The Amazing Sony A1/A7/A9/APS-C & Anything else welcome Mega Thread!

:D tbf though I found the a7rii very good in AFS. I'm hoping the a7iii caf is a big step up... from what I've seen so far it probs is.
Even the A7riii is a big step up apparently, and the A7iii better still (y)

I've owned plenty of D750s and now have an R2

The D750 has far superior controls for adjusting the AF and getting exactly how you want it very fast

Whilst the R2 may have more points etc it isn't even close to good how you interact with the AF settings

Slow paced portraits etc id probably give the R2 the edge.

This is where it really delivers.

The criticism of Canon is not that they don't know what they're doing, it's that they know exactly what they're doing at their customers expense.
I don't understand what Canon are doing wrong at their customers expense. Care to elaborate?

As far as I can see they are still selling more cameras than anyone else. DSLRs are still outselling mirrorless by about 2-1, unless someone has some more up to date statistics. They seem to be giving the majority of people what they want. Nobody is forcing anyone to buy their equipment, so how are they doing anything at a customers expense?

I think the thought is that they hobble their cameras.

As to selling lots of kit... I've no doubt they do but you'd have to be a hard core Canon nut to point at some of their latter kit and say "Yup. They're really going for it with that one."

Tbh I would hazard a guess that the majority of people buying cameras do not know the difference in crop sensor vs FF let alone whether one has better DR or AF etc than another. I speak to a lot of people on a daily basis and if the conversation does veer in the direction of photography the usual response from casual or non photographers is “Canon are the best aren’t they?”. I guess that’s the beauty of having the lions share of the market, people just assume they’re the best.

Why ask such a redundant question? You already know the answer.

Nobody's forcing you to be here to save Canon's honour either and yet here you are. Telling me Canon's sales figures doesn't make their products any better, why are you so obsessed with their sales figures? Does it help you take better photos?

Devil’s advocate...Sony certainly has taken a leap in the past 12 months since the A9, but having 3 bodies that are killing it does it make it the best?

I mean objectively speaking, which brand is the best?

Most complete native lens selection.
Most complete native flash system.
Tried and tested reliability.
Tried and tested durability.
After sale tech support.

That’s the thing, there is no universal best, only what’s best for the individual (y)

That’s a subjective answer, I’m asking an objective question which should be easy to answer.

I can make a solid case that all the questions that I put forward, the answer is Canon. Of course, only if you need any of those, if you just want to vlog with something small. Sony RX100V all day long.

Yes, but then there are other things too, best sensor, best ergonomics, best AF system, best features in which case what is best gets slightly more muddied.

If I was buying into a DSLR system from scratch it would be Nikon all day long for a given price point. For example the Canon 5div and D850 are a similar price point, but the D850 is better in just about every area barring live view AF. Build quality about the same. Lens choice, take your pick. Flash system, again take your pic (nikon’s CLS is very good). Tried and tested reliability, not heard any major problems from either. After sale tech support, you hear good and bad from both. I’ve had excellent service from Nikon. Canon have a better pro service granted but we’ve been taking consumer/enthusiasts.

So imo the systems are pretty much on a par, but at present Nikon are making noticeably better bodies for a price point.

Just for the record I have no brand preference or loyalty, I just go with whatever offers the best at the time for the price I can afford (y)

I wonder what an alien would make of all this if they beamed down to my living room and sat next to me viewing this thread?

Maybe they'd be baffled by the whole DSLR v CSC thing, maybe they'd be confused at the differences between Canon and Nikon and Sony... or maybe they'd just think "Why has Woof Woof got his hand on my thigh..."

cough cough D600 D800 d7000 d750 recalls

With regard to the issue with which multiple granular dust spots are reflected in images captured with the D600 digital SLR camera, Nikon sincerely apologizes for any concern and inconvenience suffered by D600 users, retailers, and all concerned.

Because Nikon takes this matter very seriously, we will continue to offer users of the D600 a special service with which cameras are inspected, cleaned, and if necessary, shutter and related parts are replaced free of charge, even after the product warranty has expired. However, if a number of multiple granular dust spots are still noticeable in images captured with a D600 upon which the above service has been performed several times, Nikon will replace it with a new D600 or an equivalent model.

Nikon will continue to work to improve the quality of its products and services even further.
We hope that you will continue to choose Nikon products for your photographic needs

Nikon D600 was poor, everything else has been handled well. It’s not as though other brands haven’t had their issues, including Canon. Sony just fix it by bringing out another camera ;)

Most complete native lens selection.

Not Sony but third parties are making life a lot easier.

Most complete native flash system.

Godox.

Tried and tested reliability.
Tried and tested durability.

Only people who can really answer that are the manufacturer's, most of us will only ever see exceptional one off failures.

After sale tech support.

Not Sony?
