The Amazing Sony A1/A7/A9/APS-C & Anything else welcome Mega Thread!

Right, I've started the sell-off of my Canon gear, so soon to be joining the Sony club

Now just need to decide on lenses. Scope in the budget for these 3 options:
1) Sony 28-70mm & Sony35mm f/2.8
2) Sony 24-70mm f/4
3) Zeiss Loxia 35mm f/2

I tend to shoot portraits (family & friends), "travel" (Landscapes & city stuff), or rock climbing. I downsized for portability mostly, along with "baby stuff" taking up all ruck-sack space, just don't have the time to dedicate to more specialised photography (macro for example). No plans for pro-use, just a keen amateur.

The other option COULD be, to not get the A7RII, just the A7II and free up more cash for an extra/better lens, but I think I'm set on the A7RII...

**Edit** Forgot to mention, I like the appeal of the Loxia as was looking at the x100t for a more hands-on camera, but equally not sure about only having one prime for all the things I shoot.

No. What A7 do you have, in terms of speed, the A7 will be a slug, the A7ii and A7rii from what Ive seen perform alright in good light.
I used the A7 for a Airshow, performed really well with very little issues if at all, It depends on your requirements.
Based on the results from the Airshow, the A7 and the FE70-200mm f4 was no slug ;)

I've been doing a bit of research and think I've decide to go for a Canon 16-35 f4 IS.

Now, a 70-200. Does anyone use the Canon f4 or a Sony? Obviously it won't be as good as the f2.8 IS II, but I only want it for landscapes and as long as the IQ is good that's all that really matters to me. It is very cheap, has anyone tried this lens?
The Sony 70-200mm f4 is a smashing lens with fast AF, will be better than a 3rd party if you need quick AF and small lightweight package.

Errr, perhaps go back and read again. Then comment.

I have the A7ii, but to be honest for what I want a 70-200 for I'm more likely to be on a tripod and using manual focus anyway.

This is very good. Looking on eBay to get an idea of second-hand prices it looks like I can get a Canon 16-35 f4 IS and a Canon 70-200 f4 (non IS) for about the same price as a second-hand Sony 16-35 f4 :). Plus the Missus can use them on her DSLR.

Now, any recommendations for a Canon mount macro? I was thinking the Sigma 105mm but open to opinions? Happy with a fully manual lens here.

Cheers Riz, but I only need this for landscapes so not worried about the focus speed at all.

TBH I was going to go for the Sony 70-200 f4 and the 16-35 f4. It was Sony that put me off with the pricing on the new GM lenses which seem steep to say the least. This got me wondering why Sony think normal punters will pay so much more than competitors prices for lenses? I mean if your a pro using an A7rII/Sii and these new lenses really are much better than equivalent Canon and Nikon then fair enough. But for normal enthusiasts with say an A7/A7r, or an A7ii like me, the prices of some Sony lenses is getting ridiculous IMO. I can't justify spending literally twice what Canon L glass would be on the equivalent Sony's unless there is a serious advantage to me.

Unless I'm missing something?

I think the Sony A7 bodies are all good value. Lenses seem great but overpriced IMO.

Note that the 28-70mm isn't constant f4, it's f3.5-5.6. Nice enough lens though, IMO. I also have the 35mm f2.8 and I think it's almost perfect... it would be perfect if it was f1.8 and had end stops and markings :D

Good spot, was aware of this but yeah - quite a difference.
I can get the 28-70 for £146 new, so it's almost a no-brainer, but sadly my Sony contact's discount doesn't extend to Zeiss lenses so can't get a good price on the Loxia (Sony-Zeiss is fine...)

From reviews, the 28-70mm is "Good" unless you pixel-peep or shoot RAW (so distortion isn't corrected).

Fair play just saw the a6300 focus in with the canon lenses on a video on YouTube rapid to say the list might sell the a72 and get that tbh
Or wait for A7 generation III ;)

I don't have a crop body mmmmm ;) lol A6300 is £999!!!

Yeah I'm out of touch lol if I get one I will sell one to fund it but wait a bit.... They looked really impressive from what I saw but it was ment to look impressive if you get me lol

I think I've seen that video... bright beach weather etc. Great test... not.

That's the one ;-) I'm sure it's different in darkest Bristol with it hammering down lmao

Yup. Poor light is always the real test. I have the a6k and it's great but like all mirrorless it's literally night and day when the light's go out. Still.. a real bargain.

Really!!!! Might have to go to the local cam shop with Metabones and some canon glass :-)

Cool...... It will take my 55 and 35 zeiss but obv crop them?

There are two very good cheap lenses though... 50 1.8oss and 35 1.8oss. Under 400 for both used. Will work on your a7rii in crop mode also.

Defo go and have a look when I get some time next week .... I saw Gary gong use one a year ago lol

Needs a higher shutter speed really, your leg isn't sharp in the 2nd one ;)

Not a user of studio lighting myself, but max sync should be higher than 1/100 surely?

Tbh yep your right m8 was trying to help Jonny lol
