Haven't formed an opinion yet on the optical qualities.
Construction seems fine.

I've taken the camera on a quick whiz around the block at lunch time, but the mojo wasn't flowing. Got some boring shots.

Been using the old Leica 50mm f2, that is nice in the centre and gets fuzzy towards the edges, but it sure does bring the subject to life.

Sony is announcing 6 more new FE lenses this year. Any guesses/wants & predictions?

Could do with an
UWA 15mm f2.8/f3.5 that isn't overly big
100mm f2.5 like the Nikon one. May be a DC version.


Got the 28mm SZ lens with me today. Overcast today, so more PP and B&W probably.
 
On the subject of wants, I'd like an A7 and lenses with weather sealing and one that works well with legacy UWA Lecia/Zeiss/Voigtlander RF glass. Something to do with the sensor glass acting as a filter where the rear lens element is close to the sensor. The fancy multiple focussing point of the A6300 would be welcome too.

Maybe they could look at updating the 35mm f1.4? It may be an excellent lens and reports of issues may be by far in the minority but folk are very vocal about any problems on line and in the eyes of some this lens and maybe one or two others may damage the perception of the system.

If Sony could reduce the internet panic over this and other lenses we could get back to complaining about the old favourites like the lenses being too big, the bodies being too expensive and too big or too small depending on your view and the battery capacity being too feeble :D

Other than those, maybe a wider than 28mm and a longer than 85mm lens to complete a "classic" prime Sony line up, and of course a compact 35mm f1.8 :D

I think we should start up a campaign to get you a tiny 35mm 1.8 developed.

If they do a 135mm I wouldn't want it at f4.
F2.8 or f2 would do the trick.

But personally I think I'm covered for everything lens wise over the two two systems I own. Only really missing a macro lens - but the 35 1.4 does focus nice and close.

12-24mm GM makes sense. Or 14.
135mm needs to be faster than f2.8, I'm not sure too many would be interested in an f4. A 135mm f2 is really the only other lens I want right now, and I'd rather get the 70-200 f2.8 than an f4 prime.
The 300mm f2.8 makes sense, they need something on the long end. Maybe even a 400/4
A budget 50mm f2 would be better just to differentiate it from the 55mm a bit more.
I really don't understand the demand for yet another 35mm lens though. We have the f2/8 compact, f1.4 fast, f2 manual, and a ton of zooms covering it too.

I think there's room for something like a 24-105/120mm f4 as a general purpose lens. Then the 24-70mm f4 could quietly die.
Maybe a budget long zoom like a 70-300mm, just to match up with the 28-70mm.
Sony should also consider hitting some of the speciality lenses, and doing things that can't be done in DSLR land. Like an autofocus tilt-shift lens.

I've sold enough of my Canon gear to make the leap... But now I'm wavering.

Option 1:
A7 II + 28-70 f/3.5-5.6 + either Loxia 35mm/55mm/Batis 85mm

Option 2:
A7RII + 28-70 f/3.5-5.6

So... A7II with 2 lenses, or A7RII with one lens, and then twiddle thumbs (for a LONG time) until can afford an extra £800... The price difference for me between the two is at most £100...

Putting the cheapest, average performing kit lens on the most expensive, highest performing body seems a complete waste of time and money.

I'd go with option 1..

Or option 2 but forget the kit lens and look for a used 55 1.8.
 
Yeah... I'm just nervous about just getting a single prime... I didn't think the kit lens was that bad?
 
I'd go for Option 2 if possible but as mentioned forget the standard zoom lens, try and get 55mm f1.8.
Plenty of cropping ability with the A7RII with the 55mm f1.8 :)

I don't think it's bad - but I think it's not very special.
Imo if you are getting an exceptional body like an a7rii you want to get the best out of it by using the best glass where possible.

Using the 55 on either body will be excellent. Same with the Batis.

If you are on a budget which means by getting the a7ii you'll be able to get a lens of top quality - then that seems the better option. I think the images on the a7ii with a top lens will be better than the kit lens on the a7rii.

Depends on what you intend to do with it.

As the other guys said, the 28-70mm isn't bad, it's just pointless to put it on an A7RII. You'd get better image quality from the A7II and the 55mm than the A7RII and the kit lens.

If the budget is that tight, how about going to the used or import market for lens, camera, or both? Maybe then for the same price you could get the A7RII, 55mm, and the great value 28mm if you;re worried about just owning a single prime lens. Otherwise if those are really your only 2 options, go the A7II route.
 
Both option 1 (with the Loxia 35mm) and 2 come in at £1875 new via my friend at Sony, new with warranties so cheaper than grey, and "better" than second-hand.

Shooting "travel" (landscapes/city/street), climbing, and family stuff. Mostly.
 
I've just procured an A7ii (from Rizvan) and two weeks later, I have a 2nd user SZ 55mm, 35mm and 28mm.
Before I bought the native lenses, I was using my old Nikon primes and a couple of RF lenses, Leica and Voigtlander.

I'd go for quality glass every single time. Good glass retains it's value, bodies depreciate, especially Sony ones.

Having said that, if you have a good collection of RF glass, go for the A7rii, as it works better with RF type lenses, which I didn't know before I bought the A7ii.

Harrison's Camera have 4x Sony FE 24-70 f4 lenses @ £675 and 1 28-70mm kit lens @ £150 in their secondhand section, come with 12 months warranty.
I guess the f4 lenses are customers trading to the new f2.8 versions.
I'm undecided if I want to keep my 24-70 f4 or not :)

£675 seems nuts for a 24-70 f4 the last few on here have gone for closer to £440-£450
 
I don't think the 28-70mm is a bad lens at all in fact I'd say it's the best standard zoom I've ever had and certainly much better than the Nikon and Canon ones I had.

I'd start by thinking about what I wanted to use the gear for. It's a basic point I know but thinking about what you want to photograph, how you are going to get the shot and how you are going to view it should help you decide what gear you need.

I hardly print these days and even when I did 8mp was enough for an A3 print. Actually these days most of my pictures are shared electronically 2000 pixels wide or less and even my Panasonic G1 is good enough for 100% crops at that size at low to mid ISO's so the A7 and 24mp is just icing on the cake :D

I've been thinking lately that I should use zooms more and that maybe a 28-70mm f3.5-5.6 and a fast prime is really all I should need :D We're all different but thinking about your needs should help you decide what hardware you need to spend your hard earned on.

Guess it's because they come with warranty.
I agree for the money it's a over priced lens vs it's actual performance.
 
OK... A7RII with the 35mm f/2.8.
Considered the 50mm f/1.8 but think it'll be a bit to long for general walkabout use.
If I can flog my cymbals which I haven't used for er... 6 years, I'll get a general purpose zoom, probably the kit lens as it's only £246 or maybe the f/4.

The A7RII is a wicked camera, good choice and the 35mm f2.8 isn't bad either.
If you do decide to go for the 24-7mm f4 don't buy new RRP as its over-priced vs its performance, buy second hand or import.
I have the 24-70mm f4 and it's not a bad lens, just not worth the £749 I paid for it :(

Mate the mirrorless system ain't any smaller then a dslr with quality fast lenses though.

If you don't need fast lenses then that's when the downsizing will benefit
 
Yeah I can get the 24-70 f/4 new for about £635 new. What I can see myself doing is using the 35mm for "serious" shots, then getting the 28-70 as a quick n' dirty lens, drop the MP and use as a walkabout.
