The Amazing Sony A1/A7/A9/APS-C & Anything else welcome Mega Thread!

I have not read all 438 pages on this thread !
I own a 7D1 and though I love it to bits I am concern about the IQ as some cheaper dslr's do have IMO better IQ.
For sports ( motor racing, horse racing etc ) and air shows it is great. I take it on holiday and yes it is rather big and with just hand luggage I do struggle getting clothes and kit in to the suit case.

So I was looking at the Sony A7s Mk2 and with an adapter I could use my Canon glass. I also own a Sony NEX 5R which is an E mount system so any FE Sony glass I buy I could use it on the NEX as well, worth a thought.

I hope the A7s mk2 would make an ideal travel camera and also for landscapes / portraits use as well.

Any advise or suggestions regarding the A7s Mk2 please ?
Unless you do video more than stills don't bother with the a7s2. It only has contrast detection af which is slow and only 12mp so much detail for landscape.

Check out the a7r2

Hi jonneymenoza,

with the Sony R7r2 if I fit a canon to E mount adapter I take it the AF points will still work as if I was on a Canon EOS or is it just the centre AF points ! ?
I am sure I watched a YouTube on one of the A6000 range and it only allowed centre AF points to be used !

yes all AF points work but not all AF mode works on the metabones in "green Mode"

What is green mode?

Green mode is the default setting on the metabones adapter that gives u the most consistant accurate AF performances but limits you to only the following AF settings: Wide, Center, small/medium/large af point that u can move around the screen

Advance mode offers Eye AF, expandable AF etc. Basically opens up all the AF modes but performance is hit and miss.

The MC11 adapter has one mode only which is like the advance mode above offering all AF modes. It is an adapter by Sigma.

Check out my Youtube videos below. i tested 24-70, 70-200 and 100-400

Great photos... I am so tempted to get the 35mm f2.8 and 55mm f1.8 again but in reality I am happy with the output from the G Masters, albeit at a massive size, weight and cost disadvantage! :D
Hindsight is a lovely thing...... should have just stuck with Sony and kept my G Masters, two of which I got very cheap pre-Brexit! :(

This is a copy and paste from Luminous Landscape...

"I have been shooting with the 12-24mm for a while. I will be posting a review with lots of images as well as the old bookcase test shots. I'll start writing it up tomorrow. It is a lightweight lens and is very sharp. Quite a performer for a small lens. The 16-35mm G Master is also a real nice lens. I am really looking forward to 100-400mm lens that I have shot with. The 100-400mm should be here before the end of the month. The 12-24mm fits a very interesting niche as far as what you use it for. Shot when level it is very nice, but introduces strange looks and perspective when slightly tilted. I did use perspective correction in Capture One on some building shots and the results are very nice. There is no way to attach filters with this lens but that doesn't bother me too much. The 16-35mm will handle filters. I plan to test that lens with the Wine Country filter system.

There is a lot to work on to complete this review as well as about 5 others I am currently doing. Bottom line, so far is I am impressed."

WTF?

I can't be sure what he's talking about until he's posted the pictures but it does sound like he's just talking about perspective and the result of tilting the lens and if so these effects will not be unique to the Sony lens. This is an experienced guy but maybe he's never used a 12mm lens before. Yes if you tilt the lens it'll all go funky but this is something that all lenses do, even an optically perfect lens of any focal length will display this and wider lenses just make it all easier to see. IMO the way it's written it reads like he thinks this is a function of the Sony lens but maybe I'm reading it wrong.

I think that wide lenses are maybe some of the most difficult to use well, I think that you really need to think about what you're doing. Maybe this guy hasn't expressed himself well or maybe he needs to think a bit more. I'll look forward to reading his review.

Thank you. Seeing your results any praise from you is very welcome and very flattering indeed :D

The 35mm f2.8 and 55mm f1.8 are IMO world class lenses. The 35mm especially appeals to me as it plays to the strengths of the system as I see them... it makes for a compact, light setup and unobtrusive setup which is good for holidays and days out :D The only thing I really miss (apart from f1.8) is an ability to get a nice close up shot of flowers etc.

I see you've found yourself a new free host ;)
I'd post less if other people posted more :D

I'm sure you must have some pictures you could post here????

That's the thing, when it comes to size/weight Vs. IQ performance these two lenses are unbeatable in my opinion paired with a A7 body its probably one of the best FF portable lightweight setups.

Interesting you think the 35mm f2.8 is so good. I'm excited for when mine finally arrives.
I haven't gone with a 55mm but it does look quite appealing.

Since I started moving to mirrorless with Panasonic MFT cameras and more recently with the A7 I've come to like the look you get from old lenses. The Sony/Zeiss lenses I have are excellent but there's something to be said for the charm of less perfect lenses. Maybe technically excellent shots taken with very good new lenses could be processed to look like the shots you'd get from less good old Rokkor/Zuiko lenses but I don't have the processing skill :D

I think both these lenses are fantastic, the problem I have is that the G Masters are sharp enough, the out of focus rendering is pleasing to my eyes too.... I can just zoom to 50/55mm with the versatility of the zoom etc.
Will see what happens going forwards in terms of what lenses I get :D

Pre Big Dinner at the seaside family shot. It's nothing clever, just f8, compose and shoot :D See Uncle on the far RHS? I just love his shirt :D It was water festival time and flowered shirts are traditional :D

He did actually offer me that shirt but I was too embarrassed to accept. I wish I had though :D

But can't zoom to f1.8 ;)

It's still drizzling here and for anyone like my GF who hasn't seen this sort of rain... it's fine droplets that almost hang in the air. GF is fascinated but wont go outside :D So we're stuck in :(

And just in case anyone wonders what's going on with this... it's common in Thailand and maybe other places too to have a statue or summot and you buy little pieces of gold leaf and stick them on yourself :D

What set up did you go for and what lenses. Sorry I'm on my phone and lazy and can't see a signature

@Riz_Guru Are you taking up weddings again or is this purely GAS?

Nope still planning to do more weddings with the view to eventually leave the IT segment and go full-time, at present the risk to jump into full-time photography is too big.
I will be the first to admit I do suffer from GAS, not just in the photographic domain but other things like consoles, apple kit, cars etc :D
I would like to get some Asian weddings under my belt next and build up my portfolio, also dabbled with the idea of getting a studio setup.
All in good time though. :)

Well won't be much to buy left will there. And those lenses will last you a good long time

Your right.... the only think I can think of is possibly a FE 1.4x TC, 35mm 1.4, 55mm 1.4 and Macro G Master.

Now debating between the 100-400 of the 70-200 F2.8 for my a9. Using canon adapted lens won't do the trick.

Could get the 70-200 and 1.4 extender and then the 400mm later when that gets announced. Decision decisions
