The Amazing Sony A1/A7/A9/APS-C & Anything else welcome Mega Thread!

Yeah, just checked the A7riii and that's not gone down at all yet I don't think, likewise the D850. Seems cameras don't have an initial drop off anymore, will be interesting to see what happens when the demand drops.

It's not the same screen, the A7Riii is a better quality screen with more resolution. Size wise they're probably the same though (y). Nice to see you've got your priorities in order ;)

Hahaha! Cheapest accessory and no need to pre order lol

Talking about price and money the value of GBP has risen yet again... but cameras still at the rip-off price

I doubt prices will drop anytime soon.

I bought my Sony A7R II's for £1999 each when they were first released.
The A7R II is currently £2399!! :o and thats after the Sony A7R III has been released too!

Another wedding, between Goodwood, New York and weddings my a7RII has taken quite the hammering recently.

Interestingly, from my last 3 weddings, over 90% of delivered photos have been with the Zeiss 55mm 1.8. I've always been a 35/85 shooter but lately I've really enjoying the consistency of one focal length. I'm tempted to chop everything in (28/55/85) and go with the 24-105mm f4 and 50mm 1.4. Just not sure if I'll regret the switch from the 55 to the 50.

Great capture,
the Sony Zeiss 50mm f1.4 is a big beast of a lens compared to the baby Otus.
Do you need the buttery effect and f1.4 of the 50mm? :D

The size is my main concern as I don't think I really need the 1.4, I just love the rendering (I've never fallen for the 55 in that way). Also not sure how much slower AF would be in the real world.

Severely tempted by the A7iii. Will have to wait for the price to decrease though I think. We're off to Canada this summer and the exchange rate at the moment is favourable too so that may be a factor. I've been the dark a bit with mirrorless and not really looked into it that much but since doing some research I find myself asking why I never considered it before!

What's the situation with third party lenses? Coming from a Nikon DX!

:) I didn't even know there was a 50mm 1.4 - thanks for enlightening me..

Oh it's all A mount isn't it..

My main problem is i need the 70-200 so that only leaves budget for something cheap as a walk about! The 28-70 is an option but looks a bit meh!

I do like 50mm, but I tried the 1.8 and wasn’t keen and the sensible option is a 35mm as it can capture most situations until I can afford a better standard zoom.

Plus the Samyang gets pretty good feedback and it’s so small too!! Downfall it’s 2.8, not 1.8.

... if anything the A7iii is a much more important release for Sony, its in much higher demand than the A7riii and A9 because of its spec vs pricepoint. They really don't seem concerned about cannibalising, they just want market share and lens sales.... which makes sense. Loss leader.

Canon is going to be in deep doo doo if they don't wake up and change their song, look at the execs laughable statement about crippling the M50 when they didn't have to. They chose to and admitted it, like they are proud about it!!

And the Sony Zeiss 35mm f1.4 too sir? :D
What about the Sony 90mm f2.8 G Macro?
C-ching!

I have the 35, Louise wants the macro so will probably get it

Also just found out you have to manually update each lens firmware.. Better check those

You can get Zeiss but nothing else really unless you want to use adapters, in which case you can use Canon EF lenses but they don't tend to work as good as native lenses. Sigma have announced that they will be bringing out some Art primes in Sony e-mount, but nothing on zooms yet. Would be nice if they did a cheaper (but still very good) 24-70mm f4 for travel.

Yeah it's a shame there's no cheaper 70-200mm f2.8. I guess we need to wait a few years and for a mark ii to come out before the price is anywhere near the Nikon VRII

The GAS in this thread is like nothing I've seen on TP hahah
it's a special breed of GAS..... Sony GAS!!! lol
I narrowly avoid my GAS attack last night and passed on the £300 discounted Sony A7 III.... however GAS is still bubbling and I think I may end up with one soon! lol :o

Correct and the 70-200mm GM has had about 4-5 updates.... the last one improved it a lot when trying to AF-C during zooming etc. :D
Also the update for the 85mm GM improves focusing speed.

How do you know its a loss leader? What makes you think they will be making a loss on the camera?

So get the 70-200, 35 and kit lens (its pretty good).

I doubt the Sony A9 is a loss leader as the profit margin is pretty decent on the Sony A9's ..... :D The £300 discount was a great saving on the A7 III.... its something like 15% off!

Wilkinson were doing £400 off the Sony A9 brining it down to £3899 which included the warranty and battery block.
I doubt both Wilkinson and Sony would make nothing from the sale.

Well kind of, I should've used " ", they won't be making a loss, but I bet the profit margin will be lower in comparison to their other cameras. The pricing is very aggressive.

The Wilkinson offer was on ALL their cameras, its not a Sony special.

My point was that yes the savings were across everything but surely Wilkinson wouldn't knock £400 off the Sony A9 and make a loss in the process, which mean's they had the margin to do the discounts? Or maybe they did make a loss? :o :D

You can pick up an A9 for under 3k grey, I think the A9 is overpriced in the UK by a large amount.

Sony has really opened up the doors for Nikon and Canon users to consider it as a viable replacement, the price point is really aggressive in terms of spec etc.
The Sony lenses can be expensive so its wise to price up the entire system if you are going to replace like for like and then see where you stand and if its worth the cost to change.
Sigma have announced FE mount Art lenses but they are pretty big.
Tamrom are starting to develop FE lenses with their first being the FE 28-75mm f2.8
Zeiss make the Batis range for the FE mount, they are great.
Samyang make FE lenses too.

:D

That's unusual

It's not over priced when you compare it to the Nikon D5 and Canon 1DX Mark II though. :D
Yes if you compare UK prices with Grey, they are higher.
Everything seems overpriced these days, not just camera's :(

That's because price went up but they are not coming down now that GBP is nearly back to its former value
