The Amazing Sony A1/A7/A9/APS-C & Anything else welcome Mega Thread!

It was BIG, it makes the 5D4 like a DSLR on a diet.

I am looking at the Sony now and think….how do they make it so small…it's smaller than the X-T1. The amount of tech in it is amazing in this Sony. I can't wait to try out the Eye-AF.

But it seems all the lenses work as they should, except the 100L. Not sure how the metabones will work with that but MC-11 is certainly a no go for AF purposes. When it works, its okay, but half the time it doesn't. Turning on or off the IS can make the whole lens unresponsive. I keep having to check whether i left the lens in Manual focus or not when it isn't responding. Ah well, you can't win them all.

There is also a weird thing, when mounting a lens onto the Sony, not sure what signal it sends to the lens because it turns all lenses' aperture ring to close up. Whereas when you mount a lens on a Canon, it opens it wide when you take it off.

Ime Metabones will be the same. Sometimes good, sometimes bad. Not to be relied upon for anything important.

Got a couple of high res jpegs coming so can post them up next to my jpegs to get an idea of how they compare.
Cool. Tbh, I was just interested to see what ‘pros’ shoot, not overly fussed about about directly comparing IQ but I guess would be interesting.

Actually the metabones was the only adapter with which 100L used to work properly (but it's a macro lens after all so AF won't be fast!).

You are welcome to try mine, as long as you are happy to bear postage both ways if you want to return it :)

Be interesting too see what you think. I know people talk about action in low light, but this venue was worse than a dim church. I should have taken pic on iPhone for reference!

There's a piece over at DPR about Canon mirrorless...

https://www.dpreview.com/interviews...w-increased-competition-allows-us-to-level-up

They touch on the change from FD to EF and ask if it could happen again with the change from DSLR to mirrorless...

"In 1987, the shift was from a mechanical interface to an electronic interface. That [precluded cross-compatibility]. Despite that shift, the change provided significantly more value for our customers, which is why we went ahead. If it turns out that [the introduction of mirrorless] will create a similar situation, this might be a decision that we would take [again]. But we’re not sure yet.

Because we’re already using an electronic interface, the shift will be more gradual [than it was in 1987] so [we would better able to] maintain compatibility."

Reading that it seems to me that Canon hasn't decided which way to go yet and if that's the case I can't see them introducing a serious mirrorless camera any time soon which seems at odds with the rumors about some imminent release. Maybe they're been blowing smoke about a new mirrorless camera to try and persuade Canon users to stick with them rather than moving to an A7x.

"It's been a long time coming, but in this interview Mr. Tokura came pretty close to at least hinting that higher-end, perhaps even full-frame mirrorless is imminent – and maybe even within the next 12 months. As he said, Canon has the technology – it just has to put all the pieces together.

Possibly even more exciting is the possibility of a professional model to come by 2020. Back in 2016, Mr. Tokura reminded me that Canon likes to launch flagship models in Olympic years, and the fact that the next Olympiad will be held in Tokyo is likely to present an irresistible opportunity. You heard it here first."

Time will tell.

What canon need last to understand is that we are not asking for the body to be tiny, at least for me, what we want is the tech above all else. The Dua Pixel tech in an EVF for stills will be epic.

I can’t wait to see what Nikon & Canon bring out to compete with Sony. :)

If that piece is right and if Canon haven't decided what mount to use yet I can't see anything coming out with a suite of lenses... Maybe they could bring out a mid to top end mirrorless with two or three lenses and an adapter for EF lenses. This has always seemed to be a fudge to me but at least it would keep the Canon DSLR crowd sort of happy whilst allowing those who want to move to mirrorless to do so but surely a mirrorless system relying on adapted DSLR lenses can never take full advantage of the newer technologies and features that mirrorless can bring.

I was a Nikon user for something over 20 years or more and a Canon user for 10 years or more but frankly I just don't care who makes the kit so I can't say that I'm eagerly awaiting anything because of the badge. If it comes and it's great then great :D but if my little Sony A7 still does what I want I'll keep using it :D

I've just been browsing Flickr through one of the a7III groups, and saw mention of the IBIS not working with the Metabones IV adapter - has anyone heard of this before? Seems a little odd..

