The Amazing Sony A1/A7/A9/APS-C & Anything else welcome Mega Thread!

For some (certainly those than can afford it) trying out new kit is part of the hobby although I agree with you that some can spend far too much at times!
So you another D750 according to your sig ;)

I love to be able to have a few system as it can be fun to own a few but money doesn't allowed me... If I was mint or win the lottery I certainly will have a few things

Morning Sony users, A7 Glorious week for saying I still like my A7 no plans here for buying Nikon or Fuji I am sure they are very nice but sadly won't make me a better photographer or improve my life quality

Who thinks the next A7 might have a more versatile rear LCD swivel mechanism more like the A77m2 would be really nice.

Anyone think Sony may bring out a sports version of the range or feels the absolute need for faster frame rate

Alan does Sony drive you to ;) maybe you feel like your :banghead: sometimes

Morning all. I'm going to Cambridge this weekend for a photo walk and was wondering which camera to bring? My a7r2 or 5d4?

I think Sony will change the game in their next bodies due in 2017, Sony will crack the AF/performance side of things with their A7 III / A9 bodies, probably as good if not better than their new A99 II.
But don't expect them to be cheap.... based on current bodies out there, I'd say......

A7 III £1699-1999
A7 III R £2999
A7 III S £2799

A9 £3499-4499

I think the a7iii should come out first. 8fps, improved ibis, touch screen, better af. Please please please a joystick. Then a higher resolution model to follow.

All tech with Brexit has increased in price so it's not as if other brands will be significantly less due to size of image files probably the A7 III though not on release I doubt would prefer waiting for price settling maybe 2-3 months

Re af must admit I don't have any real issue I get better keeper rates than my Canon 5d3, more LCD articulation would be useful moderately certain that I won't move for R or S models as pc side of things just causes complications :)

IBIS do you have an issue with stabilisation now ? If so what's your issue I accept on occasion it can be slow locking on but and for me a big but once locked on it's really good

My main wish would be a bit better high ISO performance for me the 5d3 blows the A7 ISO out of the water and closer to the original Canon 7D

Tell me about it, working with the A7RII's 42.2mp files is a right pain, my MacBook Pro struggles....... :)

Haha old signature! Finally realised I don't think I need two systems although I could probably afford to run two.

Nothing wrong with the ibis, but I think there is always room to improve.

Did you get time to do a direct comparison between both the 70-200's?

No because the 70-200 f2.8 GM was too heavy to carry lol :D kidding.
I only did some testing at home and they are both extremely razor sharp, in terms of handling I didn't find the 70-200 2.8 that much bigger than the 70-200 f4, the weight is noticeable but not to the point it was causing any problems.
Money no object, the GM every time, yes you pay high prices for the GM lenses but they realty are up there with the worlds best.

If I had to pick between the two, for professional work definitely the GM, anything else the 70-200 f4 will still make feel good in that its also a very good lens, no cheap glass here folks!
Personally I found the results that good from the GM zooms, I would pick them over primes..... they are that good.

I've taken some of my best pictures when I've been drunk.

Dunno about a different rear screen but maybe we'll see improved focus performance, a little joystick and even dual card slots. Thom Hogan is always bemoaning the lack of good connectivity and usability and whilst I doubt we'll see any great improvements maybe the ever shrinking market will prompt change by someone sooner or later.

Better AF and Dual SD is a must for Sony, I don't think they will disappoint folks... they are leading the market, have you seen the speed of the A6500 and A99 II :D fast enough for even the most hardcore GAS suffers.
Sony could go down the touch screen route with touch AF, that would be a good advantage.

Yep, all Fuji, but then I haven't had a D750 since Feb, just forgot to update it!

So many people are giving up DSLR's and moving to Fuji, my local camera store also said that they have had a massive influx of A7 bodies coming in for trades too
:fuji:

The problem is everybody's definition of better differs, yes FF has is advantages but that doesn't mean its better for certain people/photography ........ I have seen the output of various camera's on Flickr etc and the gap between some systems isn't big enough to justify the increase outlay.

I have seen some stunning photography taken on the new iPhone 7S with the defocussing software addition..... now compare that with say a FF body..... is the photo from the FF body really worth the extra £2000-3000 over the iPhone7S photo?

So the choice is yours..... :D

Let's be honest mobile phones are going to do the vast majority of users it's hobby users still wanting quality sensor and glass

Defocussing software addition which are you using as I to find one that I like yet

I don't use anything like that, better to get it right in-camera first otherwise what is the point of having nice expensive bodies and lenses!

