Here's a shameless plug for votes but also it adds a photo to all the discussions on the A7 series.
Taken using a Sony A7 and 16-35mm lens it shows the Inaccessible Pinnacle high on Skye's Cuillin Ridge. It has been shortlisted as a finalist in Trail Magazine's UK Mountain Photo of the Year Competition.

Inaccessible Pinnacle by Adrian TrendallView attachment 76671

It was a bit of an effort to get the photo since I needed to be by the summit for sunrise so needed to ascend the 3000 odd feet from Glen Brittle in the dark using ice axe and crampons, my way lit by head torch. After multiple early starts over a few days, things eventually came together with partial clouds, an interesting sky and beautiful light and views in the distance to Bla Bheinn. The earlier attempts had been thwarted by total cloud cover, snow, massive winds and spindrift to say nothing of the bitter cold. Knowing I had got something special I continued traversing along the ridge to Sgurr na Banachdich where my solitude was interrupted by a chef from Portree who added some human interest to the photos.

Absolutely loving the A7 for it's small size (smaller than it's successors), ease of use with view finder and monitor showing what you see is what you get. As for lenses... I now only take two lenses into the hills, Batis 25mm and Batis 85mm probably my favourite two lenses of all time. Would love to get the 18mm then I'd be really happy.
Okay start with Envy how I wish I was healthy and young enough to do the same trip as you, the vast majority of my trips into the mountains never included a camera in my back pack kit regret that somewhat now.

Love your shot and story well done and as you say shows nicely how compact the system can be:clap::)

I guess complaints about costs increase really comes down to disposable income, as you mention your financially comfortable many simply find it hard balancing having a hobby while still funding necessities

My hifi kit was largely bought used though new was probably £35-40k I would not do that again against today's financial climate

My car £2k some would say an in balance :)

I have short arms and deep pockets. My GF though is just plain stingy and makes me look like a sailor on leave.

I still have my Linn LP12. I think I got it when I was 21, it's had a few different cartridges though and the latest change was to go from moving coil to a cheaper magnet. Seems ok though :D Actually I haven't done too badly on cars as sports cars tend to hold their value better than some, had I been into large saloons I'd have lost much more.

My thing was sports motorcycles and I only lost money on my final bike that was after a mini stroke and a decision not to ride anymore the loss was because the bike was only a few weeks old

I looked at the Linn LP12 though it was a little traditional for me I am still on MC cartridge though may switch in the future

As a kid I sat behind the bus driver and watched, I got my first car before I passed my test (which I did at the first attempt after watching the driver for all those years :D)

So you had to wean yourself off double declutching or were you simply wondering what had happened to the preselector gearbox on the car you had? [emoji846]

Thanks for the vote; much appreciated. Glad you like the shot. I'm certainly healthy but not very young (53) and I know what you mean about regretting taking a camera into the mountains. I wish I'd taken up photography earlier and have to rely on memory of my earliest trips to Wales, Scotland, the Alps etc

I remember my first driving instructor looking puzzled when I turned to him and said "Fares please."

Just on the getting about thing.

One of the experiences of my life was a fishing trip in Kazakhstan. I went to Kazakhstan three times and I loved every minute and that fishing trip is one of the stand out memories of my life but I didn't walk even 100m, probably not during the whole trip :D as it was a long drive there and back and once there we were on a tiny island in the middle of the river so getting about and physical fitness to do so were never issues. I'd love to do that trip again but be able to stop and take pictures. There must be many trips and photography opportunities open to people who can't do the likes of hiking up into the mountains. If we'd been able to stop on that fishing trip I'm sure I'd have taken a lot of pictures without having to go 10m from the car.

Hope you can still get a lot of enjoyment from photography.

Hi

I'm after a uwa lens for my a7.

There doesn't seem to be any decently priced legacy lenses around (sub £130 budget) so was thinking of getting the Sony 16mm 2.8 or sigma 19mm 2.8 art and remove the baffles. I have seen it done on the net and with some light cropping works out well.
Has anyone on here done this?

Any thoughts.

I am still on the fence, in my mind I can't seem to justify having so much ££££ stuck in gear I hardly use, mainly due change of priorities but also down to the cost, weight and bulk.
Most of my time is now spent with family including my little boy (15 months), so I am rarely getting time for myself / hobbies etc. We had a trip up to Scotland recently I didn't bother taking the Sony gear, just too big and expensive..... the A7RII, Grip and 24-70mm is a whopping £5249 hanging around my next....... ouch!

Still considering the Fuji route...... a Fuji XT-2, Grip and 16-55mm to start with and see how I get on.
If I am still finding little time to use it, then at least I have a camera system with less £££ in it as a opposed to having a full-blown Sony setup worth 50-60% more than the Fuji, plus I will still have a camera for when I do need it.

I need to get a hold of my pixel-peeping and GAS now, its been long over due...... :(
I was just thinking, if you could find time why not try involve or take your son on a 365 day photo shoot 1 per day including many of your son growing might give you a focus as well as bonding with your son.

You could consider the A72 instead or A7R2 lots of your gear crosses should still do weddings if you feel the need and sell many of the excess lens

Just guessing but your £5k camera probably does not look out of place in your car and most onlookers will have no idea of the value of your camera.

Son

On the beech
In the woods
Fun parks
Arboretum
Etc

At a pinch maybe go for the A6300 or the Fuji if you feel the need just enjoy taking shots with your family plus print some of them

Just a thought that might fit with family and hobby :)

ordered the godox flash and trigger, may have to call upon owners to help with syncing the two!
Mine synced with no issues, just make sure you have the trigger group and channel set to the and off you go, high speed sync seems to work pretty flawlessly

Cool, thanks. No doubt I'll shout on here if I can't set it up.

I have just purchased a Sigma 150-600 Contemporary lens and I thought some of you may be interested in how it performs on a Sony A7R2. All those web reports about it being a bit soft at the longer end are not true- once adjusted using the USB Sigma dock it's so sharp I could shave with it !

That's it I have been looking for an excuse to change from Gillette blades;)

Look forward that you may share some images from the long end :)

I see congratulations are in order on your Fuji deal, have you decided that Sony is out or are you doing a comparison and then decide (yep nosey :ty:)

Yes, I am going to see how I get on with the Fuji XT-2 and compare it with the Sony first before making a choice..... however my gut instinct says the Sony system might be going :D

I use the Samyang 14mm f2.8 in Sony E mount, mainly for astro stuff. Works well for me. Easily in your budget.

Legacy lenses wider than 24mm tend to be rare or expensive or both. As fstorm above maybe a modern manual lens could actually be a cheaper option than a legacy lens?

Another option which may not be as attractive is that there's a 19-35mm AF SLR lens that was badged by lots of people (Cosina, Tamron, Vivitar) and has quite a following and there's the Canon 20-35mm f3.5-5.6 USM, I had one and it was ok, compact and light too. These lenses can both be found for well under £100 (maybe nearer to £60?) but give the problem of how to mount them as you may have to go for an adapter which will boost the price back up.

I'll be interested to hear which way you go and what results you get.

Personally I got a wider lens for my MFT kit, it probably worked out cheaper.

Thought this might be a good project for someone make a good large home :D

Good shot there Allan. Everything nice and straight and a good composition too. I like it :D What lens did you use?

I don't have one of those :(

At one time my most used lens was a Sigma 12-24mm but these days I'm much more 35-50mm although I do have a 9-18mm for MFT.

Anyone shooting the fireworks this evening? Year on year I tell myself I'll take the camera out to a display, but never do.
