The Amazing Sony A1/A7/A9/APS-C & Anything else welcome Mega Thread!

TBH I do worry about the value of my Nikon F-mount if there's a huge shift. I've not really monitored what's happened to Sony a-mount since e-mount has started to come into it's own, but a-mount hasn't ever been as big as f-mount AFAIK. I do worry too much  :$

Cool, thanks for this (y)

Depends on the a-mount lens tbh. Some retained the price, some have become collectors items and some have gone down in price...

Basicaly as soon as u press the shutter, the shot goes to the RAM and then onto the card.

The RAM can only hold so much data before it fills and on the A9 is quite difficult to reach that limit. You would need to shoot constantly at 20fps from the moment usain bolt starts running and when he finishes in a 100m sprint.

XQD cards help load the data into the storage. it is vital also indeed and would make clearing the buffer faster.

im hoping the A9 mk2 has 16gb buffer and xqd so you can shoot 400 shots before it complains at 24mp size raw's and clear it in half a minute or less?

How fast is xqd compared to uhs-II?

If you have to shoot at 20fps constantly for 10 seconds to fill the A9 buffer, you really don’t need double the buffer, you just need to concentrate on what you’re shooting more or just shoot video!

You mainly shoot portraits and the odd F1 shot from the stadium so why would you even need a 400 shot buffer?

Because when you have the best you just want more and more.

Personally I wouldn't even want 20 fps or a huge buffer. Can't stand it when I see people at airshows for example just taking aim and slamming the shutter down and following the planes like some sort of machine gun. I have shot in AF-S single shot before and got perfectly in focus shots, the shot I actually wanted and not a possible shot out of 100 from a spray and pray session.

A 24fps rate for the next A9 II would be nice if it also included a in-body RAW to 24p movie conversion option.
Imagine shooting a short 24fps moment and also having the ability to generate a quick video from it. :)

I’ve changed my mind about going higher resolution for the next A9 generation, stick to 24mp but give it so much useable high ISO & DR performance that it’ll practically end up being night vision lol global shutter too. :D

thats my point really.

the buffer is amazing on the a9 and not many would fill it. So why demand XQD cards? :)

xQD isnt going to take off considering its not really been adopted much, Sony is now the only manufacturer making xQD cards... how long before the pull the plug on it?
Sony's solution seem's to be what they have done with the Sony A9, just speed up the SD card write speeds and put in a big enough buffer between the body and SD card so that it doesn't affect write speeds too much.

tea i guess so as sd cards are cheaper and widely available

TBH I don't think anyone is demanding XQD. There was a thought before that this would be the kind of successor to compact flash to offer a faster more robust card but no-one seems to be adopting it, except Nikon. But as you say, if you're getting 200 shots with SD why do you need anything else. I know people always want to move forward but 200 shots, does anyone need this? I can cope with a 12-15 shot buffer. 20-25 would be ideal, but 200?????

I agree, the Sony A9's 241 RAW buffer is crazy! :)

Exciting times, I remember the feeling when I opened my original A7 box.... quality with a big grin ear to ear.
On another note, how did you find the Zeiss 35mm 2.8 ? Thinking of getting one..

It was good but I would have liked a 1.8 version. If you can get it cheap then its a no brainier paired with the Zeiss 55mm f1.8.
These two lenses make for a good nice travelling setup, put them and a body in a little ThinkTank shoulder bag, job done.

Kind of annoying there isn't a 35mm 1.8

Yup, I do think Sony will bring out a 35mm f1.8 as its a gap in the line up, however it may not be a Sony Zeiss designed lens, which is shame as I like matching lenses lol :D

Now if Sony brought out a G Master 35mm f1.4 and 50mm f1.4, I would be all over them :D

The Sony 35mm f2.8 is my most used AF lens. I can't fault it apart from it not being f1.x and it does make for a very compact camera and lens combination and the kit fits in the same small Lowepro bag that my RF style Panasonic GXx and 17mm f1.8 fits in. Happily my A7 and Voigtlander 35mm f1.4 fit in the same bag.

Going forward if I'm honest I want to keep the system lighter. Willing to sacrifice the 1.4 if I'm honest. I really like the 16-35, 28mm 55mm and 85mm. I had the 85GM and it's ridiculously big, 85mm 1.2 territory

I'd love to try out the 35mm Zeiss. May head to jessops to try it

Holy cow, I used the A9 for an event last night .. and it was BEAUTIFUL...

Eye detection tracking so fast, silent so I could burst shots without raising an eyebrow.

I could get focus on my way to a new subject, then side step around until I had a better angle and be ready to take the photo at any time.

Image quality is great, love it all.

This Zeiss stuff is out of my price range as I will be getting the 70-200. So need to deicide on 28-70/50 or the 28/50 combo. I dont use wide that much but the 50 will need a wider friend just in case!

Great stuff and I'm glad it's working out for you :D

I take it banding wasn't an issue with the electronic shutter under artificial lighting?

Hard choice, the 70-200mm is great, the 28-70mm/50mm combo will be a nice match up.