My take FF is really nice for landscape and seascape and if pixel peeping portrait

Crop excellent for sports and lens cost less for extra reach

Lots of file size for fast frame rate is a pain and while I am guessing many sports photographers use jpeg

Like most on here I have had crop and FF my photo ambition is more aligned with FF will Fuji take over the world doubt it very much at the moment Sony are a little behind in some aspects but if FF is your bag it's still no contest :)

Yes, they have the tech and I hope the next A7's are faster.

My A7 is adequate for me and probably just as fast and maybe a little faster than my DSLR's but when I use my MFT cameras the difference is obvious, the MFT cameras are lightening fast and they meter and focus as fast as you can press the button. With the A7's being FF they'll need faster electronics that'll do the job in the A7's small body to match the likes of MFT but as sluggish performance has been a criticism of the A7 series I hope that the next iterations are faster.

That one reason am thinking getting xt2 cos of faster AF and more responsive

One problem for me is that I just don't know how I'm suppose to judge anything on line.

I could be looking at pictures taken by people with a lot of skill and vision who take pictures with an iPhone that'll shame anything posted in this thread and I could at the same time be looking at something which would show obvious weaknesses if viewed at anything other than the 600 pixel wide image I see on line. I'm much happier judging quality if I can download the picture and look at it on my own pc, preferably a raw so I can see what I can do with it rather than judge a picture which might have been processed by someone using processing Voodoo I don't possess.

Sometimes when I've been disappointed with kit I've Googled my way to pictures taken with the same kit and quickly realised that the problem isn't the kit, it's me. And conversely I've seen an awful lot of over or under exposed over saturated boring subject meh being cooed over on line (I'm looking at you, Leica owners! and others too...) but that's another issue.

There was a guy who did a comparison between an iPhone and a DSLR...

https://fstoppers.com/originals/we-compared-iphone-7-plus-camera-nikon-dslr-149423

I haven't seen anything from any camera phone that stands up to close scrutiny and of course we don't have to look at pictures like that but we do otherwise we'd all be using iphones. For example I found a print I'd done a few years ago and forgotten about. It was taken with a Medion compact which is the second worst camera I've ever owned, the worst being a keychain camera from years ago when such things were utter rubbish, anyway, I'd cropped it and printed it so that it filled an A4 sheet and it looks lovely but look at it under a magnifying glass and it suffers and look at it at 100% on screen and it's crap. Push things a bit more by shooting in low light, boosting the exposure post capture or printing or viewing big and the differences in kit and file quality tend to show more.

This might not matter. But it might. If it matters there are only a few cameras that can match or better the quality I can get from my A7 and most of them are bigger and heavier. So, with an A7 I can take a picture of my GF and family and know that I couldn't do significantly better with any other kit of the same never mind less bulk and weight and that matters to me as there may be a time when I'll wish that I had better pictures and indeed it's happened. Other factors for me are enjoying taking and processing pictures that are less important like day out walking with my camera shots and being able to use old manual lenses at their original field of view. These are less important but I like doing them as it's a hobby. For all of these reasons the A7 series is at the moment unmatched for me as nothing else does all of these things. MFT is faster but doesn't give me the drool over file quality, Fuji is old timey camera porn but wont give me the file quality and gives me no saving in bulk, the A6xxx series are compact but again being APS-C wont match the A7's file quality and the Leica interchangeable lens cameras are more than I'm willing to pay and of none of these other than the Leica allow me to use manual lenses at their original FoV.

FF files are just better than those you get from smaller formats if you want to go looking for the differences and that was something I thought about before buying into the A7. I realise that MF would be better again but with that comes bulk and more expense than I see as defendable to myself so in my world a FF DSLR is the best blend of quality and portability and there aren't too many CSC FF cameras.

Other people have other priorities rather than file quality and compactness such as taking pictures of fast moving objects and I'd guess that the A7's aren't the best for that but luckily I don't care :D We all have to set our own priorities and for me they're quality and being able to use manual lenses in a small form factor so I'm stuck with Sony but as I'm pretty brand agnostic I could have been stuck with Nikon or Fuji if they'd got there first but they didn't Sony did :D

PS.
Hope you like the thread title. I change it back later but thought it would be a giggle for now :D

:agree: Each person has a different set of priorities and preferences re saturation just look at 500px
