The Amazing Sony A1/A7/A9/APS-C & Anything else welcome Mega Thread!

I hope Sony resolve it soon and on the positive side all this could lead to a few bargain refurbs.

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaand, on another note... Samyang announces their 35mm f2.8 which looks just like the Zeiss / Sony :D and it's cheaper and "apparently the image quality is on par with the Zeiss!" Dunno if it is but if it's anywhere near and if the focus performance is ok and if it doesn't fall apart... I can see it being a big seller. f1.8 would have been nice though :D

A nice option. Hopefully the focus noise won't be as loud as the 50mm 1.4 they released. Would have liked that lens but it's just so bloody loud.

The Zeiss 35mm 2.8 is a cracker lens, the IQ is excellent, I'd be surprised if the Samyang can match it.

I'm pretty sure they could match it for sharpness at normal apertures for a whole picture at normal viewing distances but stuff like bokeh and sharpness across the frame and at wider apertures when looking for the differences could be a harder ask.

It's not sharpness that makes the Zeiss 35mm such an excellent lens, it resolves fine detail extremely well, I'm amazed when I look at photos taken with it and my A7R2 just how much fine detail and textures there are, the Zeiess 55 and Sony 90 Macro exhibit the same detail, all 3 of those lenses are superb.

It's difficult to talk about these things and still sound like a human and I don't like to talk too technical but I think you're looking at the differences between and combination of resolution and sharpness or acutance as captured by the gear and processed by your gear and you and if I'm right you maybe understand that resolution is down to the gear, the camera and lens combination (and also depends on you getting it in focus,) and can be measured and assigned a number and what you can get is limited by the gear and what you get you're stuck with whereas sharpness (or acutance, which is a word I'd never use) whilst being somewhat subjective and dependant on the gear and what it's possible to capture with that gear (unless we go to extremes) can be affected by what you do in post or what the camera does before it outputs the file and maybe easily understood is that a sharper image may also be one with a lower resolution. So yes lenses may well be both sharp across the frame which is what I was talking about and in combination with the camera be able to capture high resolution pictures which I think is what you're talking about.

Anyway. Rather than bother with all that I'd rather be a bit sloppy and say things like sharp across the frame even at wide apertures in the knowledge that if it's sharp on my A7 it will be sharp on your A7RII at the same image size / resolution although it's possible that some sensors may be able to resolve more detail than a lens is capable of capturing and in that case it's great to know that the 35mm f2.8 gives lots of detail on your A7RII.

:D

The a7RII finally seems to be dropping into my price territory now, grey ones have been going for around £1600 on the Bay of e lately. I've been reading reviews of the MC-11 but they're all quite old now, is it a viable setup with the Sigma Art primes in terms of AF?

I hire lenses occasionally so would probably go with the EF mount version, as that opens up quite a few Sigma options.

I can't see myself buying anything in the near future other than a compact 35mm f1.8 and/or a 50mm f2.8 macro with working focus and both of those are doubtful.

The rumor site reports that something new may be on the way...

And for those who think that Sony kit costs too much and should be £2k cheaper than the competition there's a Leica special edition thingy article on Steve Huff's site...

I think it looks 'orrible.

Well done Sony. At least they've got the digital equivalent of a piece of black tape to hide the incorrect software warning out quickly ;0)

They resolved overheating warning, what about overheating itself? From what I see camera still won't do 45 minutes of football game. The only thing they changed is the moment indicator appears, now it's just before camera shuts down [emoji14]

Gulp  £4500 for 45 minutes worth of use.... I can see a pattern :D lol

Only some cameras are affected
You're right only the ones used in warm places [emoji14]
Let's hope Sony sorts it out as soon as possible. If not I think all sports photographers in Iceland, north of Canada, Alaska etc will use bargain priced a9s [emoji1]

How come the angry photographer couldn't make it overheat?

Because ermmmmm it didn't have the faulty batch of logic boards? ;)

Why not just wait until the issue is a little clearer, if it ever is, before deciding it's a faulty board.

Over on DPR people who almost certainly have never even held an A9 are reporting overheating issues and as was pointed out people who've never held one could also have been reporting no issues. Such is the internet :runaway:

I think I can count myself lucky as I've had zero problems with my A7 even though I ordered it before it hit the shops but I think it's best to wait and see and not be an early adopter.

The rumor site is reporting that reliable sources say there's a high MP count camera on the way... but not in the next 3 or 4 months... 60mp A7RIII? A9R?

Linky thingy...

http://www.sonyalpharumors.com/sr4-...i-says-around-60-70-megapixels/#disqus_thread

If it's an A9R maybe they wont be able to maintain the speed as 60mp pictures will take a lot of electronics to push about quickly.... maybe a new overheating fiasco is on the way :D

That comment was meant in jest :D
I had no issues with my original A7 either, but it is a rather basic piece of electronics compared to the newer hardware out these days. ;)

He was pushing and pushing and pushing and pushing camera. You have to use it instead. He didn't say too much about conditions outside, how he used the camera or anything. He just pushed it.

More convincing for me is Jason Laniers wedding with A9, but he loves Sony I think more than anyone posting on YouTube so not sure what to think.

I know. I'm not exactly jumping up and down or demanding you go to the naughty corner.

I'll use more :D
