The Amazing Sony A1/A7/A9/APS-C & Anything else welcome Mega Thread!

I didn't mention that as personally I like full time manual focus override and that lens doesn't have it. Googling tells me it's £279 and it's that lens that came up when I Googled the Sony!!!!! Reading more carefully... the Sony is coming up at £384 used.

Is the Voigtlander 40mm f1.2 a bit of a stretch too far?

To be honest although I've used older lenses a lot the better modern lenses such as the Sony 55mm f1.8 and Voigtlander 40mm have started me thinking that I should be going for the quality end rather than the cheap and characterful :D The files just look sooooooo good :D

PS.
A quick Google shows the Sony 35mm f2.8 at £279, not tempted to that lens?

I had considered the 40mm actually, would probably solve my never ending conundrum with primes of 35 v 50....
But price wise very similar to just buying a Loxia!!

AF wise I think I'll be happy with the 24-105/24-70!

If you use DMF on your A7, every AF lens will do Full Time Manual focus override?

As far as I know there's no manual focus override with the Samyang, you have to switch to manual focus. I'm sure I read that. Maybe the guy who has one can comment :D

I'm going to be using one tomorrow so I'll test it for you.

Edit - As far as I can see from photos of the lens there is no physical AF/MF switch on the barrel which would mean it would need to be switched in camera like the Sony FE 50/1.8 I have. If that's the case it means it's also FBW so I'm pretty much certain that you can use DMF with it.

I've read several reviews which state that full time manual focus is not available, for example...

http://www.photographyblog.com/reviews/samyang_af_35mm_f2_8_fe_review

But there's nothing like first hand accounts so maybe you could check :D

“Jim is correct in the fact that spatial filtering is still ‘active’ on the camera, but to the degree in which it actually affects the image is another story,” Geraci tells PetaPixel."

Maybe for many people this is isn't an issue. I still think Sony are bonkers not having the filtering as a menu option as this is generating a lot of internet angst.

That article states that manual focus is possible when set on the body (as per Sony lenses) so I’m not sure why it says manual override isn’t possible, because that’s what setting it on the body does :0)

I’ll find out today and come back to you. @moomike is using one on his A7Rii and thinks it’s an excellent lens. He’s delivering some amazing studio work with it and is coming to mine tomorrow so I’ll have a go then.

Maybe we're talking about different things. I set my camera to DMC and I like that the lenses then AF but that I can grab the focus ring and focus manually at any time. If the Samyang doesn't allow that and you have to switch from AF to MF to MF that would rule it out for me... but it not being on sale when I got my Sony 35mm f2.8 was more of a deal breaker :D

We’re definitely talking about the same thing (DMF) whereby the camera autofocuses on half press but you can tweak focus by turning the focus ring on the lens.

As far as I know, all focus by wire lenses will do that as there’s no actual physical linkage between the AF motor and the focus ring that needs to be manually disengaged like lenses with an AF/MF switch on the barrel.

One thing I'd find useful would be being able to have the histogram and level in view at the same time. I have the histogram in view and the grid too but I often find that I'm off level by a very small amount, maybe not enough to matter to most people but I can be a bit OCD so I usually correct it and having an in view level would help. My Panny cameras allow me to have everything, grid, level and histogram.

Do any A7 series cameras allow both histogram and level to be in view at the same time?

Happy days :D

I've got something coming... just another old cheap lens :D
Something is better than nothing... its the day before Black Friday and so far I have resisted GAS and not bought anything Sony or Apple related! :o

Nice one..... be great to hear your thoughts on it.... as its smaller than the 24-70mm f2.8 GM and possibly a better all in one solution. :D

I was pretty close to ordering a GM there as well... Email popped in at the right time!

I've also decided that as sharp as it is.. the 65mm has gone back as it's really too big to take unless I know I'm going to use it, frees up my 35/40/50 decision a bit though!

Wowza. I'm a bit surprised but I see your reasoning.

I'm still thinking of getting one (65mm f2) as it'd fit nicely with a 20mm or there abouts and the 40mm f1.2.

I would like Sony to build the following G Master lenses...

FE 35mm f1.4 GM
FE 55mm f1.4 GM
FE 120mm f2.8 Macro GM
FE 135mm f1.8 / 2.8 GM
FE 200mm f2.8 GM
FE 300mm f2.8 GM

:D

Your not wrong there Alan would-be a nice lineup, but I can see myself using the 24-105 for travel given its size/weight so slightly less need for the primes. Loxia 21 is magic though!

Give me a Sigma 35mm and I'll be happy...

Cheers mate :) You are correct in saying DMF works just fine on the Samyang.

No need to switch, DMF works just fine - lens is sharp too, very surprisingly sharp. I had bought it as a stop gap before picking up the Sony version but don't even slightly feel the need to any more tbh, the Samyang suits me just fine.

After reading those reviews though, I'm not sure I would ever have picked one up - I guess it's all subjective. It's perfect for my use - I've never experienced CA that bad in any of my images of random telephone lines against a bright white sky though ;)

Cheers for the confirmation Mike. I thought that review site was talking rubbish [emoji3]

I'm not entirely sure they knew the camera well enough to be honest as the Sony's by wire focusing technically means there's no manual focus override via lens anyway - all set in body as you said earlier (y)

They have 4 in stock , a nice saving.
No doubt somebody will come a long and post that you can buy it cheaper via grey importers :D lol ;)

Yes, Google suggests £3010 from Panamoz, but if I had the cash I suspect I'd be tempted to go with MPB for known UK source.

The Sony A7 was Sony’s big step into the unknown, years later it seems it is paying off.
The original A7 still gives great output. :)

Yeah really the camera that sold me on mirrorless. Well, I didn’t switch fully until the A7rii but it all started with the a7