I just want them to make the move so there is some competition.

Canon to Nikon to Sony here too. One of the reasons I didn't wait around for Canon is even if they do bring out a mid-high end mirrorless they're going to sabotage it to maintain their ranges and it seems very doubtful they'll tackle the lack of native glass with the same kind of fervor Sony is.

I'd love to be wrong but I have very low expectations from Canon, maybe if they lose a chunk of the market they'll get off their behinds.

If there wasn't an EF adapter for the Sony, do you think Sony's rise in the mirrorless world would have been so fast, if they only had to make do with native autofocus glass?

Perhaps, but by then Sony might have captured more customers.
I think Canon & Nikon should just bite the bullet and release the best mirrorless body they can make regardless of their other DSLR lines.

Would be nice to see them really go at one another, it'd be a huge win for photographers for a little while.

On another note, am I doing something wrong here? With the A7 III, when I use the magnification function and autofocus on something the focus point is always behind where I expect it to be, turn off magnification without changing anything else and it hits the correct spot perfectly.

I assume it's intended mainly to assist you when manual focusing but it still seems like odd behaviour.

Adobe just told me it be 3-4 month before update comes for our camera. Can’t be right?

That wasn't my point though was it?

My point was that a system relying on legacy DSLR glass maybe couldn't take full advantage of the new technologies and features we may see and which mirrorless is probably better for.

I think I am liking this Sony camera.

Sure it doesn’t have the true AF of the A9 but it is still ridiculously good value, its £1,000 less than a 5D4 ! The icing on the cake and what really clinch it is the Eye-AF in continuous.

EVF and LCD isn’t top spec but that doesn’t affect IQ so not a worry.

DR is currently one of the best you can get.

24mp is a sweet spot.

Dual cards (okay it should be the same in both but that’s for another thread!)

Flip screen.

Wifi enabled.

I have mapped a couple of the Custom buttons to mirror my Canon set up, using the AEL as Eye-AF, almost like a back button focus, but instead of tracking the body of a subject, it is tracking the eye, amazing. I just hope this can work against a face in the crowd.

There are many times where in the 5D4, and I would normally use single point focus AF single shot and it would miss focus, and is really frustrating. I can’t wait to really try out this system….Have an enagement shoot on Good Friday next week, will use it in tandum with my 5D4 and see how it compares side by side. Which means I need to really shoot something with it first to at least get to know it a bit better.

Just give me an A9 with Canon mount and I will be happy. Personally I want all the benefits of mirrorless but without the smaller body.

Canon really have 2 options

1 – They go in fully with a new mount, A9 style Mirrorless with new glass.

They could include in the box an adaptor for EF and EF-S lenses, much like Sigma MC-11. Except that being all in house, it should work perfectly. They’ve done this before with FD to EOS, people will moan but they’ll get over it. But the fact is people already do this with the Sony with Canon glass would suggest that its not a problem. If there are no Metabone or MC-11, I highly doubt Sony’s sales will be anywhere like it is, I mean I for one would not have bought one. Buying a body to use with all the glass is easily justify, buying an entirely new set up requires a lot of planning and adapting.

No doubt they will annoy a lot of 1Dx users and to be frank, I don’t think they need to worry. The money is in the glass, if they make a body that all their glass works great on it, people will stay. The new body can even run it side by side model alongside the DSLR. People can choose whether to get a DSLR 5D4, or a mirrorless 5D4. If someone really wants a large body DSLR, they can get one. If they really want that optical viewfinder, get one. But if they want a mirrorless, they can too.

This APS-C M50 cameras for £600 targetting at vloggers, once they get onto the Canon ladder, where do they go really? The lenses from that is limited and doesn’t look like it is expanding much, the tech in them are already behind. They make very little sense.

The only downside to this would be introducing a completely new line of bodies, but then this is planning for the future, phasing out the DSLR. If DSLR is to resides to the history books, this surely is the best route to go.

2 – They could put mirrorless tech in DSLR body, full size DSLR with EVF. It’ll work too, I wouldn’t care for the size and if people are happy already with the current size and weight, it won’t be any heavier without a mirror and prism inside.
