The Amazing Sony A1/A7/A9/APS-C & Anything else welcome Mega Thread!

Got to say the top shop for my taste is stunning if getting an FD lens would let me do black and white like that I would buy one sadly my efforts in b&w just don't blow me away

I was very glad I had f/2.0 and no mirror slap for that shot: wide open with -2.3 EC at ISO 800 and it was still 1/25 sec

Slightly off topic but about the competition and CSC's in general... It'll be interesting to see if the rumored new Canon mirrorless camera improves on the rather disappointing performance of the previous model(s) and offers any competition to the Sony A6xxx and even the A7 series.

One thing which I struggle to understand and feel disappointed with is the brand loyalty and fanboyism that seems evident on forums. It seems that some think that a serious entry into the mirrorless market by Canon or Nikon is needed to legitimise mirrorless and once released is expected to instantly dominate the market. Until that happens CSC's are point and shoot alternatives for girls.

I occasionally did/do some work for Asian and Japanese companies and they can be a little insular. They may be reluctant to buy in expertise, technology and processes or to seriously look at and learn from what the competition are doing and I think it's far from certain that either Canon or Nikon can enter the market with a competitive product as the tech and expertise is out there to be bought but if they'll buy it in is another matter and an in house job may be... underwhelming and a generation or two behind the cutting edge. Time will tell.

I'd be very surprised if Nikon & Canon release a mirrorless system to rival anything Sony, Fuji etc have as it'll take sales away from their own ranges, this in itself is the problem.... I'd say they should drop the old DSLR technology altogether, for example keep the DLSR body ranges but covert them mirrorless whilst retaining performance etc.

I had a Canon M3 before getting my Sony's. It wasn't a bad camera at all, but was let down by it's native lens selection.

Today I've seen the images and specs for their new M5 and they look good tbh. EVF, 80d sensor, dual pixel AF, even IBIS amazingly. Still the same limited choice of lenses though.

Sure, you can put an adaptor on and use EF lenses, but I think it would have sold a lot more if was slightly bigger and naively fitted EF lenses.

I used to think that APS-C was the Goldilocks format and sometimes I maybe still do... but at other times I think that APS-C is stuck in the middle not matching the quality of the FF A7 kit whilst not offering the savings in bulk and weight offered by MFT and not leaving MFT far enough behind in image quality.

As I've said many times, I've lusted after the Fuji's but if going for an APS-C system I think I'd jump for the Sony A6xxx as it's still a compact system when the body is paired with the sort of lenses I'd use. Unless the Canon is very compact I think that for me like the Fuji it'll be a piggy in the middle losing out to FF and MFT but I do think that if it's even half decent it'll sell very well to those either invested in Canon lenses or in love with the Canon badge. That's a state of affairs I just don't get :D

what is it about full frame that you like so much that you don't think you can get with apsc?

I think both the Fuji APS-C and Sony FF have their own advantages and disadvantages.
Size wise the Fuji is obviously going to be smaller setup but I stuck with larger Sony setup because I believe the size & weight penalties are worth it for the IQ you get.
Below is a example of the zoom's, to my eyes the Sony isn't that much bigger considering its a FF f2.8 lump of glass.

If you've had both you should be able to decide for yourself.

For me, looking at the files I have or have downloaded if I look at a whole image quite often even the slightly smaller formats such as MFT or even some compact shots can look very nice indeed and looking at whole images I often forget what gear I used but if looking more closely and I admit that I can't stop myself from doing this the slightly large formats usually if not 100% of the time win.

As I keep saying I do see the appeal of the Fuji's and we'll have to wait and see what the Canon is like but nothing I've downloaded has made me think APS-C is the system for me or could ever make me wish I'd gone for it rather than my A7. YMMV.

With the lenses I'm most likely to use there doesn't seem to be any significant difference in bulk between the A7 and Fiji mini SLR designs. Less so than in your zoom example. Slight differences in the shape of the grip which may make one or the other mini SLR design look bulkier are to me irrelevant the second you put a lens on the camera as none of these grips protrude further than the lens. So, as a way to save bulk and weight to me the Fuji is piggy in the middle. I did used to think that APS-C was perhaps the Goldilocks size but since the A7 came along with such nice 35mm f2.8 and 50mm-ish lenses which I'm more likely to use than anything else I've changed my mind. MFT gives me an even smaller package and to be honest sports car like performance as opposed to my adequate if slightly leisurely A7 :D

This might be interesting... Samyang have announced a new 14mm f/2.4, available in full-frame E-mount

http://www.photographyblog.com/news/samyang_85mm_f1.2_and_14mm_f2.4/

Manual focus, but electronic aperture control.

