The Amazing Sony A1/A7/A9/APS-C & Anything else welcome Mega Thread!

Phoblographer via sar. Point remains 2x better under what conditions with the same amount of phase points.

I agree, we’ll have too see some real world reviews before understanding how big the difference is.

To me the A7R III looks like a good stab at the Nikon D850, 10fps mechanical shutter is a great step for Sony from their original 5fps shutter.

You’d think Sony would have put this mechanical shutter in the A9 as they seem very close releases, but I guess Sony are saving this the next A9x body.

Some key positives over the A9.....

- 10 fps mechanical shutter
- USB 3.1 interface
- Improved 5-axis IBIS @ 5.5 stops
- Anti-flicker mode
- Pixel Shift mode
- Higher resolution, DR & ISO abilities
- Video Profiles & Logging
- PlayMemories Functions
- Touch Screen improvement (minor)

A great and surprising move from Sony in terms of release schedule :)

Looks like minor improvement, meaning I can pick up a cheap R2!

It has just the things I really wanted to see from it - dual card slots, improved eye AF and bigger battery. The thumbstick on the back is a bonus. I'll definitely be looking in to moving across from Canon in the next couple of months..

The a7RIII doesn't seem to have the non blackout viewfinder of the a9. I think once you have introduced that tech anything less seems a bit of a disappointment. imho

Then why bother with An a9 when u can get the A7r3 that has all the tech of teh A9?

think of it as a business mate.

You release one product with everything u can think and then another one thats cheaper but with some if the features

I understand why they pick and choose features to stratify the ranges, but such a major feature that had been a major improvement to mirrorless cameras missing is still a disappointment. Or don't you agree?

The difference between the a7RIII and a9 will be to do with resolution, frame and buffer rates and AF. That seems to be enough to differentiate without not having the zero blackout too imho.

I think the non blackout viewfinder relies upon the very fast on-sensor memory the A9 has, which is not present on the A7RIII sensor.

I'm confident that we will get the non blackout EVF on lower range models in time, but the A7RIII seems they've concentrated on other areas (dual card slots, bigger battery, USB3, etc) which were being touted as reasons NOT to get an A7 series camera.

Exactly, all of the manufacturers to this to a degree, some more than others, in fact the only latest thing I can think of that seemed to throw out that was the D850 which seemed to tick almost all the boxes as far as the Nikon line goes.

Plus the A7RIII has USB3.1 for improved studio tethering, while the A9 has an ethernet port for use at big sporting events, and an extra top dial. Quite a bit of differentiation when you put all the little bits together.

The shutter blackout is presumably due it not having the on-sensor fast RAM that the A9 sensor has.

Edit: Apparently, according to the phoblographer, there is no blackout at 10fps...

im away until the release of this camera practically so after users get this in there hands i may buy one in the new year.

I will need to shift my A7r2 and 5d4 first

lol not really. there are plenty here that chop and change every day lol

im in no rush for this camera.

I change all the time.... had been fancying trying a Leica actually as I've been offered an M240 at a good price... but this looks good... might have both! LOL

Like we totally couldn't have guessed that :p
These days (read post-Brexit) you just need to swap $ for £ to get the UK price.

I half wonder if the 3 year warranty is being thrown in as an effort to dissuade folk saving their cash and buying at Panamoz, etc...... should hopefully be some good savings going that route on one of these and getting the same 3 year warranty (provided Panamoz don't go bust!)

The price different panamoz to uk on an a9 is about £1,300. Crazy

If panamoz does go bust and you paid for it with credit card, can't you claim back using section 75?

You might be right actually

"Section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act also applies to foreign transactions as well as goods bought online, by telephone or mail order for delivery to the UK from overseas."

I'd say between £2400-2500 :)

I was thinking this as the price. My only issue with the sony system is the cost of the sony lenses (at least their fast glass anyway). My d750's offer brilliant performance
for the money, and at £1130 on panamoz they are a no brainer. That said the Sony mirrorless is def shaking up the field.

Hopefully more than £2k otherwise the temptation may be too much

That would be a deal for me to jump at that price.

You reckon you can haggle £500 off an A7rii in the like of parcs, jessops etc?

Probably not Jessops, Parks maybe but you can achieve discounts at independents if you haggle ;)
The mark up on Sony stuff is big.

Jessops have the Sony A7R III on 0% 12 months finance with 3 years warranty.

Not 500 quid.

Good luck with section 75 and a company that's abroad that shuts it's doors.

Well according to section 75 we're covered even if company is abroad as long as the order and delivery is to the UK.

You are right about lens cost although lens v lens there is less difference between an equivalent Canon/Nikon lens than there once was and hopefully if Sigma/Tamron get their fingers out next year and start releasing glass that will have an impact, a Sigma Art 35mm for £600-£700 in E Mount would be awesome!

There is more availability of glass on the used market for Nikon though and that is attractive at times!

Not 500 quid.

I managed it when I bought the A7R II, so its definitely possible, depends on your haggling abilities lol. ;)
That said, its still tempting to buy Grey these days.
