
also not everyone has steady hands for nailing critical focus at wide apertures. ibis helps.

so while none of the above may be useful to you, is it beyond the realms of possibility that it may be really useful to others?

When shooting people in lower light what shutter speed will you be aiming for? I'd want to keep the shutter speed up as people move, even when they're sat still they move. Maybe I do have steadier hands than some but my main priority when taking pictures in lower light is the movement of the subject and cancelling it out it with the shutter speed. If the subject is a still life then fine, I can see the advantage of shooting at 1/50 but again I don't tend to shoot too many low light still life pictures and even when I do with something between 28-50mm or there abouts or even stretching to 85mm or so shooting at something like 1/80-100 without IS is very probably gong to be fine. Get to shooting deer at twilight with a 200mm lens and there's a clear advantage to IS but I don't do that.

Yes, I can see the appeal of the new Fuji but I do also think there's an element of GAS with some. Maybe. Just my opinion and like I often say YMMV but please drop the fanboy Fuji hater stuff. If you met me you'd probably accept that there isn't a fan boy or hater bone in my body. I honestly couldn't give a flying about these things.

The Fuji system is a great system in my opinion, the best of what APS-C has to offer and I would say they are are ahead of Sony in some areas. :) I just prefer a full-frame system and what it gives you. :)

They'd have to drop the XTrans for me to choose one over an A6xxx as the obsessive in me would be looking for Xtrans issues all the time.

FF though, yes. It's the only reason I have an A7.

The original Fuji X100 was a normal Bayer sensor..... :D

I agree, I fully expect Canon to make different size bodies so they can reinforce where they intend each product range to be aimed at.

Mmmm Canon 1DX ///M .... kind of like those fugly BMW 4x4 M models....... stick a ///M on the end of it, job done! :D

my lowest shutter speed with the 100mm was 1/30s. i you tell your model to hold a pose they should hold it until you take the shot. mostly i was shooting around 1/50s as i have a habit of keeping iso low.
it doesn't work in all situations grated, but id much much rather have ibis than not have it. i don't have steady hands so its really beneficial to me.

yes of course theres a huge element of GAS involved and i'll always hold my hands up to that. guilty as charged. But those in glass houses shouldn't throw stones, Mr 35mm.

you have history of of spouting misinformation and negative comments about the fuji system which i pulled you up on before. so I'm my eyes on here you do come across as having some hate towards Fuji.
I'm sure if i met you though you're a very nice guy.

Really? What did I say and when or I'll ask you to stop being such a fanboy child and grow up. Even if it gets me banned as it did on LL. Second thoughts don't bother, see my later comment.

I may have said a couple of things in fun... but we all do that.

But to answer a couple of your points I've never hired/shot a model. I do take quite a few shots of people in low light but not at 1/30 or anything like it as friends and family wont stand or even sit that still. I'll aim for 1/80-100 minimum and at 28-85mm that's doable without IS and at that speed and focal length subject movement is the main worry for me. I wouldn't expect good low light no flash results subject movement wise with or without IS at 1/30. YMMV. With flash it's a different issue and I'd shoot at 1/30 with flash to freeze the subject and blur the background and not worry about IS. YMMV.

Your comment about 35mm lenses is rather daft but... Yes I have a few but I like the focal length and they all give a different look. I also have different 24, 28, 50, 85 and 135mm lenses but the key thing is that they're all slightly different. What's wrong with that? And they're all different makes and even when I prefer one (like the Minolta Rokkor 35/50mm) it's not because of the badge it's because of the look at wider apertures. They are different to the other ones I own and there are times when I may just prefer a Zuiko, for other reasons than the look at wider apertures.

That's not being a fanboy it's seeing and using lenses of the same focal length but different properties.

Anyway, I've done explaining to you... If you do think I'm a Fuji hating fanboy fill your boots or hit ignore. Either way I'm happy.
