The Amazing Sony A1/A7/A9/APS-C & Anything else welcome Mega Thread!

Ever consider the Samyang 50 1.4? Looks like great value. Has af too.

I haven't looked at this but I assume it's bigger than the Sony 55mm f1.8. I'll have a look out of interest but as I have the 55mm and might add the 50mm macro and also have a bag full of manual 50mm's I can't see me getting a Samyang. It would only make sense if the difference between f1.4 and f1.8 was significant for me and I don't think that it is.

That's Chromatic Aberration and is caused by the lens rather than body. There's a simple slider in Lightroom to correct the majority of it (Lens Correction near the bottom of the Develop settings). It's a result of high contrast in the scene on the edge of the branches.

Which slider in that section pls when home will look

So it could be my cheap kit lens. So if I get a better lens it be better

Most lenses will do it if you look close enough. Two choices, reduce the amount of high contrast edges by not shooting branches with the sky behind or use the slider to remove it then don't zoom in 100% ;0)

Very very nice shots.
May I ask did you use a tripod and are you an architect? (It's the style and the way they remind me of photos from a book I have)

Both were hand held. f/1.2 and using high ISOs on the A7 lets me get away with that kind of thing - I couldn't have imagined it a few years ago [emoji846]

I got sidetracked into IT, but I have a degree in Architecture

I've had a look at the Flickr version of the first shot and it looks pretty good on my Mac. Soft in the corners but that's the lens.
Cheers Pal,

Yes i notice it give soft edge which does annoy me but glad you said it the lens.. Dont tell me a i need a new walk about lens.. or it be the XT2 pmsl

To be fair it does a job as a walkabout lens.
But if it really bothers you perhaps move it on and put the money toward the 16-35 f4

It a lovely light walk about yes..

TBH the 16-35 is a lens I would buy if I stick with Sony along with a 90mm macro too

I want a macro too but think I'll go with something like a sigma or tamron and save a few hundred quid

adapted. have the metabones and those macros go for a couple of hundred quid used and are excellent quality

Whats XT2 PMS please?

You may recall earlier on when you started looking at Sony i mentioned that the kit lens while good was not going to be as good as the 16-35mm.

Hi Sony users. I've never used a Sony in my life so I'm asking this on behalf of my friend who has just bought an a99 mark ii. She is unable to convert her raw files! Lightroom doesn't recognise them and my suggestion to use adobe DNG converter appears not to work either. Can anyone offer any suggestions she can try please?

Possibly as the camera has only just been released adobe hasn't released the LR profiles for the camera yet.
Worth checking if there is an update for LR.

It's not yet listed in Adobe's supported cameras list, only the Mk 1

I'd expect a compatible update to be in the works, though

Didn't the camera come with some software either in the box or which could be downloaded?

I'd be amazed if there's no manufacturers supplied software, it may be horrible but I'd be amazed if it's non existent.

Could also try Rawtherapee. It's free. When I got my A7 that opened the raws when nothing else apart from the Sony stuff would.

Sony supply a version of Capture One with the A7. I'd have guessed it would be the same with the A99/2

Well, there you go then. The answer is for her to grit her teeth and use it until the other stuff gets updated, which I'd guess wont be long.

Yes there was some capture one software with the camera but she says it doesn't recognise the files. Having not been there to see what she's been up to myself I can't say for sure what the situation is.

Not a chance :D

I just have too many cameras and not enough time to use them. I haven't used my A7 is about a month but I'm keeping it for when I do get time to myself, for holidays and for the stuff that matters the most to me. I would ideally like to sell my G1, G7 and GX7 and get a GX80 although that camera isn't ideal as it has what is IMO a poor EVF. Maybe they'll bring out a GX90 with a better EVF at some point. Anyway, as there's been no interest in my stuff it looks like I'll be keeping it.

As I've said more than once. Fuji is for me stuck in the middle not offering the image quality of my A7 whilst not leaving MFT far enough behind and as the Fuji's are about the same size as my A7 they can't offer any savings in bulk over MFT. So, for me my A7 and a MFT camera are best. A7 for luxury and old lenses and for quality when it matters and MFT for a compact unobtrusive camera and speed of operation. I can see Fuji making sense for people who think that APS-C is the sweet spot but as I like the 35 to 50mm FoV I just can't see any advantage in the Fuji's over my A7. I do like the retro styling and manual dials of the Fuji's but in use I think that the more ordinary and rather boring front and back dials are actually better as I can use them to change settings with my eye to the VF and without altering my grip and I don't think that's the case with top plate dials. So all in all I can see the appeal of the Fuji's but after giving it a lot of thought they're just not for me.

The fujis have front and rear dials like your a7 does.

To be fair most mirrorless bodies struggle in low-light so don't expect the XT-2 to be too different. It's about managing expectations.
The FE 70-200mm f4 is a cracking lens but the AF on the older A7 bodies doesn't in low-light can cause problems regards of the lens.
At present the best sensor imo is the one in the A7R II / A99 II.