With that design aesthetic and the statement that they're designed for 50 Mpx sensors suggest they are gunning for Zeiss' market with these.

Pricing TBC.

[there's also an 85mm f/1.2 that will only be available in Canon EF mount, for now)

What compact Shoulder bag are people using with there camera please with like the kit lens and a 55mm to go in it..

Cheers

I use a ThinkTank Mirrorless Mover 10 for my A6000 and two little Sigma primes.

Last weekend I went to my Bro's wedding. This little case fitted my A7ii with 55mm attached, so fine for one lens. Have a look here for the larger versions:

Canon and Nikon will have no choice but to make a serious tilt at at least the entry/mid level of the CSC market as it looks like people are flocking to those rather than the traditional Canon/Nikon entry level DSLR's so in an effort to retain market share they need to do something.
Realistically while I think Fuji, Sony and initially Olympus/Panasonic have done great things for mirrorless they will never be fully accepted by some people until they can pickup a fully featured Canon or Nikon one!

Yup. So sad but so true. Unless of course Nikon go pop or Canon keep on churning out doggy doo and people eventually realise.

Personally being a tight @rse I'd pick up my camera and kit lens and go to Currys and pick up a cheapo bag that'd hold it with enough room for the prime.

I have a Lowepro Apex 100AW which takes my A7 + 35mm and an old Town and Country camcorder bag (maybe 20 years old) which takes my A7+lens + two more primes plus filter holder and filters and a spare battery. There's one on evil bay for £10.

I use a Think Tank Retrospective 5! Perfect size & weight, with good support. I can carry my A7, 55, 35, 16-35 in there with ease.

Thank guys. Might get that think tank 5 as I've the 10 which does hold everything nicely include the 70-200. I had this bag when I had the d750.

Been looking at some of the manfrotto which are coming in at £20ish

Nooooo!!! No one needs looooong lenses! What we want is more 50mm's... and a compact 35mm f1.8!
:D

SHHHHH!!!! Whisper this... I may have some time to myself tomorrow and if the weather and light is anything like I think I go up the hills :D

I suppose it'll be better than a wider aperture mass market legacy lens stopped down to match the Loxia's widest aperture.

I'm not interested in these lenses to the point of buying them but they'll make a nice compact set for anyone wanting modern good performing compact manual lenses.

I call that fate

When I got up this morning I couldn't even see the hills. In their place and in the place of the sky was an endless grey nothingness. There was no point going out, at all.

I stayed home, did the washing and made a Yorkshire pudding dinner. The roasties were particularly lovely.

Well look on the bright (or should that be grey side) Alan,
  • you could have acquired a new Grey Card
  • you made a stonking dinner and indeed clearly thoroughly enjoyed it.
And the next time you manage to get some YOU time you'll get out there and smash it!

As we're running up to winter now I'll hope for a nice crisp and snow covered winters day, failing that we might go to Thailand before Xmas.

There's just no point going out and about my local area when the weather and light is so poor as I have endless pictures taken on flat light no sky days.

Photokina begins next week, hoping the new Sony A9 is unveiled along with the 16-35mm f2.8 GM. :)
The Fuji XT-2 has really gone down well with its DSLR like AF system and high speed responsiveness.
Let's hope Sony can crack it with the A9 as the A7RII was a step in the right direction. :)

If you go to Thailand you might miss the snow think how upset that will make you, better stay in the U.K. :naughty:

Been looking forward to today for a few months, off the Exmoor and Dartmoor for a week in the campervan :)

Nothing to do but get out with the camera for a whole week. Bliss. Figured the weather will be iffy, so bought a Lee mist filter for when the sky is meh. Hope it works well.

Between the two of us (Missus is also into photography), I think half the van is full of photography gear :D

Just got back from a week staying in Porthcurno. Packed the drone, xt2, x70, a7rii, 85 Batis, 35 Zeiss, and 4 fuji lenses, couple of tripods, flash, battery grip, Chargers etc etc. Bit overkill for a family holiday.
